What kind of spices can be used? My wife has IBS and is very wary of using any spices....thyme, oregano, basil, etc......
Any and ALL help would be appreciated

Unfortunately, this is another thing that's up to personal tolerance and a lot of trial and error. I can eat ANY spices - any at all, mild, hot, doesn't matter. But there are IBS'ers who can't tolerate even ginger, which is one of the best seasonings for digestive health.

Sooooo... assuming you're following the diet guidelines here on the site, avoid the spices while you're doing the breaking-the-cycle diet, and then gradually start adding spices in. I wish I could give you a list of what's safe and what isn't, but this is one area where such a thing doesn't exist - she just has to try them and see how she does.

Good luck!

Note that herbs are usually better tolerated than spices. I count ginger, paprika, cumin, etc as spices and the green ones as herbs. I do fine with ALL herbs and just can't have very hot (spicy hot) foods, but that's mainly b/c of GERDs not IBS.

I find that using spices is ok but does require a little moderation. You don't want bland food. I find that garlic, onion, chives, etc give me trouble. If mildly used, I can sorta deal with them, but things that produce gas can cause IBS sufferers a lot of heartache even though they make things taste better. Some people don't have as much problem with certain herbs and seasonings as others do, you can use an elimination process to figure what causes more problems than others.
