hi everyone, well after 4 weeks of severe stomach pain,a colon cleansing and doing everything my gastro recommended I still can't eat anything with out crying because of the pain, gas and bloting.
about 1 1/2 hours ago I took my very first zelnorm, and just now had terrible Diarrhea,my bellys going crazy and I feel a little drugged. I thought I read somewhere that getting Diarrhea is common with this med for the first few days? does this seem right to those of you who have used it?
thanks very much
hugs,Betty

I'm sorry you're still so miserable and wish I could be more help than I'm going to be.

I don't take Zelnorm, but if you don't want to wait for someone more knowlegeable to come along, you can try doing a Search for "Zelnorm". When I first started posting someone told me that the Boards were quieter on weekends than on weekdays, so if you're in a hurry the Search might give you info quicker.

You might also want to look for "colon cleansing". I think you'll find there is some strong sentiment that it can make things worse rather than better for some people.

And I'm glad to see you on the Boards again. Welcome back.

thanks very much sand I appreciate you taking the time tp reply to me,I will do a colon cleansing search, good idea.
The severe D lasted 4 hours but it did stop most of the pain. like you said hopefully someone whos used zelnorm will see this post, the problem is it gets buried so fast. are we allowed to "bump" here?
thanks again

I'm glad you're feeling better. Aren't new medicines exciting?

Even though you're no longer in desperate need of immediate advice about Zelnorm, I'd still recommend trying the Search on it. It's amazing how much information is out on the Boards.

I've seen people bump so I assume it's okay.

I wasn't much help on Friday night and I'm afraid this got buried in the Volatile landslide. Even if Betty found the info on Zelnorm with her Search, I'd still like someone who knows about Zelnorm to let her know not everyone is as clueless as I am - and provide some moral support.

Thanks!

HI! I took Zelnorm for about three to four weeks. I am normally C and the first day I took it I had D very bad that night. Things calmed a bit after that, but I noticed that every 3 days I would have a spell with D. I also noticed that it made my colon spasm during the day on the left side. It felt like little butterflies! It almost reminded me of when I was pregnant and started to just feel the baby kick. Some people have had a lot of luck with Zelnorm, but I personally did not. My doctor told me I would have D the first two to three days being on it but that it should go away. However mine didn't! Hope that helps!!

I asked my doctor about it but being a D he said not to touch it with a 10 foot pole as it helps C'ers go therefore if you're an A or a D you get lot's of D. It's doubtful it will stop. HTH.

Hi welcome to the boards!! Sorry I didn't see this sooner - was a busy weekend..and now my girls have off for Spring break. I love zelnorm. I use it for my pain-predominant IBS. Yes, I have IBS-C. I did get D for a couple of days. I have been on it since October. I love it.

I used Zelnorm and did get the diarrhea for the first couple of days. But this eventually did go away.

I'm an IBS C and pain. I take Miralax daily for the C. When Zelnorm came out a couple of years ago, my dr switched me to it. I did have some serious D for a couple of days and it did seem to help a bit with the pain but it seemed to completely stop working after just a couple of weeks, so I went back on the Miralax. Now, I take miralax everyday but have some Zelnrom on hand for bad spells. If I get a really bad pain spell, I'll switch to the Zelnrom for a couple of days than back to the miralax.

I've heard a lot of people say they also "build up a tolerance" to the Zelnorm but than I've heard of a couple of people who have taken it long term and seem to do fine! I think its worth trying for a little while and see how you do! The D should go away in a few days, if not, than I would call the dr! Remember to drink extra fluid when you are D so as not to get dehydrated!

And yes, if your post gets "lost" in the shuffle and they do sometimes, feel free to bump it!

I so know what you mean about the baby kicks!! I was seriously considering a PG test because I have felt that too recently...and had a very wimpy last AF. TOOO STRANGE!

LOL< I got pregnant with my daughter in the middle of my last teaching practicum, it'd be odd to get PG the same time 3 years later. Of course, I'm on BCP.

I know this is a few days late but I have been really busy and haven't had a chance to check in. But anyway I take Zelnorm and love it. Yes I did have the diaherra the first few days but after that it does get better. I now have BMs everyday and sometimes two or three times a day. Before I was lucky if I had one every two or three days. I don't have the pain in my side any more. I love it!!! For me it was a god send. I don't know how I made it through before without it.

I do hope it works for you.

it has been all along. but whoa, I'm going like 5 times a day! Cool or what?
I hope not to be on it for long though, the fewer meds the better. i'm on 2 for asthma, 2 for allergies(I get a NASTY stuffed nose with hayfever)and Zantac for my GERD....it's be so nice if this diet would let me just eat well and take metamucil every day!I hope!!!!

But I'm so glad you are feeling good. i must admit, i haven't been C since the barium swallow 1 1/2 weeks ago. Ahhh!!

I'm new at this and I may have lost the first response. I've suffered w/IBS since my early thirties. Anxiety/tension were always the culprits. I remember my doc putting me on Zelnorm, but at that time the Food & Drug Admin gave it a bad rap, so I took myself off it. When my IBS flares up and my symtoms are severe w/spasms and unpredictable bouts of diarreha, I've found that the drug "levbid" helps me thru the worst of it. I stay on a very bland repitious diet of what I've learned to be my safe foods for a good while, until my bowel movements go back to normal. The levbid does give me dry mouth, nd its annoying, but I grin and bear it until the uncomfortable symtoms subside. I've had to stay on it for up to 9 days. My GI doc subscribes one every 12 hours. I wish you well.

I would like to try Levbid for cramps and spasms, but I heard it might make C worst. Do you become C when your are taking it? Is there any med out there that helps with pain and won't make C worst?

Thank you sooo much for the helpful info always.
Blessings,
Abi
