I have been taking Heather's peppermint pills in the morning before I eat. Somedays within 15 min. of taking the pills I burp up them up, I can taste the peppermint etc. Here is what I do.
Get up take pill w/about 4 oz of water (or less)
Sometimes I go back to bed
Wait 1/2 hour to hour before eating
Do I not drink enough water? If I drink too much on an empty stomach I feel bloated and usually get a headache.
Should I not lie down after?
Should I not take them in the morning and take it between breakfast and lunch?
I do not have GERD or any upper GI problems.
Suggestions?

How long have you been using the pills? My dad bought me some after reading how much they were supposed to help, but they ended up being a nightmare for me...they would cause minty-smelling (not so bad!), but terribly burning D for me. I tried only taking one a day, and at different times, with food, without food... but 30 minutes later, I was minty and burning with an attack. Peppermint tea, however, works wonders for me. I drink close to six or seven big cups a day, and I find it soothing and very effective.

Like many things with IBS, there are things some of us can handle that just makes others shudder in imagined pain. I would try using the tea instead, if the symptoms are causing more pain with the pills.

If you have any predisposition to acid reflux lying down will be a major problem. Some people can't take the pills at all because of GERD. I haven't had a single problem with them. I didn't find they helped that much some time ago, but now I take them if I feel I will get gurgly and they help tremendously.

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!
