I am a male in my late twenties and have suffered with what I think is IBS for about 5 years. It all started from waht I thought was a string of closterphobia triggered from a couple bad closterphobic attacks as a young man. Airplanes seem to be the worst for me. I don't fear crashing and kind of like the thrill of jet power, but thinking that I might not get to a restroom when the plane lands and all the people fill the aisles
Is this normal for IBS?

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone having IBS *just* from an anxiety-related disorder, but something like claustrophobia and episodes relating to it can definitely have an effect on IBS symptoms. The best advice I can offer is to follow the IBS diet (which calms down the physiological aspects of IBS - see the "Diet" link in the left-hand menu), and also address your claustrophobia/anxiety issues - therapy, medication, hypnosis, whatever you need to do to tackle the problem. In my experience with my own anxiety disorders, my IBS symptoms improved DRASTICALLY when I finally did something to help the anxiety.

Good luck... and welcome to the boards!

You also NEED to see a doc and get fully tested. But in the meantime, the diet should help whatever.

I'd suggest anxiety meds and/or the hypno CDs btw.

Thanks for responding!!! I did see a doc and he put me on anxiety drugs. I took them for about 3 months and all they did is make me drowsy. I still had the "gotta go now attacks". I have not fully addressed this whole IBS issue until now. All the doc did was a short interview and give me meds. Frustrating !!! I plan on jumping into the diet full on as I wean out the cabinets.

I saw in your profile you are going into gardening!!! I got my Horticulture degree from Utah State University about 7 years ago and have sadly drifted away from that line of work. I do plan to start my own bamboo nursery soon and get my hands dirty once again. Good Luck

Thanks for the advice!!!

Hi,
Stress played a part of my IBS symtpoms. My GI doc said that was part of it. I am managing so far. It's difficult to manage stress everyday. Supplements can help in most cases.

Good luck

I love Bamboo...but I have a small garden!

YOu should try the hypno...Mike Mahoney's CDs are great. And a SFS like Acacia can help the urgency too.
