HELP! I have only been on Heathers diet 2 days. Tomorrow i have a lunch date I can't break. We might go to Applebees or Friendly's what can I eat? All I have had for the last 2 days is plain rice, pasta, ff saltines and Kix cereal with rice milk. Now I'm not sure if this is wishful thinking but this diet might be working. ( I am IBS-c) I don't want to go and mess this up. Any menu options anyone knows of? Thanks to anyone who takes the time to respond! I appreciate it!

Don't be scared, just keep it safe.

I found this on a previous post.

But this might be too much fo you on the basic diet, I would stick with very plain and order off-menu.

We talk about eating out and restaurants a lot so if you do a search you may find more info- the general advice is to interrogate your server!

The first meals I ate out after starting the diet were grilled chicken or fish with no sauce with plain rice or pasta. I asked for no oil and no dairy to be used. Keep within the diet rules by asking the server questions and tell them you are allergic rather than intolerant, they take it more seriously!

Good luck

Your safest bet: I like grilled chicken sandwiches. You get a big bun (your soluble fibre) and the grilled chicken is low in fat and safe. Make sure there's no cheese or bacon and ask for the mayo on the side (use very little as it's high in fat). Ask for a baked potato on the side, and ask for salsa for a topping, or some margarine (NO BUTTER!). If all else fails, eat the baked potato plain.

Grilled chicken platters are good too, if you can get grilled or steamed veggies and a baked potato.
I would steer clear of any creamy pastas.
A tomato based pasta might be all right if you can tolerate tomato based pastas.
Seafood is OK, as long as it's not swarming in butter or cream sauces. Ask for it grilled.

I've written to Applebee's, and they don't "guarentee" ingredients or list them in any way. "We don't want to be responsible for someone getting sick, etc, etc."

We don't have a Friendly's in our area, so I haven't contacted them.

I would recommend just ordering a baked potato ABSOLUTELY plain. I find that actually saying "absolutely" helps, because if you just order a "plain baked potato" they often forget/ don't notice and bring it with butter. And, I agree. Food allergies are taken very seriously, so using that as your explanation is short, quick, to-the-point, and gets things to happen your way. I would avoid the buns/ grilled meats with possible glazes/ sauces unless you get a wonderful server or a helpful manager who will show you ingredient lists/ packages or be willing to guarantee that its safe (and you have a sense that they actually checked, and are not just blowing you off). Sometimes people are wonderful helpful, and you can adapt/ combine different menus items and have a wonderful meal. But, if you sense that they are hurried, or not taking you seriously, stick with the plain potato. Until you're stable, its best not to let even small amounts of triggers sneak in. My rule is, if you don't list all the ingredients, and I can't see each individual ingredient, I'm going to stick with something I know is safe. (Ex. Dairy, Eggs, etc might be in bread, but you can't tell if they are or not--it might be safe, but it's not worth it to me to risk it). Either of those restruants probably serves rice also, so you might be able to have rice and potatos. And you can use the salt and pepper at your table to add some flavor yourself. (Or stick your favorite spice bottle in your purse--I've done that before also.)

Also, be aware that restruant portion are often large than any tummy (especially an irritable one) needs, so it might help to decide when you get the plate how much of it you are going to eat.

Good luck, and I hope you can relax and enjoy your meal, and your dining companions (that's what it's all about, right?)

Warning - they put jalapenous in the salsa on the Mango Salsa Tilapia and I found it very spicy. I also had an attack afterwards, but not sure if maybe something else contributed to it...

I've had the teriyaki shirmp skewers many times and have had no problem with them!
