I was at the grocery store today and noticed that General Mills is now making all its cereal "whole grain," including rice chex, and I think honeycombs, which were "safe" foods. I bought generic rice chex and don't know if they are any good yet. So in an effort to make America healthier, they made our lives harder. Any advice?

dont u ever think once you find something you really love and is safe, they have to find some way to ruin it?

WELL...rice chex was THE ONE AND ONLY cereal i could eat, i have tried all the "safe cereals" (rice crispies, cheerios, honeycombs, etc.) and becuz i am so allergic to HFCS and any kind of corn, i was limited to rice chex. AND WOULDNT YOU KNOW IT, they added whole grains...INSOLUABLE FIBER.

A few months ago i was eating rice chex and felt sick EVERYTIME and i thought i was going through a spat of attacks, then i read the label and said "what a minute, since when does rice chex contain brown rice??".

i really was beyond devestated because rice chex was MY MAIN STAPLE when i could eat nothing. FORTUNATELY, some stores havnt updated their inventory yet, so on the rare chance, i still find the old boxes.

In search of an equivalent, i discovered name brand rice chex. i shop at stop and shop and bought a generic shop and stop brand rice squares cereal and it has the SAME EXACT ingredients as the old rice chex. Up at school, we have price chopper, and their generic rice squares brand has the same ingredients, as do albertons in florida (i found out over spring break visiting my grandparents.)

WITH ALL THAT SAID, if you (or others) are very sensitive to whole grains, i suggest searching your local supermarket for the generic brand of rice chex, not all stores are the same (some add HFCS) but most i have found are safe.

hope this helps!!

I wouldn't touch anything that says "whole grain". Not even with a ten foot pole.

Personally I am still okay with whole grain corn, oats and rice. Especially oats- since we all eat oatmeal. Whole grain wheat on the other hand is a no-no. I don't know what is in honeycomb, but I eat HNC, cap'n crunch, and I would eat rice chex.

"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

Thanks for the info! My mom lives near a Price Chopper. I guess she'll have to be my generic rice chex "dealer." I got some generic Walmart rice chex. The label looked okay for me, but I won't really know until I try them.

Why don't you eat whole grain? Does it give you specific problems???
I recently started eating Honey nut cheerios and noticed some different symptoms, just wondering why you personally stay away.
Thanks

Anything that says "whole grain" usually implies that it's made with mostly insoluble fibre which is a major trigger. I cannot tolerate IF that way. I can tolerate it much better in fruits and veggies, but as for grains, I can't tolerate it at all.

Last week I bought the generic Walmart version of both the rice and corn chex and haven't had any problems with them. The only thing I have noticed of difference is if you make the Honey Crunch snack mix with them, be a bit more careful since they burn a bit quicker-at about 4 minutes, even stirring every 45 seconds.
