I have a offical diagnosis of IBS and IC, have been working on improving the lifestyle and dealing with remaining a skinny minnie...:) Tomorrow I must take a small bowel series that requires barium. I have some concerns and don't know how the barium is going to trigger the ibs. Does anyone have any history for me about their persoanl experiences? Thanks!

Hi,
I had a CT scan of the abdomen this past summer and I had to drink barium. I already was in a D mode and the barium just made it worse. They gave me a lomotil at the hospital so I could get through the test.
I don't know if that's typical or not but b/c I'm so sensitive to stuff anyway.
Good luck! Sandy

I had this done about 18 months ago. Just really push the water/liquids afterward and it shouldn't be too bad. It can trigger a major C attack if you don't. You'll be pooping white glue for a day or two, but no worries! I hope you get good results.

I was IBS-D at the time I had mine done, too, but the Barium stopped me up for 2 days. It FINALLY came out and was just as white as it went in, so don't be alarmed. It wasn't uncomfortable if that's what you're worried about. It didn't trigger a IBS attack but I had acid reflux, too, so it did give me a little bit of chest pressure. But, other than that, I was fine. Good Luck! Michelle
