More than possible. white rice - good! Avocado - good! crab (fake) - ok. crab (real) - better. seaweed - as long as you're eating more white rice than seaweed - tolerable. Just go easy on the wasabi.
Shorter answer - I now eat sushi every day.

Totally safe for me! NOW, you're making me hungry! If you're in a D-phase, though, go easy on the seaweed.

I'm jealous.

I get some about once a month at the grocery store. I usually think I'm going to eat it for lunch the next day or that I'm only going to have a few pieces when I get home, but it's always all gone by the time I go to bed that night.

Being part-Asian I suppose it is in my blood. Being a "C" I find that sushi helps me "go". I too could eat it every day.

I have had so many requests for sushi when having church potlucks and such that I am burned out a bit on rolling it. It isn't as complicated as it looks...and oh so yummy!

Bob:

It's not the fish, or if vegetarian sushi, the vegetables--it's the seaweed! Seaweed is a bowel stimulant--it's a source of IF and really stimulates mine. (That's why I'm not eating much sushi as I'm D!) I used to eat seaweed and algae by the bag, i.e. Dulse, etc., just because it's tasty. It has a kind of re-laxative effect. It's really yummy, though. It's high in iodine and silica, too, by the way, as well as minerals.

That is my dream! Kosher sushi is difficult to come by!

PLEASE tell me how you make it step by step! I thought about buying a book on the subject...is there one you recommend if you don't wish to tell me yourself?

Where in Asia does your fam originate? Have you ever been? I always knew you were special...now I know you are even more special (I dated many men from differet backrounds...and one was Asian! He gave me his sen-sai's (sp) yin yang necklace. It was very special to me! It was a wonderful teen romance.....)

My husband makes veggie and fish sushi too, when he has time. It is so-o-o-o good. Ruchie, just look in the library for a cookbook with sushi rolling pictures - it's not that complicated, but you will have to practice a few times to get the rolls looking nice. Until that point, you'll have sushi casserole rather than sushi rolls, but it tastes just as good!

Kate, Oh I didn't know that sushi was made with seaweed, I
thought it was just raw fish. I have heard that seaweed acts
like a laxative. In fact, I bought this stuff from Northern
Ireland called "Phycoplex", but I haven't tried it yet. It
has a warning on the label that says it can cause severe
cramps the first few times you use it. That didn't thrill me too much. Thanks for the explanation- Bob

I buy my seaweed at the Asian market though I have seen it in regular grocery stores. You take 1/2c rice vinegar, 4 Tbsp. sugar and 1.5 tsp salt and mix all of that together.

Make 4 cups (dry...cook according to directions) of sushi or Japanese rice (calrose) none of that Uncle Ben's stuff . Pour the "sushi-su" into the rice and mix well. Let cool.

Take your seaweed and bamboo mat if you have one (not neccessary though), take a cup of your rice and press it into the seaweed leaving about 1/2" of seaweed "empty" to seal. Press well as that will adhere the rice to the seaweed. It takes practice and your first few rolls may look a little scary but they taste good no matter how scary they look!

Roll with your favorite stuff...I love wasabi and soy sauce. Ooh..I have a couple of rolls in my fridge. I think I will eat them for lunch!

I am half Korean but we lived in Japan a hundred years ago when I was a baby until I was nine. In my heart I am a Japanese girl!

If you can't find a bamboo mat, let me know and I will get you one.

Now you know why I use the "grin" Graemlin...it has eyes like mine!

Japanese seaweed is called "nori". It may be an acquired taste for some but I find it tasty. There is nori flavored with soy sauce that is particularly good.

"Sashimi" is the raw fish...a common misnomer that has even made it to the soap operas where they call refer to sushi as raw fish.

Oh...I thought it was kind of strange that so many IBS people
liked and were eating raw fish. I would think that raw fish
would be quite a trigger. I'll have to check out our local
food coop and see if they carry it. Thanks for clueing me in.

Some is made with seaweed (rolls and handrolls).
Some is not - it's just fish and rice (and wasabi, if you must).

Michelle (ecmmbm) posted a picture of the kids and I a month or so ago in the living room. We were photographed for a United Way Campaign.

I am not sleepy...somewhat tense due to this hurricane business. I will see if I can find it and bump it. I hope you're not disappointed!

This what a California Roll is. it is not sushi in the sense that there is no raw fishin it...

If you are going to introduce someone to sushi, this is the way to do it. A California roll contains crab meat, avocado, and cucumber.
Spread about a cup of rice on the sheet of nori, leaving about an inch of uncovered nori at one side. Do not pack the rice, rolling will take care of that. The rice should be less than a 1/4 inch thick -- you should be able to see nori through the rice. The biggest mistake is using too much rice.

Put avocado slices on top of the rice first, one slice thick, near the edge of the rice, the edge opposite the uncovered nori. Unwrap and split a piece of imitation crab meat lengthwise into two pieces. Place the two pieces end to end on top of the avocado. Then add several strips of cucumber next to the crab and on top of the avocado. (If you put the avocado on last, it is a lot messier to roll.)
