Perhaps omitting the oatmeal and trying more gentle grains might ease your cramping? Rice is nice. Maybe potatoes?
If you are consistently getting cramps, try another cereal.

Kate, IBS-D.

The IF in the oatmeal (since it is a wholegrain) might be too much for you right now. I would recommend a hot rice cereal or a dry cereal like Crispix. Are you drinking herbal tea? Peppermint tea before a meal or chamomile after a meal works really well on cramps.

I'm a "D" who has gotten pretty stable and maintained stability for quite a long time now.

I know how you feel about the big salad and raw fruit and whole grains. Oh yeah. I came from California. So it was very difficult for me to go onto this program. But I did it because I was desperate for relief from the pain. That was all I wanted, even more than a big red juicy apple. I stuck with the program RELIGIOUSLY for a very long time. And I got better.

Now I have discovered I can tolerate coffee again -- YAAAY -- and even dead cow carcass! Can you believe it? Dark turkey meat goes down just fine, and I always eat whole wheat breads. Yes, I have a nice big salad every night for dinner, and for dessert I have a nice, big juicy apple or a big orange, pineapple, whatever I want. (Okay, so I may never have broccoli or cabbage again, and probably not any dairy either, but that's do-able.)

So stick with it -- you WILL get better. The day WILL come when you will have a green salad again. Just don't push it. Try to focus on that phenomenal sourdough bread -- oooooh baby! -- and home-made vegetable soup. I LOVE home-made soups! Try a cream of potato soup (but use soy milk!), and maybe some Beer Bread. I have a fabulous recipe for Beer Bread (it's in the Recipe Board), and it goes great with home made lentil soup.

Don't get discouraged; just reach for the goal. You'll get there.
