Hi all, I know that we're not meant to drink alcohol, but the odd glass of red wine goes down so well! I was wondering if anyone knows whether wine has a high yeast content? I have just found out I am yeast intolerant so am meant to avoid all foods with yeast in them. But hate the thought of forgoing a much enjoyed glass of red.
I've had candida for quite some time, which causes bloating, so could be part of my problem.
Also does anyone know of good yeast substitutes for baking bread?
Thank you

sourdough starters or I also have a recipe for biscuits that rises naturally- no yeast to it.. just flour and water you let go... its posted here as monticello biscuits I believe- if not let me know and I'll post it from home.

Hey, I avoid yeast also, and I have used dough enhancer which may have a *tiny* amount of yeast, but I usually buy yeast-free breads from Pacific Bakery or French Meadow Bakery at Whole Foods. I have no idea if you can get those in Australia, sorry, but they are really great! Just wanted to let you know that I am in the same boat as you, and it's hard to avoid because almost ALL commercial breads have yeast! Good luck

what kind of bread do you buy? Is it yeast free and gluten free? I didn't think you did wheat. Does this company make a GF yeast free bread? That would be awesome!

I generally make my own gluten free bread, which uses baking powder (bicarb & cream of tartar) to help the bread to rise. I can also buy whupper bread, which is yeast free & wheat free rye bread. But I did hear there was a subsitute yeast, which sounds like your dough enhancer. Sometimes you just can't beat the texture of a loaf made with yeast. Sigh... if its not one thing its another! Good to hear I'm not the only one tho! Thanx for your reply

Unfortunately, the breads I buy do have gluten. They are made with spelt or kamut, so it's an alternative to wheat but I think they're in the same family. I know that Ener-G Foods makes a rice bread but it has yeast, if that matters, so I don't buy it. There's another brand that I always see at the store that's gluten free, and I can't think of the brand name right now...if I see it again, I'll try to post it. Maybe you could try doing a search for it...hope that helps!
