My 3 year old son has reflux disease and the medications he is on is causing him to be quite constipated. We really don't want to keep him on laxatives. One doctor has told us that he should avoid carrots, apples and bananas. I know bananas can be constipating but I thought apples and carrots were full of fibre. Can someone help me with this? I don't want to take away the only fruits and veggies he'll eat. He doesn't eat very well as it is as he is often in pain with the reflux and constipation. Help me please!!!!

Well, I am not a doctor, but I would think apples and carrots would not be constipating. However, apples are very acidic, so that might upset his reflux problem. Have you tried introducing him to other fruits like mangos or nectarines.

Also, my friend's little baby had some type of reflux problem and they went in and did somthing to the little flapper valve between the esphagus and stomach. And also and older guy I know, (like 50 years old), had the same type of surgery for his acid reflux. Has the Doctor suggested anything like that.

First might I say, boy, I think it's no fair that the little guys get reflux too.

Having said that, I have severe GERD too, and IBS-A, which means I'm often between diarrhea and constipation. When I'm constipated, my GERD is so much worse. My doctor is sending me to a specialist who may perform the surgery-where they take some of your stomach and wrap it around your esophagus to give you a new sphincter(ring of muscle) there. Apparently it works well. I'm really hoping I qualify for it.

Now, for the C.... is it OK to get him some fiber into a milkshake or something? I make a smoothie of sorts, out of soy milk, soy protein powder, Metamucil and some fruit. It's delicious and that way I don't have to gag down fiber.

I'd think if he had his fiber in the form of smoothies like that, and you could get more liquid into him (I know, it's an uphill battle with reflux to get liquid in, I hate drinking.) Also if you tossed in another fruit into the blender that would be a sneaky way of getting it into him.

As far as bananas and apples go, they are soluble fiber, not INSOLUBLE, and insoluble might be what he needs more of. Does he have the apple skin? That's important. That would be an insoluble fiber source. Also any grains or cereals will help him out.

Let us know how little tiger does...I know how miserable it is, and I'm old enough to have the words to gripe about it. The little ones get the short stick.

A few of the many books I've read on GI problems suggest eating grated apples to help diarrhea. I don't understand why, but it could be that that the inside of apples are more soluble :confused

a friend & i have found prevacid to be the best one. i've noticed that prevacid is less constipating. (she doesn't have that issue to contend with).

Actually he's already on Prevacid as well as Zantac and Metoclopramide for motility. It's not helping very much. The only thing it's really helped is his vomiting. He is still refluxing and aspirating it into his lungs.

Actually, yes, he will be having surgery to correct this. We have an appointment to meet with the surgeon to discuss the surgery in August. We are praying that once we can get him off all the meds that his body will begin to work properly again.

Yes, it really is hard to have a child with this disease. He is often awake at night with all the coughing. And the constipation is not helping. Thanks for all your concern and I will try to get him to eat some more fruit. I will also try to slip some Acacia into his drinks to get some more fibre into his diet.
