Any research on which personality types tend to get IBS? Especially introvert/extrovert?

Many times, people think of introverts as shy, quiet people. I am not at all. Not shy, not quiet. BUT, I AM an introvert. If I have a day off, I want to spend it by myself, doing something quiet. I stay up way too late because that is the only time I have alone, and suddenly, I have more energy than I have had all day!

And then, I am a fifth grade teacher (been teaching for 15 years.) I think this is a huge contributor of the continuation of my IBS. I am in a perpetual state of stress because I never get down time. I feel my tummy tighten as soon as the bell rings for the kids to come. I LOVE the kids, love teaching them, but emotionally, it takes its toll. I honestly cannot close my eyes for ten seconds without a kid taking advantage. If I am not on the kids constantly, they will either begin to goof off or will stop working. I mean, I have to prompt several kids just to get the pencils in their hands!

Just wondering how many of you out there are INTROVERTS?
And, I am also open to any suggestions on how to lower my stress level at work.

I am an introvert. I am alot more outgoing and outspoken than I used to be but I do enjoy my time at home and alone time.
As far as stress at work I know closing your eyes and taking a moment might be the best thing for you but have you tried relaxational breathing. I haven't really read up on it or anything but in any stressful situation I have taught myself to breath deeply in and out. The kids might not even notice this?

There are articles on the research board I believe that talk about personality type in relation to IBS.

I am very outgoing when I am around people I'm comfortable with...... but overall I"m also an introvert. I'd more often rather be alone and relax at home than be out in the rat race. But I think a lot of that has to do with the IBS...... I usually want to be alone cuz I feel so lousy it's just easier. Plus it's so not stressful tojust relax at home and not need to put on clothes!

I'm also an introvert, although I'm not necessarily shy either. This is a very interesting question... I'll have to check out that article.

As for stress at work, I completely understand. I'm a high school resource room teacher and I know how crazy teaching can be. You're right, you can't look away when there are kids in the room! I have one question for you, though... have you tried the hypnosis CDs yet? Because doing the hypno program helped me deal with all sorts of stress in my life, not just IBS-related stress. I felt like it calmed me down and helped me be more relaxed about everything. Also, yoga does the same thing for me. Just some thoughts!

I'm an extrovert all the way. My mother said I started flirting at the age of 4! I knew some thing was wrong (before I was tested for what seemed like everything and was diagnosed with IBS) when I didn't want to do ANYTHING with ANYONE anymore. It took complete control of my life. I didn't do anything except go to work, barely make it through the day, come home and be on the couch the rest of the night. NO social life for someone that was quite social. It was actually to the point that I thought that if my life was going to be this way, I didn't think I wanted to live it (I was NOT suicidal, just frustrated). At that point, I did something about it and went to my first doctor. He, of course, brushed me off telling me to take some medicine when I felt the "pain" coming on. Whatever. I cried for 2 days out b/c I was so mad. I found another doctor that I really like. Even though my doctor has spent a lot of time with me, I've gotten the best results from this website so far. I love it!

I'm also a teacher. I teach Middle School Health and PE....people told me I would HATE the middle school age, but I love them, and love my job. Plus, I've talked about IBS in my Health classroom so maybe more people will have respect for the disease (I have a student who was recently diagnosed with it). Plus, I teach 4 PE classes a day so I'm always up moving, with I think is beneficial for me AND my IBS.

Wow, long post. I must have gotten into a flow!

I guess I'm a bit of both. I have a real outgoing side, but then there's the part of me, like you guys, who finds it better to be in and suffering on your own than out and getting worked up about it! So Intro and Extro for me!!

Hi y'all! Fantastic post!

I LOVE meeting new people. But if I don't get my alone time...watch out! Sometimes I'm guilty of not returning people's calls just so I can read a book or whatever But...if I'm at home too much I miss everyone LOL I guess I'm a combo?

I taught kindergarten. I didn't have a half a second to relax with those kids! Drawing on the floor, fights, I want THIS toy, LOL It was a BLAST...but a lot of work!

To de-stress I would go home and take a nap! LOL I wish I had some better ideas....maybe someone else will!

Love,
Ruchie

Hi Dee!

You mention that you find being up and moving helps your IBS. Would you elaborate on that? Are you IBS C or D? Are you following the diet? Just curious if you think it's a combo of the diet and exercise that helps, or mostly the exercise? Whatever it is--it's great that you're so positive and that you have your life back!

*hugs*

Hey, sorry to butt in but I just wanted to say that exercise helped my IBS soooo much! When I had lots of time in the summer I started exercising really intsively (weight training + cardio) and my IBS has NEVER been better (I'm IBS-D). Unfortunately now that I'm back at school my schedule doesn't allow for that much exercise, but now I know what can help!

Also, this is a great thread... I'mm definitely an introvert [INTP]. While I do like being with people, meeting new people etc. I would freak out if I didn't have alone time every day! I wonder what the connection is between IBS and introverts? (Or maybe its a cause thing - IBS makes you introverted? Who knows!)

Cheers, Laurel.

Yeah, I just got the hypnosis tape and am at day 27. The first one was great. It truly is relaxing. The second one stressed me. I think it is because I am having a hard time seeing any link between what he is saying and what is happening in my body. After 27 days, I am really not any better. But, on to tape 3. It's not over yet!

Hi Laurel,

What is INTP? Is that a specific kind of introvert?

Good to know about the exercise. I have fibro...I used to run and dance and I was pretty fit. Nowadays I'm getting more than a block in and I'm thrilled (walking). But htis is truly inspiring me to keep working at it! I believe I will run again one day (the pain specialist said she doesn't tell most patients this...but she thinks I will too one day!) So thanks for the encouragement!

*hugs*

May I chime in and answer this? "INTP" comes from the Meyers-Briggs &/or Kiersey Personality Sorters, which are in turn influenced by Carl Jung's work regarding personality typology:
According to Jung's typology all people can be classified using three criteria.
These criteria are:
Extroversion - Introversion
Sensing - Intuition
Thinking - Feeling
Judging - Perceiving (this fourth pair added by Myers- Briggs)
The first criterion defines the source and direction of energy expression for a person. The extrovert has a source and direction of energy expression mainly in the external world while the introvert has a source of energy mainly in the internal world.
The second criterion defines the method of information perception by a person. Sensing means that a person believes mainly information he receives directly from the external world. Intuition means that a person believes mainly information he receives from the internal or imaginative world.
The third criterion defines how the person processes information. Thinking means that a person makes a decision mainly through logic. Feeling means that, as a rule, he makes a decision based on emotion.
The fourth criterion defines how a person implements the information he has processed. Judging means that a person organizes all his life events and acts strictly according to his plans. Perceiving means that he is inclined to improvise and seek alternatives.
The different combinations of the criteria determine a type. There may be sixteen types. Every type has a name (or formula) according to the combination of criteria. For example: INTP= Introvert Intuitive Thinking Perceiving.
(Me, I'm a classic INFJ, not to mention an Enneagram 5)
