Hi Ashley, No, usually not. You sit somewhere near the X-ray
table and read magazines and they make you get up on the
table every half hour or so. They also make you drink enough
barium to choke a horse. Good Luck with it! It was bad for
me because I was really constipated when I had it, otherwise
I don't think it will be too bad. -Bob

thanks.. i'm back from it now.

It took a little under 2 hours and I seriously thought I was going to throw up drinking all that barium. She gave me two waterbottles full of it, and I cringe now thinking about it. YUCK.

I spent the rest of the time reading, and feeling like I was going to puke at any minute. The lady tried to be nice and said pretend its a yummy macdonalds vanilla milkshake, but that made it worse bc I've always hated the taste of milkshakes!

I'm not sure if they'll find anything. If they do.. do they usually tell you on the spot.. or does your gastro tell you about it?

I'm supposed to have this procedure done 9/8/05 and I'm "praying" they don't stick anything up inside you. If I'm understanding these postings correctly, you drink the barium and they just x-ray you?

I don't know about that test specifically, but my understanding for tests in general has always been that technicians are never supposed to tell the patients what they've seen, good or bad.

I know. It's horrible. They kept telling me that the barium would help constipate me. I darrhea'd barium for 10 days straight afterward! They did not understand when I told them that the barium was going STRAIGHT through me. I sympathize. The other girl that was drinking barium beside me kept puking it back up. It did not help the experience at all. What we do for doctors these days. It seems like any bodily hole is open game. Sigh.

Heidi, Yes, they make you drink lot's of barium! As I mentioned in the other post enough to choke a horse.
They also make swallow crystals which form lots of gas
in your stomach and esphogas, and watch your peristalsis
on a TV screen. However, they don't stick anything up you.

I know.. before I started my stomach felt rumbly and like I needed to D.. but I held it in because if I figured if I went to the bathroom while drinking the stuff i'd have to keep drinking more and more to replenish what came out.

Anyways.. as I left they told me i'd probably be constipated for days.. but I've already gone 3 times since I've been home.

anyways.. the stuff did taste nasty.. and it kept getting worse and worse. The first bottle I could handle, but by the second bottle I was on the verge of throwing up the whole time.

Ashley, It depends on the Radiologist doing it. My guy thought
he was a comedian and said while watching my esphogas,"Whoa..
Hey buddy, did you know that the bottom third of your esphogas
is dead, you must be drinking too much beer, eh". I said,"
What, Are you joking? with IBS, yeah right!" He also said
my small intestines were indicative of someone who has
chronic D. I told him that it was just due an allergic
reaction I had with Zelnorm, but he didn't listen. My
GI doc just completely dismissed his report anyway
knowing it was mostly erroneous due to the Zelnorm
reaction. -Bob
