...with IBS as our systems over-react to all stimuli. Do a search for more posts on this.

You'll get there!

how do you know that cleanses are dangerous? personal experience? I can't find anything on the web that says they are dangerous for people w/ IBS- it only says its supposed to help.

Yea, stay away from OJ on an empty tummy!! That hurts just thinking about it, too!!!

I have only been on this Nexium for 3 weeks, so I'm sure it will take awhile, but it's getting better. Little by Little.....Doesn't it suck having all this on top of IBS??? And you have Fibro, too???

I'm sorry, hon!! I feel bad for you!! But, you're tough! I can tell that you don't let any of it drag you down! Go Girl!

*HUGS*!!

With cleanses, you should go slower at first to see how your system reacts. Whenever anyone does any kind of cleanse, the body will experience what is called a Herxheimer Reaction, and this is actually good for your body although you won't think so at the time. Here's a link that better explains it. Please read all the way to the bottom because it says what to do incase it feels like it's too much to take.

Michelle--I'm still at the stage where even garlic or onion powder really triggers reflux. The smell of onion/garlic cooking gives me rude heartburn.

I lucked out--my M.D. passed me 7 packages of Nexium samples, today (i.e. 7 X 14 doses/package).

Kate.

No, I've never taken a cleanses b/c my GI doc (the best in this country) AND Heather are against them. It has been scientifically recorded that part of what causes the IBS symtoms is that if you give our guts any stimuli they totally over-react (an allergic reaction is a good analogy to this) and that's why we get D, C, pain, etc from stimuli that would be fine on a non-IBSer.

And I am NOT talking about a Herxheimer reaction here. You run the risk of making your IBS permanently worse with a cleanses b/c your body could take it as another insult to the gut (like the kind of thing that can trigger off IBS in the first place). I would NEVER take that risk, it is not worth it.

Alot of so-called cures and remedies for IBS have absolutely no scientific backing or studies done. Alot of people with IBS are also mis-diagnosed (which is why you sometimes get people who swear by stimulant laxatives for example - they would likely have chronic constipation not IBS).

Oh yeah, it takes ages. I think I was on lansoprazole (prilosec???) for 2 months before I saw a real difference, but once I did it wasn't all that long before it was controlling my symptoms. And after a while I gave off it no problem.
