hi everyone,

i'm new to this site and to heather's advice on IBS, and was wondering about yeast infections. over the weekend, i started using heather's recipes, and also applying stick-on heated pads (marketed for menstral cramps; just discovered these, and they are EXCELLENT!) after a few days, i woke up with the beginnings of a yeast infection. i have found previous threads about this, saying it's not unusual, and recommending soy-based yoghurts, supplements and medications. are there other natural foods which have the same good bacteria? i live in hong kong, where people don't eat a lot of dairy products, and so, a soy-based yoghurt substitute is probably going to be impossible to find. what i love about heather's recipes are that the ingredients are not too exotic. i live on an outlying island without a normal grocery store, and was able to make the tuna casserole from the news letter without having to go into the city and search in the specialty shops. soy and tofu are easy to find here, so i could probably make my own, if any one can recommend a recipe. if there aren't other foods, i will try some of the other recommendations, no problem.

also, just want to make a comment about Heather's cook book and advice for breakfasts. i've had nasty stomach aches since i was about 8 years old, and never knew what triggered them, other than my belt being too tight, or something. so a big thank you, Heather, for telling me what i can eat in the mornings!!! and explaining why the foods i thought would help me with constipation (high fiber cereals, vegetables) were actually stomach upsetters. over christmas, i discovered that after all these years, my sister has stomach problems too. i never knew it. she said the Suzanne Somers diet plan took away the stomach aches for her. so, i bought one of the Somers' cookbooks, and the montignac, thinking that food combining was the answer. well, i'm not sure yet, but after reading everything on this site, and looking at heather's recipes (and trying a few), i have this very strong suspicion that their food combining theories are totally NOT going to work for me. that they will, in fact, totally aggregate it. so, just wanted to warn people about that, and to say thank you.

sorry this is soooo long winded!!! really really sorry. thanks for reading this far down. :-)

katie

Have you tried pro-biotics? You can get them at health food stores but be sure to buy the refridgerated ones so the cultures are live! I also use the therma care heat packs on my tummy and use the heating pad at home almost everyday. Personally, I've only ever had one yeast infection and that was years ago but they can be caused from excess heat and moisture. Try using little panty shields and changing them often through out the day when using the heat packs if yeast infections continue to be an issue.

hi michele,

thanks for replying! no, i don't even know what pro-biotics are, but i'll give it a try. also, noticed that the fiber supplement Heather sells includes "pre-biotics", and after an internet search, i noticed they might do the same thing. anyway, i'll look into it more. thanks for your advice.

Probiotics are the good bacteria you need in your gut. Prebiotics encourage these, but don't supply them.

Good luck.
