Hi everyone
I read this board frequently but don't post very often. Like some of you on this site, I'm recovering from an eating disorder but still suffering the effects gut-wise. I just had an appointment this morning with an eating disorders specialist to see if she might offer any fresh perspective on my IBS. She prescribed me domperidone to help improve gastric emptying/motility, scheduled me for an ultrasound and encouraged me to get my weight up and "eat, eat, eat through the pain".
I'm writing from Canada, and I have a feeling domperidone (brand name motilium)is not available in the US, but in any case, have any of you tried it and found it helpful? I am loathe to fill yet another prescription that doesn't do a thing...

I am in a similar situation (I have a slow motility disorder) and I recently have been placed on Domperidone to increase my motility. It is known to have some side effects, but for mosat it works well. However, it takes quite some time to work, anywhere between 2 weeks and a month or so to get going. I have not been taking it long enough to say if it has helped for me personally, but I know many people that it has worked for, if that helps any. For now, like you, I have been told to eat through the pain (i'm sure you understand how hard this is!!) good luck!!

Sorry, I am not an experienced message-boarder- what does "bump" mean? I mean, other than the painful swollen bump that is my tummy right now!

My GI has put me on this as well, I can't tell whether it's working yet as I've only been taking it for a couple of weeks.

What exactly is a motility disorder??

I've tried Reglan and that stuff was awful, awful. I would like to try this if it is available in the States. I too have a screwed up GI system due to a long battle with an Eating Disorder.

Have you noticed any improvement yet while on the drug?

I, too, have been told to eat through the pain...they told me I can die from being too thin, but not from the pain. True, but the pain sure makes me want to die.

Hi, I recently have started Dom. and am still waiting for it to kick in. No, you cannot get it in the US, but you can order it online from Canada easy. Most GI docs will give you a perscription for it (US docs) and from there you have to order it online. Its easy to do. It takes a while to work, but it is safer and better for long term use than reglan. A motility disorder is when you digestive system slows down, making it hard for food to move throgh your stomach properly. You can google easy for more info. Many of us w/ eating disorders have motility issues due to the poor treatment we've put our tummies through. Domperidone is not known to be helpful against IBS, but if you have something like gastroparesis (beth) than it can help ease the pain and nausea caused by it. You can google domperidone, gastoparesis, and motiliy disorders easily for more info--it would be too much for me too type (sorry!)
hth!

..since you live in Maryland? I'm assuming yes?

I've looked at the GP diet already too. I doubt my doctor would give me a script for this if I would need to get it online. I don't think he would go for that!

Thanks for the info.

Do you follow the GP diet? It does not allow SFS or high fiber foods, so how are you having BMs? It doesn't seem to coincide very well with the IBS diet...or at least I can't figure out a way to do it.

Stupid eating disorder screwed my life up permanently.

I definately hear that! Having GP and IBS is the most confusing thing ever! I have to stick to only a moderate amount of fiber (nothing that says "high fiber" on it) and I take Milk of magnesia and zelnorm (sometimes) to stay regular. And LOTS of water. I guess you could say I combine the GP and the IBS diet together. I'll lean towards one more strongly than the other, depending on what's flared up at the time. It's tough. As for the domperidone, I get mine from CanDrug.com, but you do need a perscription from your doc (which you fax into this website) and they send it to you in 2-3 weeks, if not sooner. It was surprisingly reliable.
But yea, you would have to ask you doc about giving you the presciption. But so many US docs do it, I don't think it would be a problem, esp. if you are still having GP issues. Sorry about getting back to you late, I was out of town. Any how, Good Luck!! Let me know if you have any other questions!!
