i have a desk job and am at my desk for about 90% of my work day, and normally do ok for the 1st part of the day. once i eat lunch though, get a little gassy, most days not a huge issue, but don't want to keep running to the ladies room...does anyone else have this problem and can offer some solutions? i know if i decide to "hold" in the gas i will pay for it later

I suffer from gas too and I don't much know what else to suggest but I definately wouldn't recommend holding it in. That will definately lead to more pain.

Maybe try to let some pass when there isn't someone right near you or as your walking to the copy machine or something. Anywhere that;s not directly under someone's nose?

Two no maybe 3 suggestions:
Can you walk abit right after eating? That can often stave off gas and help digestion.
Make sure there's nothing in your lunch that is a major gas producer (watch things like onions, beans, etc.)
Drink some herbal tea - I would recommend peppermint to keep everything settled after your meal. Sip on it through the afternoon.

I'm not sure this would be practical at work...If you strike a match right after you pass gas there is some sort of chemical reaction that takes the stink out!!! I know that sounds weird but my DR actually told me that and it does work. Your co-workers might think your a little wierd going around striking matches all day

what about gas-x. I used to use it all the time. I would chew a couple of tablets. They seemed to help. Also yes if you could take a little walk after lunch!

I read on here to try a Phazyme before each meal. I've tried Gax-X and it doesn't do much for me. It doesn't work on intestinal gas. And many people misunderstand what Gas-X does (and maybe Phazyme does this too). It takes small gas bubbles and air pockets and turns them into one large air pocket to make gas easier to pass.

I was taking Gas-X like crazy until I realized that I was spending $6 a package and not getting much relief. That's more than a pack of smokes, and now that I've QUIT! I'm not about to spend that cig money elsewhere with no benefit.

I got the suggestion of chewing fennel seeds (after meals) off another IBS Web site, and tried that with some success. I chew a small palmful of seeds until they are basically much, then spit out the wad. Weird taste, but you get used to it.

HTH!!

Good Morning!

I am so glad to find a post with a situation I endure every single day. Right now, it is almost lunchtime, and I dread the idea of the afternoon, for that is when the gas hits me!
Have tried drinking peppermint tea which helps a bit. There are times like yesterday, when I had to let loose, the pain of the gas was too much. Getting home is just as difficult sometimes, for I keep looking behind me to see if anyone is too close. Thank God for those days when I feel almost normal.

I do tech support and have been told I could have IBS. I got a letter from the doctor stating so. I was sent to a specialist and only now after two years are they pushing for me to have a colonoscopy. I am going back to college, which I'm attending online, the way I run to the bathroom I truly do not need to be in a classroom! I know the pain and embarrassment of running to the ladies room non-stop and the stinging remarks you can get from your co-workers. Just find something else to focus on at work, think of your religion or of a beautiful meadow Peaceful stuff, it will help a lot trust me!

Thank you all so much for your suggestions. I am just going to have to try and work in a small walk after eating, since this is the only thing I haven't really been able to do to try and solve this situation. It does help to read through these posts and realize I am not alone! Thank you again!

People have come up with some great suggestions. I find fennel tea helps a lot! I also find that if I eat something mid morning, less gas builds up at lunchtime and I don't have a problem. If I can't eat between breakfast and lunch, I do have more of a problem. I also have to say that the hypnosis CDs have helped a lot with all aspects of IBS (and gas was my #1 problem). But the eating a few crackers mid morning helps the most. Good luck with it - I know its miserable at times.
