I belch constantly all day long Not noisy burbs, but silent belches, usually first thing when I get out of bed and then all day and worst at dinner time.

I don't have "acidic" taste. I don't understand what is causing all the belching. I don't do any of the obvious causes: soda, straws, gum, and I don't think I eat too much in one sitting or any food or beverage that isn't safe. Pretty much same amount I see others posting when reporting in or posting on eating board.

Can anyone tell me why or more importantly, what I can do to stop this constant belching?

Any input would be appreciated.

Am I the only one who has this constant burping/belchin? Don't know what the difference is between the two terms!

I have this problem too! Although I have noticed it's lessened a little bit since I've been on the IBS diet. I don't know if it's caused by anything I'm eating or just a nervous habit...

Could it be you're just swallowing a lot of air? I know I do that when I'm anxious or just drinking from a glass/cup. A friend recommended breathing out before I take drink and that actually has helped!

I don't know that you use any of these, but anti-diarrheals like Immodium can cause burping and bloating. I've also heard that some other meds and supplements, like pain killers, fiber and iron, can cause an increase in gas which leads to burping.

Hope this helps. At least they're silent and don't hurt, right?

I get this sometimes after a meal. It'll last for a few hours and they're only small burps but they drive me crazy! Don't really have a solution. Are you maybe eating too fast? I get this particularly after having thrown down a meal in a hurry but otherwise sorry no idea.

I get quite alot of gas too, mostly belching. I find fennel helps, and after i've had a cup, it usually gets all the wind up!

Have you been checked out for GERDs? I know you daid thy weren't acidic, but you never know. It's a bummer, isn't it. I don't even know what I did to combat this symptom...it just went away as I stabilised, so I'm no help.

I didn't realize there was an actual test for this. What is the treatment? Certain foods to avoid?

I don't eat any citrus or acidic foods. Just cream of rice, some peeled fruits, veggie root soup, brown rice, quinoa, millet, cooked spinach, squash and green beans, and some Kettle Krisp low fat potato chips.

I don't drink peppermint tea or giner tea.

Thanks for trying to help. Wish I knew the secret. Mine is so out of control.

As I am a severe C!! So that's out. And it starts first think when I stand up out of bed in the morning, so I haven't had any anxiety yet, except for the blasted sound of the alarm clock!

I will try breathing out before drinking, but I am so obsessed with eating and drinking and counting oz and fiber and timing supplements, etc, this just seems like one more IBS thing to become obsessed about. (I have an obsessive personality and some OCD)

When did normal things like pooping, eating, breathing, drinking, ...living become so unnatural. We don't have to monitor every heartbeat, it just happens naturally. That's how these other bodily functions should be!

So that's out! I have it before even eating anything at all. Even after just drinking, or waking up and getting out of bed. But it is worse after eating, especially dinner.

But I don't eat too fast. Yes, annoying, and I guess no one really has a solution.

for constant belching, huh? Darn, this is so annoying and yucky. I know when I belch, it is usually followed up with gas coming out the other end!

What a mes my body is in! Coming from both ends!

Would it be a bad idea to take something like an OTC PIP, such as prilosec? I know this shuts down the acid pumps, so it may interfer with the acids to help digest food. I don't burp acidic tastes, so it is probably gas? Would PIP hurt then?

I think I will try calling my doctor, but know he will do nothing, once again. Good for nothing doctor. He never does anything but tell me not to worry about it. That's his standard answer for any symptom. I'm trying to find another doc btw!

Thanks to all who replied! I so appreciate all you guys!

Good morning Beth,

I'm IBS-D w/GERD. I had the same complaint when I went to the doctor last year about the constant burping even if I didn't eat anything at all I would burp all day. He prescribed a digestive enzyme called Ku-Zyme (which is amalyse, protease and lipase combined) and it has helped me tremendously. Now I only get normal burps (w/meals, soda, etc.). I hope this helps you.

When I was on meds for IBS, I found LOSEC very helpful. I was on it and Prepulsid, which has since been pulled off the market. LOSEC is a great acid controller. Ask your good for nothing Doc. Is there any possiblity of seeing another Doc?

For me they looked down my throat while I was asleep w/ a little camera. And then they prescribed Nexium which is my miracle pil for GERDS. But then th insurance company said no more Nexium so I had to get another test done. This time they stuck a tube down my nose into mytummy and measured the amount of acid and it was off the charts,so insurance company was forced to cover.

I am supposed to avoid caffiene, citrus, and tomato sauces, chocolate, or spicy stuff. (Not a problem since I can't have most of those w/ IBS anyway.) I am supposed to wear loose clothes so I don't compress my tummy and sit upright for several hours after eating. And if using something OTC try anti-acid meds like Maalox,Mylanta,Tums or something.

Good Luck,
Christie

And no those foods don't look too bad. I have a major problem with IF, but I know you eat way more of that than me cos of your C.

...don't completely shut down acid production, they just inhibit it. If your doc won't do anyway it could be worh a try...if the prilosec works, then it's almost certainly GERDs. You do have to take it for at least a few weeks tho...and at least 6-8 weeks if it is GERDs and needs stabilising.

Hi Beth!! I have had this also on and off, and it has been a little worse lately, and I think it is due to GERD. Taking Zantac seems to help with it, but it doesn't entirely go away. I always get it after eating, but usually not before. It used to be a LOT worse before I changed my diet, so there you go, but of course you are already watching your diet carefully I'm sorry I can't offer more advice, and I know EXACTLY what you mean about becoming obsessive about foods, eating, symptoms, etc. I am the same way. It is getting worse with my anxiety and now GERD, I hope if I get that under control it will improve. Maybe I am a tad OCD as well?? I'm sorry about that, I know how annoying it is to overanalzye EVERYTHING! Good luck and hope something helps you.

I found i have far more wind when i havent eaten enough. When i started the exclusion diet, i really wasnt eating enough, and suffered far worse wind than i do now. I still have a problem with it, which fennel does help i think, but its one of the easier symptoms of ibs to live with .

what are you eating now that has helped this belching? Are you doing this diet on your own or is someone giving you suggestions? What do your daily menus look like?

It is hard to do this by yourself. I don't know how to, at least.

I get the belching even before eating, but maybe will try the zantac anyhow. I don't know which is better and safest to start with, zantac or prilocec.

Did you have any test done to confirm that you actually have GERDS? Or is your doc relying on symptoms alone?

I just don't want to take a med if I really don't have GERDS. Maybe the belching is just trapped gas coming up the other end. Oh, this darn body is so screwed up!

Do you think it would be better to start off with zantac or prilosec OTC without having a definate diagnosis? I just don't want to take something if I really don't need it, or if GERD is not my problem. But I am so blasted tired of this belching. Yuck! So annoying and makes me more gassy at the other end too.

I don't know if anything I'm eating now is helping since it seems to be a little worse (although strawberries were one thing that triggered it recently, they're so acidic ) I basically follow the IBS diet, I eat hot cereal (oatmeal/bran, cream of rice, etc) for b-fast or a protein smoothie with powder, ricemilk, banana/mango, and I use flaxseed or almond meal in the morning. I eat breads and rice cakes during the day, with soy yogurts, nut butters, sometimes cooked veggies (which I have been cutting back on) or soup. I also eat like wheat free Fig Newmans or cookies as treats, also avocadoes and Earth Balance butter for fats. I have had no diagnostic test to determine GERD, we are sort of in the process right now...When I mentioned the diet helping, I meant before I changed it to accomodate IBS, which was like 2 years ago, so I don't know if that is really relevant anymore I understand how you feel, I don't really want to take meds either. Sorry you are dealing with this too!! Talk to you soon.

I think since you are a C you probably shouldn't be cutting back on your veggies and may need some additonal fruits besides a banana or a mango. Like cooked peeled apples or nectarines?

You need to do what feels best for your body, though. But I know if I cut out veggies and fruits, I would probably be more C than I already am!

Can you do cream of brown rice cereal instead of cream of white? That would give you more fiber as well.

But I'm probably not the best person to be taking advice from these days! As I am in great pain!

You make a good point about the IF. I already eat a lot of whole grain breads and usually whole grain cereals, and hopefully the flaxseed will keep me going too! I plan to eat some other fruits and some veggies, but I will just have to see how it goes I guess Not sure what else to do at this point since I need to gain weight. I am seeing a dietician next week and maybe she will have some advice. I appreciate your concern and I definitely value your opinion; you are quite knowledgeable and I'm sorry that it's not translating into you feeling better Thanks again!
