Comfort foods and getting away with cheating?

Two silly questions:

1) I was wondering what are some comfort foods my fellow IBSers enjoy? For example, after work I like to have a couple of scoops of French Vanilla Soy Dream mixed with a handful of chocolate Teddy Grahams.

2) Are there any trigger foods that AREN'T necessarily a trigger for you? For some reason, I'm able to tolerate eating a small order of fast food fries. I don't do it often, but I sure do love my French fries! I felt so giddy (and even a little guilty) when I learned that I can still enjoy one of my old favorites.

Fat is one of the triggers I can also push the limits with. For me, I can get fish'n'chip shops chips (which are chunky), but I still can't eat McDonalds fries (which are skinny and so have a higher percentage of fat).

Just be especially careful until you're stable as you can set yourself back if you overdo it.

I definitely do not want to overdo it...Especially since I've been doing so well on this diet. But I'm just happy that I can have a few extra-tasty fries once in a while.

I've read a few of your posts where you mention eating avocados. I love avocados, but was staying away from anything high in fat while I was being treated for gastroenteritis. That was last year; I'm doing better now, just trying to put the weight back on. So, tonight I ate a little more than a tablespoon of avocado. Delicious! I was wondering how much you are able to tolerate eating?

I don't think I really have comfort foods... I have specific cravings depending on how I'm feeling. When I'm hormonal, I definitely want chocolate, and usually go with an ADB or some chocolate-applesauce bread. Most of the time, though, I tend to just want potatoes. LOL!

As for triggers... even 2 or 3 fries would send me running for the bathroom, so you're lucky... but I have to admit that I have no problems at all drinking soda. I'm not sensitive to HFCS. I still mostly avoid drinking it, though - first because I don't want to push my luck, and second because I really don't need the extra calories!

LOL! I cravey potatoes ALL THE TIME! Which is much better than craving cheese - one of the hardest things for me to give up, I craved it all the time, but not so much any more really.

To be honest I really don't cheat... Fries and ice cream? I'd be gone, running off to the bathroom, see ya... but that's great that you can tolerate them.

I actually don't really feel the need to cheat so that's what keeps me on track! Most of the time when I'm going wonky with my stomach it's because I've eaten too much at one sitting, or neglected to take my Acacia, or because of stress. Trigger foods just don't make appearances in my house any more so that helps!

Heh, that probably wasn't a very helpful response to your question was it Maria? sorry!

I can't drink anything carbonated or high in HFCS. I miss my 7-Up! But this message board is really helping me not crave certain trigger foods by offering even better alternatives. Until I came here, I didn't know about Luna bars--and now I'm addicted!

Your response was great! I like to hear how you all are handling the diet and temptations. And it's inspiring to hear that you don't cheat at all. Bravo!

I wish it was real ice cream! It's really a "soy frozen dessert"--so no lactose, no milk protein. Actually, I haven't had dairy in about ten years, so I don't crave it anymore. But the real-deal ice cream comes in more flavors than the Soy Dream desserts.

B/c I have a higher tolerance to fat levels than some people I am fine with any amount of avocado...as long as i have some SF as well. They are only high in fat for a vegetable! Compared to fries they're low in fat.

I, too, like the Luna bars. But I have stayed away from them because I thought they were too high in fat. Does anyone know what is an acceptable level of fat grams for the Luna and Pria bars?

So you like the Soy Dream? I haven't tried it yet-but if you say it's good, I will. I've had the Rice Dream-but it tastes so bad, I may as well eat nothing at all!

Oooh yeah those are good. Have you tried the rice dream versions? They have this vanilla rice dream on a stick thing all covered in carob...mmmmm I always feel so guilty when I'm eating something like that, like I'm cheating - but I'm not!

(Heh, I totally wrote "cravey" in that last post... I could edit it but it's just too funny... lol)

Marshmallows! And chocolate soy milk. You can even have them together- heat the chocolate soy milk and then let the marshmallows melt on top! mmmmm!

I can "cheat" with desserts as long as I have a safe dinner, so I have gotten away with an odd slice of cheesecake or chocolate dessert and even icecream once.

I am afraid to get back into a lot of my comfort foods I used to love though, just in case I pile back on the pounds. I love a heary chicken casserole and some mashed potatoes as a savoury comfort food. For sweet treats i love haribo jelly sweeties mmmm and Luna bars (especially Nutz over Chocolate and Smores)

I really like the French Vanilla and the strawberry flavors. I think Soy Dream tastes better than Rice Dream.

Soy Delicious Purely Decadent frozen desserts are probably the best tasting (especially the Peanut Butter Zig Zag), but these are a little higher in fat and contain carageenan (which can be a trigger for some people). You can check out Soy Delicious flavors here.

Mmmm. It's rainy out, and I could use a nice mug of hot chocolate soy milk and marshmallows right now! I hadn't thought of heating up the chocolate soy milk...I haven't had hot chocolate in years. Is there a particular brand that you prefer? I've been drinking 8th Continent.

Just noticed-that recipe calls for 1/3 cup of oil. Wouldn't that make them worse for you than the "No-pudge" brownies, which don't call for oil, only applesauce?

COCO pops AND Choc soy milk? I use normal Rice Krispies with them but is the Coco Pops crazy heavy?

I have heard that the vanilla carob ones are super good, but when I saw them at Whole Foods, I noticed that they have like 14 grams of fat per bar!! That seemed like way too much fat, so I was too scared to buy them But they don't bother you? They sound delicious and I am supposed to gain weight, so the extra fat would be good if I could tolerate them...Thanks!

...tha really count with IBS...25% or less for each dish/meal. So the amount of oil in ADBs is fine as it's a low percentage. PLUS, you mustn't cut fats out COMPLETELY! A little healthy fats are needed for health reasons.

Personally I can tolerate higher, but that's just me.

Fries do not seem to bother me, either. Neither does Popeye's fried chicken or venison, a red meat. I theorize the venison doesn't bother me because it's so lean. Why Popeye's doesn't bother me much, I really don't understand, but I'm not going to argue!

...(like me) have a higher tolerance to fat than "normal" IBSers. But don't push it and be very careful to check for other triggers. Also, it helps you to stabilise faster if you do cut out the higher fat foods as they're pretty hard on your GI system even if they're not a particular trigger of yours.

Oooooh 14g? Wow that's high.

I must confess, I haven't had them in years - I've been allergic to milk my whole life so I've always had soy and rice milk subsitutes, but I've only had IBS for about 2 years, and I probably haven't had one of those bars since then. I certainly wouldn't be able to tolerate the 14g of fat.

Sorry to get your hopes up! Damn that's too bad... those things are so good...

I don't know. To me, the rice dream just has the texture of thin ice milk-not ice cream. I don't care for it much at all. I'm hoping I can tolerate something with soy.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I just tried Soy Delicious Purely Decadent in Chocolate Obsession. Let me just tell you, this is the best fake ice cream ever. I am a chocolate ice cream fanatic and this stuff is great. I don't think people would be able to tell the difference between this and the real stuff. Of course, look out for the relatively high fat content -- 9 grams per 1/2 cup -- but it is dairy free and very good. After a good SF meal, a small portion should be safe for most people. So yummy. I can't wait to try that peanut butter one!

At first, when I tried Soy Delicious PB Zig Zag, I thought it was too good to be true! Even my friends who can eat dairy, prefer Soy Delicious to some of the "real" ice cream products. You're right: you can't eat too much at one time and it makes a good dessert. I'm glad you liked it!

Oh I will have to try that one Panda! I love anything chocolate.

Maria I love the peanut butter zig zag! At a nearby dollar store they sell it for $1.00 a pint!!! In the regular store I pay almost 4 bucks. At first I thought something would be wrong with it but it tasted just fine. When I went back they were running a sale for 2 for $1.00! Let's just say my freezer is very full of this tasty flavor!!!

What?! A $1.00 a pint! That's awesome! I usually wait until they're on sale or pay the four bucks for them. I actually haven't had it for a while because I tried cutting out food with carageenan, which did help with gas and cramps. But I recently bought some Soy Dream and if I have it in smaller portions I'm fine. Everything in moderation I guess. I think I was just overdoing with all the dairy alternatives (cheese, milk, ice cream) that contained carageenan.

I paid $3.69 for one container, plus lovely NYC tax (over 8%). I don't mind though, if it tastes that good! I also ordered some soy mozzeralla and soy blue cheese, so we'll see how those taste!
