How long did it take to get up to your SF maintainance dose?

As you guys know, I'm trying Acacia. I came to wonder, how long did it take most of you to finally reach your maintainance dose? Is it possible to get up to 12 or 14 grams within a month or two? I feel like I just want to cram the whole tablespoon of Acacia down my mouth.

I am impatiently waiting for some BMs. How long did it take you guys to build up to your maintainance dose? What's the worst that can happen if I increase 1/2 tsp every few days?

I'm not on acacia, of course, but back when I was taking a SFS regularly, I got up to my full dose in about a month and a half.

I just started taking it again, after almost a year of not taking it, and I'm fully expecting to be up to my full dose again in a month or less. I'm already up to 4g/day (2 tablets) with no problems, and I just started a couple days ago.

I'm not sure if that's at all helpful, but there ya go. LOL

A lot of people are afraid to try them because they're inulin, which can be a problem for people who are prone to gassiness, but I've had no problem with them at all. Just be sure to get the kind that are NOT sugar-free, if you should decide to try them!

You're so funny, Beth! I'm doing the same thing and I'm just like you. I just want to take all of it, now!! That probably wouldn't be a good idea!!

They taste like orange. I like them.....but they don't help with my diarrhea. They helped me alot when I went through the constipation phase of my IBS. But, when I switched to being IBS-D, they didn't help with the diarrhea at all. Have they helped anyone else that is IBS-D????

...and they've helped me just fine.

Jaime - they taste a lot like chewable vitamin C tablets, and the consistency isn't too bad... I find they stick in my teeth a little bit, but nothing a drink or tooth-brushing afterwards won't fix. I'd rather have a little grit in my teeth than try to drink a glass of glue! (I tried Citrucel before this - that was just plain awful.)

that sounds great. (i always loved those vitamin c chewables.) and they must work out to being cheaper than psyllium, since at my current dose, one bottle lasts about two weeks. to switch i just compare SF content, lower my dose a tiny bit in terms of that, and work my way back up?

Possibly. I always had about 3-4 uncomfortable bloated feeling days when I would increase my dose, and I was just too cautious to speed up. Since my body like Acacia, yes, I could have gone faster I suppose. However, once you go over your dose, you feel bad again, so it in not an endless climb. Going slow confirmed to me that it was acacia and nothing else so I knew to back down when I hit my stride.

Sorry to ramble. If you know it isn't causing problems, increase every two weeks.

That should work fine.

The bottles contain 90 tablets at 2g per tablet, and I pay about $11 for a bottle. You can do the math with your current fiber and dosage.

Honestly, Heather's acacia is probably the best in terms of the amount of fiber for your buck, but I like my chewables!

Honestly, I'm not sure. LOL Since I'm stable, it's not like I'm expecting to see any great difference in things anyway... I mostly decided to start taking them again because I'm decreasing the amount of food I'm eating in a day. I haven't needed a SFS because I've been eating SO MUCH in the way of SF foods every day. Now that I'm cutting back pretty drastically, I'm a little worried about destabilizing, so this is how I'm hoping to keep things good.

For now, I'm aiming for 6g/day. My high dose a year ago was 8g/day, and that's where I stabilized.

wow. for $8, one bottle of my psyllium caps has about 53g of SF. one bottle of your chewables has 180g of SF, at $11. that's ridiculous. i am definitely changing over.

i agree about the acacia - i eat so many of my meals at work that i need something portable. especially as i'm about to start a new job, i want something as simple and inconspicuous as possible. not having to down six pills first thing in the morning wouldn't hurt, either.

I also tried Fiber Ghoice but switched for 2 reasons - 1 I was still getting some bloating -- and it's listed as a possible culprit -- and 2 - I also heard that the chewables like that can be bad for your teeth - especially if you take a lot of them - and on a regular basis. That certainly describes an IBS supplement. lol Rather than take that chance -- I just switched. I do take the travel size with me for emergencies -- when I might not get any water that isn't freezing cold... stuff like that.

6 - 8 weeks sounds like a very doable timeline -- as long as the fiber is agreeing with you.

I use those, too, and they don't bother me at all. I found that Acacia bothered me a lot more, unfortunately. This is fine with me, though, because I actually enjoy the taste of the Fiber Choice. It's like I'm tricking my body into believing I'm eating candy and not a SFS.

Yep, I got to the full dose in about a month. I started slow but never really noticed any change, so by the end I was increasing it by 1/2 tsp every other day or so.

Well, I was actually taking Fiber Choice before I even found out I had IBS... so I don't remember! Back then I didn't get the bloating I get now so I probably just started taking a bunch at once. Oh to feel that way again!

Hi guys..

great info on the fiberchoice! I'm thinking about starting these.

I've been using acacia, but I am just so sick of having to stir that stuff up three times a day. I have a very busy schedule, so cutting corners anywhere makes my life alot easier. I think the fiberchoice are the only safe chewables right?

What about Benefiber? I want to increase the dosage. I am at about 1/2 tsp a day. I'm not exactly sure how to increase. I am afraid to go to quickly with it. Anyone here stabalized, and up to a full dosage with benefiber? I need some tips or something.
