My biggest problem after every meal (even snacking in between) is the gas and bloating all the time - how uncomfortable - Gas-X does not help. I am on effexor and I try to take digestive enzymes often - but nothing seems to help! HELP!!!

Are you on a SFS? And have you tried fennel tea? It's even better than peppermint for gas and bloating.

Thanks for responding. I seem to have no luck with any SFS however I do drink a lot of peppermint as well as fennel tea after I eat. Should I drink it while I eat to maybe relieve some pressure.

Why do you not like SFSs? They're so useful it's a shame when someone can't tolerate them.

Drinking whilst eating is NOT recommended...you can take more air in this way which doean't help. Make sure to alwyas eat small meals, take small mouthfuls and chew them thoroughly and slowly. Alot of people miss this very important advice...it's amazing what a difference just that can make.

I started out with one before every meal, then I started to get reflux and indigestion, so I stopped them for a couple of days, now I'm back on one a day, and seeing how that helps. The caps definitely stopped my cramping and subsequently stopped my gas. I usually get that just before lunch, so I would take a cap literally just before I put any food in my mouth with a small amount of water. But keep an eye on it as I say, after a while I started to get reflux - bleh, didn't like that!

Well Acacia is the best for fewer gassy side-effects, but you said you didn't like it...without saying why.

After doing a lot of research on bloating I can say that there is no cure for bloating as doctors don't even understand it. There are NO meds that are proven effective for bloating in the intestines, including charcoal and gas-x. Also bloating is not always caused exclusively by gas. The thing with bloating is that it is due to the intestines behaving badly and it causes the normal amounts of gas to clump up and be bothersome and it also makes the intestines feel like they are twisted and spasming. The only really effective way to stop bloating is to keep the intestines behaving as happily as possible. This is helped by keeping them actively happy with soluble fiber and avoiding triggers. Staying regular is important and of course the points Linz mentioned about careful swallowing and eating slowly and often help a lot. Fennel tea is wonderful too and is great to sip* during a meal and afterward. Also walking after a meal and avoiding sitting too much are very important. Despite all of this I find my IBS has a mind of its own and little things will still start my gut off so that it will want to bloat after dinner for a few days or weeks and then it is fine for a spell. But fennel tea is my main ally.

Hi
I read your posting with great interest. I am new to this forum and have suffered in silence for years hoping it will go away. My biggest problem at the moment is sleepless nights-for some unknown reason my gut ties itself up just when I want to go to sleep and often can keep me awake for hours mainly because of the discomfort which also gives me backache. I lie in bed thinking dark thoughts and trying to relax. My husband is very caring but even he finds a flatulent weepy wife a bit much! I get terribly anxious because nobody else that I know understands what I go through. Who wants to discuss painful constipation! Fennel tea has also been a godsend but I find that peppermint caps work in the short term but my bad gut seems to get used to everything I try. I have also been for hynotherapy-did not work as the person became irritated that my condition didnt improve despite her best efforts. I hope I am using this message board correctly. Any ideas jout there?

I also get bloated in the night. I used to spend nights watching TV trying to get rid of the bloat (I just was remarking on that last night to my husband). I found back then that if I got down on my hands and knees and then put my head and shoulders to the ground but left my butt in the air I could sometimes get things moving enough to go back to sleep. I still get bloated in spells, but after starting Heather's diet and following it correctly I no longer have to lay awake at night with my butt in the air. The bloating in the night doesn't bother my sleep anymore. So good luck!

I have also had recurring gas/painful bloating problems. It's so embarressing!!! How do you explain to other people I'm sorry I have to go home my gas pains are so bad I feel like I have a knife in my tummy. The pains only happen when I am unable to release the built up gas due to social situations. I try letting it all out in the bathroom but my stomach only wants to release gas when I'm in public! Ugh! I'm back on peppermint tea on a regular basis and try to avoid much eating in certain situations. The fennel is not my favorite flavor but I feel like I need to brew some up.

I'm glad to know at least I'm not the only one out there with my bum in the air praying for some relief!
