Can probiotics cause gas?

I bought a new brand of Probiotics yesterday (the one I was taking was ghastly expensive) Called Jarro-Dophilus +FOS. The bottle proclaims High Potentcy 6 species survives stomach acid and colonizes the intestines. FOS are natural carbohydrates that enhace replication of benificial bacteria. Should I be worried about taking it. Somehow the idea of microorganisms colonizing my intestines freak me out.

I was using that brand & didn't have any problems with gas (at least not more than I ususally do!). I'm currently taking PB8 since it was recommended by someone here on the boards & the vitamin store told me it was more potent. The only problem I had with the Jarros was that it had to be refrigerated so I couldn't keep it in my bag. As a result, I kept forgetting to take it.
I still don't know if the probiotics even do anything for me but I guess they can't hurt.
good luck with them.

Re microorganisms colonizing your intenstines...that's what probiotics do!!! You need the good bacteria down there and probtiotics supply more. I guess the FOS is a prebiotic like Acacia is.

Not sure on the gas, but any change can cause more symptoms for a little while so it could be that.

PB 8 makes a variety of versions (I think 3). Do you know if the bottle says it has FOS in it? Is is the Vegetarian version? I know SweetD recommended this brand but she is on her honeymoon, so can't ask her which version to take.

Can anyone else recommend a probiotic that has helped and not increase the gas or bloat?

I currently take Jarro EPS but still have major gas.

I take Acidophilus Plus with Live bacteria. It's six bucks (including tax). i get it at my local grocery store.

I did have some gas when I started taking it and some very erratic D. I have been taking it for over a year now no gas, no erratic D just smooth (solid) bms.

It works great for me and the gas and D did not last over a few days. I guess my body was adjusting to something new being put into it.

Good luck.

PS I wote you a message under Questions on Acacia!! In case you have time to answer. Thanks

are you going to try? I thought FOS was suppose to be bad. Have you heard differently. I am also looking for a probiotic, but am leery of FOS in some of the brand. I think PB8 has it in it.

Heather warns against this ingredient. She says to be careful with it as it may cause gas and bloat, like inulin.

I live in San Francisco, so the majority of food stores here are Safeway. I buy their brand, Safeway Select Acidophilus Plus. It has a half billion live cells per capsule and I take 2 capsules a day. One in the morning and the other before I go to bed at night. It is really great and works for me.

Darn, we don't have a Safeway in Illinois! Maybe Jewel is the same thing. For some reason I think they are owned by the same company. Thanks anyways. Looks for the search for a probiotic continues!

Lucky, you live in SF!!!!The home of SF(Soluble Fiber)!

Try a Walgreens pharmacy, they are cheaper than the HFS. Make sure you get Acidolphilus Plus, its the best.

But I was reading the bottle of the stuff I was taking and it has FOS in it and I've been fine. Still I think If I'm upping to twice a day I think the second pill will be a different brand.

So what brand are you going to take? The jarro with the FOS? Or two brands at once? I hope you saw my post about Heathers comment on FOS, but I do no that for some people it just doesn't bother them. So if it works for you, then that's all that counts!!!

Just read your response on the probiotic thread. What do the gals at Wild Oats recommend? I know PB8 has FOS in it, I think.

I am taking a probiotic called Florify. I am happy with it and do not paln to give it up. But I want to take probiotics twice a day and Florify costs alot so I was thinking about taking another brand to use for my second dose.
The woman at Wild Oats actually recommended the Jaro with FOS so I think she really didn't understant what IBS was all about. But she did clue me into the fact that birth controll pills can kill off probiotics. I was taking my Florfiy and birth control pill right after breakfast.
OK so the end of the stroy is that I am taking the ortho tri cyclin after breakfast
The Florify after luch
and I haven't decided yet about the extra dose of probiotics but I'm definatley NOT going totake a second dose of probiotics with FOS in it.
Well that was a mouthful I hope I didn't bore you.

Does Florify have FOS in it too?
As far as the Wild Oats people, they mean well and are very friendly, but as you say, not specialized in IBS. They give advice for the general public. When I told them I was looking for fiber supplement for IBS they told me to take psyllium fiber and to eat lots of whole wheat cereal and breads and lot of fruits and veggies!! Yikes, that would kill me. But for the general public that is very healthy.

I went back to Wild Oats today and returned the Jarro with FOS, expained my probelm and they reffered me to a sales lady who did know what IBS was all about. She reccomended PB 8. But be carefull there are two kinds and one has FOS in it. She also gave me some free samples to try it out before I open the bottle. The florify apparently does have FOS in it, but as of yet has not bothered me. I think the FOS is what helps the upper digestive tract and since I'm prone to ulcers (I've had two flare ups in the past)it is bennificial for me. But not twice a day. Do yuo take probiotics? What kind? Have a good weekend.
