Hi all!
I went in for a follow up visit with my primary Dr. today. He said that he would have never given me Clyndamycin being that I suffer from IBS as it is hard on the gut. When my dog bit me back in January I had to go to Urgent Care and since I had problems with Amoxicillin, they gave me Cipro and Clydamycin. It was about a week or less that I had a severe IBS attack and was taken by ambulance to the hospital. My Dr. said if he has anything to say about it, he would have only given me the Cipro. Just an FYI for some of you who like me might not have known about Clyndamycin being so hard on the stomach. For what it's worth, I hope it has been up some help to anyone on the board. Heidi

Thanks for the heads up. Are you taking a probiotic?...they can be very useful in recovering from taking antibiotics.

The antibiotics were taken back in January from a dog bite. I'm not really sure what Probiotics are and how they interact with other medications and herbs. Can you share with me?
Thank you. Heidi

That explains some of the confusion! Probiotics are just the "friendly" bacteria that we all need to have in our gut. Most people have good levels anyway, but extra can be helpful, especially with IBS. Also, antibiotics wipe these bacteria out along with the bad bacteria! Not good. So it's sensible for anyone who takes an antibiotic to take a probiotic at least for a while after they've finished the course, and with ISB it's even more important to replenish the little blighters asap! They don't interact with other medications or herbs in any way as far as I know.

I'm totally in the dark about Probiotics as I've just started hearing about how good they are. Where do you buy them and how do you know which kind to buy? Heidi

HFS. Some only contain one type of bacteria and some contain different types, so I think the latter is best. As long as it's a reputable brand then it should be fine.

...if you go to a good HFS and ask for help, you should get some good advice. Most staff in good HFSs love to help!

...at least, the different types don't cater for different IBS symptoms.

do different things for the body. For example R. Casei is best for diarrhea and L. Plantarium is best for pain. So I need one that contains something for constipation. I found this info in the Research Library.
And I read that probiotic Culturelle is proven effective for diarrhea so it might not be the best choice for someone with constipation.
I was hoping someone could offer a brand that contained a strain that was helpful for constipation.

Since I don't know anything about Probiotics, if I walk into that HFS again they will sell me anything to make a sale. I don't know a lot about these things. I'm just getting into the enzymes which is new for me. Your help is much appreciated. Heidi

I don't know any US brands, but go into a good HFS and have a look in the chiller cabinet. Read labels. I'd go for one with a good mix of bacteria.

I have never gone to Whole Foods and had someone try to make a sale with me! In fact....they often encourage me NOT to buy something I've read about if it won't help me get better!
That being said...Beth I would go to Whole foods and ask them.
Let me know what you find out *hugs* Feel good!

The folks at my Whole Foods aren't too knowledgable! I seem to know more than them on certain products, and that's not much!
And my Wild Oats is even worse. These folks have often recommended products that I know are bad for me and IBS! Do I need to take a trip to Arizona's Whole Foods to get help!
Guess it depends on the store! Thanks for the suggestion though.

Heidi, Thank you for posting that! I took Clyndamycin for an infection by my fingernail a couple of months ago. I was on it for 12 days, because the infection was stubborn. I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out what caused my IBS to get so much worse lately, and I bet that's it! I think that would indicate that I need probiotics badly, because I know that all antibiotics kill the good bacteria in our intestines as well as the bad ones throughout the body. This gives me a clue what to do. Thanks again, Carol

Here's an article on probiotics and IBS-C. And another.
There was nothing in the Research Library here to suggest that particular strains of probiotics are better than others in treating particular symptoms. I would also suggest that any studies that do say so probably haven't got IBS patients on this diet, so a proiotic that helps with the digestion of dairy for example could help relieve someone's symptoms that are caused by dairy.

Hi, This is a great thread with lots of info on probiotics: "Probiotics Survey-even if you don't take one!"
I found it with a search for "probiotic survey".
Hope it helps, Myra

Is Natrol BioBeads. They not only have a good mix of all the good stuff - but they have none of the bad stuff (many of them have milk products in them which are bad for us) -- also they have a good rep for actually having all the live bacteria they are supposed to -- and they are specially coated to keep them alive so that your stomach acids don't kill them. That's why you don't need quite so many. They also don't need to be kept in the fridge -- so they travel well.
Vitacost.com carries them for 6.39 for 30 pills (you take 1 per day).

I'm looking for answers and had no clue that something I posted might have tipped someone off about Clyndamycin maybe being the cause of a problem.
Take care. Heidi
