Right before I have an attack I break out in a cold sweat, my stomach starts turning and burning and I blackout. It is like a wave washes over me, the room actually spins. Has anyone else every had this happen with IBS? My body temp spikes and my blood pressure goes up with this but I lose all control of my bowels. My docs thought is was just my blood pressure but I have been on meds for this and followed orders. Last week my husband and I were on vacation in the middle of a casino and this happened. My stomach had been rolling the entire time because I had ate pepperoni pizza and had 1 beer about 3 hours prior! I am just about to the end of my rope with the docs on this..it has been going on for about 7 years and they have always gone with heart problems instead of gastro...I had a friend tell me that she thought is might be IBS. I have read and read posts but didn't see anything re: my bouts!

Welcome! I've never had an experience *quite* as bad as that, but then again, I don't eat pepperoni pizza or drink beer! I do have some of that before and with an attack. I feel feverish, a little dizzy and sometimes just weak, almost flu-like. Then after the attack, I'm completely worn out and end up sleeping for a couple hours. When I wake up, I'm fine.

You can start by following the IBS diet as recommended here on the site - it definitely can't hurt - even if you DO have heart problems, it's a very heart-healthy diet, low in fat and high in soluble fiber. Definitely read through the material in that link.

If you're suspecting GI tract problems and your doctor isn't cooperative, definitely see a gastroenterologist for some tests. IBS is diagnosed by ruling out other problems by a series of tests, including bloodwork, a colonoscopy, and possibly a gallbladder ultrasound. I would take symptoms like that seriously and seek medical attention from someone who's willing to listen and work with you. Blacking out just isn't normal!

I had my gallbladder removed 2 years ago. It was full of stones. They put me on Previcid for acid reflux but these have always been my symptoms. I recently tried eating all broiled/boiled foods and it did seem to help. Of course I was eating all the salads and fresh veggies I could..I ate raw cauliflower last month and thought I would die! I hit the floor then to! About 11 years ago I had an endo and they removed polps but didn't say anything about them other than they were gone...
My aunt has chrones really bad...she has had many surgeries to remove intestines...is this hereditary?
I am scheduled to see my doc again the first part of next month and I am going to insist on the tests for IBS. In the meantime I have been reading and getting recipies off of the posts on this site...it is a wealth of information..
About 4 years ago I had a bout with intestinal bacteria..my doc didn't test me just said that was what I had and gave me meds! My back is killing me..I thought I was having food reactions..especially to pork and pizza but now it seems that it can be anything I eat..very hard to understand and what a life change!

I've had that happen many times when I'm having an attack. However, fainting is my primary response to extreme pain and has always been.

I now know that if I feel like I'm going to have an attack, I need to get some place safe or let someone know that I am having an attack just in case I faint. Otherwise, I'll have the paramedics leaning over me for something I know is perfectly normal for me.

My scariest experience is when I was driving to work and passed out while driving! So please, if you feel like an attack is coming on and you're driving - pull over! And also try to limit that pepperoni pizza and beer if you do have IBS.

One way to find out if you have IBS is to have your doctor run some tests to rule out everything else. Either check out Heather's book or poke around the site. Both are full of helpful information that can help you and your doctor diagnose IBS.

I worry about driving to..I usually know when it's going to happen but sometimes not soon enough to get somewhere safe..In the past I have always had an extemely high tolerance for pain so it is really surprising how this has effected me.
I printed out all the safe foods and snacks and will begin them tonight when I get home from work..I am insisting my doctor give me these tests, this has been going on far to long...Thank you for the info I was beginning to think I was the only one out there that hit the floor before an attack! You be careful driving as well.

So you guys are in good company. I get dizzy with really bad attacks but don't actually faint.

Like Jen said, get the tests done and start on this diet. The more stable you get, the fewer attacks you'll have so the less often you'll faint!

Btw, I know Heather has had great success with peppermint attacks for the pain.

Thanks for the info..right now I am eating only safe foods and actually can tell a little difference. The green tea is taking some getting used to but I would do anything to feel better. I had no idea there was so many people in the world that had this...It is great to be able to discuss this and not have people think your crazy!

Not with ibs but the first few years that I got my period my cramps were atrocious and I would faint. They're still pretty bad but I don't faint anymore. I think it's just your bodies way of dealing with way too much pain.

...the regular stuff contains a little caffeine (I believe you can get decaf tho). Peppermint is ALOT better.

Peppermint - best for cramps and pain (but should be avoided if you have GERDs/heartburn).

Fennel - best for bloating and gas.

Ginger - best for nausea (but should be avoided if you have GERDs/heartburn).

Chamomile - a good all-rounder (also good for stress/anxiety) and the best substitute for peppermint if you have GERDs.

These 4 are the main IBS aids, although there are others that we can drink that have less medicinal properties.
