Hey guys,
I'm going back for my colonoscopy soon, and I'm trying to think about what to do if the colonoscopy shows that its just IBS.
What perscriptions have you had success with?
i've gotten to the point that even taking four immodium at once isn't a preventative, and that it takes at least three to stop diarrhea (only to go a few hours later).
I'm thinking that maybe immodium just isn't strong enough to stop it! (I started out with pepto bismol about five years ago.. got to the point where I needed five pepto to stop anything... switched to immodium.. worked for a year.. then got way to gassy when I do it.. switched to immodium advanced and now i'm taking four at a time!)
at this rate i'm gonna run outta stuff to try. Any suggestions?

i take donnatol as needed, and preventatively once in a while. it seems to work (hard to tell, since my attacks sometimes just evaporate), but as lots of people here say, the side-effects of spaciness and dry mouth can be intense. it just makes me quiet and a little out-of-it, and *very* thirsty.
i have a feeling donnatol is just my gp's standard prescription for gut tranquilizers. it was the first thing out of his mouth. i'd go talk to your dr. and see what he or she thinks.

I'm not sure what else you've already tried, but what about Lomotil or a tricyclic AD? Donnatol's a good suggestion too. (FYI, you're probably aware of this, but the Imodium Advanced chewables contain sorbitol. The caplets are fine.)
Are you getting any relief from following the EFI diet? Or taking an SFS?

Hey..
I've found some relief from the diet, but def not 100%
Also, i've tried acacia and fibercon for about a year each and neither were successful.

I take Levsin as needed. It's an anti-spasmatic.
For OTC, I will take Pepto-Bismal sometimes if things feel iffy in the morning.

Levsin didn't work for me either! But Donnatol's a lot stronger and you might have better luck with it. I took it the same time I was taking Lomotil (about nine years ago), but, honestly, I was so bad back then with my diet and stress nothing helped. Although, I did end up C for a while from the combination of the two.

i believe it is an anti-spasmodic - it's belladonna alkaloids & phenobarbitol. (and i just got where the name comes from. i'm real quick on the uptake.)

Yeah, if you're still having to take four Imodium and that doesn't always help, it's probably time to get something stronger (if your colonoscopy turns up nothing except IBS--good luck with that by the way ).
I mean an anti-depressant; one of the side effect of the tricyclic ones is supposed to be constipation. Heather talks about them here and here. I've tried them before, for about a year, but I didn't like the other side effects. There are different kinds too (various tricyclics and SSRIs), and I'm sure your doctor would have suggestions or recommendations.
HTH. Take care.

thanks... I'm hoping my doctor will be helpful when it comes down to the final diagnosis.
I've never tried lotomil.. does it work? is it worth it?
Maybe I'll also ask him about trying another antispasmodic. I was on levsin (2 pills 3x daily for about three years) but it really wasn't worth it!
as for the anti depressants, i'd rather not taking anything that changes my mood. My mood is pretty fabulous so I hate to take chances and change something like my personality without needing to.
Does anyone know anything about that new drug Cilansetron
(sp??) or something like that, that is being tested and released soon for IBS-D?
