Before I was diagnosed with IBS and subsequently given medicine to help treat my nausea and diarrhea, I often felt so sick that I lost my appetite and didnt want to eat. I was in fear (rightfully so) that anything I would eat wouldn't stay in me, and thus I avoided many foods. Now that I am doing somewhat better, I want to try to gain weight (about 10-15 pounds) to return to my normal size. Right now I'm at the low end of healthy weight for my height, so I'm not totally in dire straights, but I'd like for my pants to fit again!! Unfortunately (or fortunately) I'm not a very adventurous eater and thus do not like a wide variety of foods. One of the big points of the IBS diet is to avoid fats, so what should I do to put on some pounds???

I hear you! When my IBS first started, I lost 20 pounds VERY quickly. I dropped to below 100 pounds and I felt nauseous all the time (I'm very petite 5 foot 1). The only time I didn't feel sick was when I was hungry. What I did was focus on feeling better - not the weight. Heather just reminded me yesterday that ginger tea is amazing for nausea, but I find peppermint tea just as helpful. I was always afraid, "What is this going to do to me?" everytime I tried to eat something. Talk about an appetite supressor. I started slowly and cautiously adding back insoluble fiber into my diet (by that time I was down to potatoes and bread and chicken). It took some trial and error, but eventually, as my symptoms eased I was able to gain back some of the weight I lost. Maybe you will gain the weight back, maybe not. I wouldn't try to add fat or other "weight gainers" to your diet. They'll likely cause an attack, and it will ruin your appetite again and make you feel worse. Focus on your health, and maybe the weight will take care of itself. It did for me. Take care of yourself and go treat yourself to some tea.

EAT LOTS OF CARBS, try plain bagels, baked potatos, pastas, and also I had a lot of luck with BOOST. When drinking the boost, start off slowly with the amount you drink, b/c it is pretty concentrated. Now that I have gained my weight back (and then some) it really hard for me to cut down on the carb, since that was all I was able to eat for a long time. And I tend to want to stick only to carbs b/c I know it is a safe food to eat 99% of the time.
