I am passing 6 weeks of trouble with IBS after being fine for weeks this summer. My diet is great (I could add more cooked insolubles veggies and fruits) and I exercise and drink tea and everything right. I have before this thought it was stress because of my sister's stupidity and shotgun wedding and now that stopped bothering me and maybe I would have come around when I got hit with more and worse family stress. Sunday it all hit and I felt ok that day and yesterday I was average (actually was pooping like normal again) but today I am in MAJOR pain and had to go home from work. It hurts so much that I can't nap and I just have to keep my mind off of it. Pain like this is something I really havent had much of unless it was pain and discomfort from bloating which this isn't. I made some strong tea and I think I am going to get digestive enzymes and make a dr. appt to talk about meds. I was on levbid and bentyl years ago but it didn't do much, now though I guess my symptoms have changed. Any advice on what I should do? (btw the family problems are not in my home- DH and I get along very well)

I'm sorry your under so much stress right now! My IBS is mostly stress related and I also suffer from SEVERE pain at times. I have also tried the Bentyl and levsin and they didn't help me too much either. Just recently my dr tried my on donnatal, its got the anti-spamsm thing in it but also has a little phenobarbal in it to help keep everything calm.

You already are doing all the right things, exercise, eating properly etc, maybe its time to ask about an anti-depressant. I'm sure you have seen the recent post about which SSRI's have helped who, maybe they would help you as well.

The only other things I have found to help with the pain is the heating pad and Vicodin. I hope you start to feel better soon!

Thanks! I think I should bring a list of drug alternatives to the doc so we don't miss anything. I am just going to my regular doc and not my GI.
Right now I am trying to figure out what to eat. I don't think I have had pain like this before.

Actually, I prefer seeing my regular dr over the GI people. The GI drs I have been to and there have been a LOT of them over the years, seem to busy to actually help and treat someone who "just has IBS." I think a list of the meds is a great idea!!

As far as what to eat, that depends on if your C or D right now! I'm usually C so have to be careful not to do too much bread and rice without insolubles or it gets worse. I find oatmeal and toast to be good for unhappy tummies. Try eating very small meals every couple of hours. Too much food in there at once can be bad when things are like this. But you also don't want to get too empty either! Graham crackers and pretzels are good snackies.

I know cool whip is a no-no. Sunday I had a little lite cool whip with my berry angel food cake, then I had more last night and today after I felt better I had some with cake again. It is so yummy. But I know it is bad with the HFCS and all the chemicals. Has anyone had bad results with it or not been bothered at all? I had a brief pain/cramping again after I ate it even though I was doing better. I occasionally have a little HFCS and don't worry about it but I am suspecting the cool whip now.

I am having major pain again right now in fact I woke up from it. It started yesterday about 9 while I was working and then I got it to go away after a lot of tea. It came back but milder in the afternoon and I had it last night but not as bad. When I went to bed it was there but not as acute. I woke up at 4 to pee and it hit really bad! I am contemplating going to the doc. I had tea (it is my last cupful but I have peppermint outside) and a heating pad and now I am not wincing and doubled over so bad. The pain is in my uppper abdomen right in the middle where your ribs separate. I don't seem gassy and I haven't had C for awhile. So I am surviving right now but will probably go to the doctor when it comes back. As for work- I don't think so.

Sorry you are having so much pain. The only things I can think of with the pain where yours is would be ulcers, heartburn or trapped gas. Have you tried an antacid or gas pill? Also, I would suggest the safe diet for now and keep a record of everything you eat.

I'm think it's a good idea to see the doc and get this resolved.

Hope you feel better soon.

I am sorry your having so much trouble right now! HUGS
If this isn't your normal IBS pain I would call the doctor for sure. Try and get some rest today. Or work on your book cause I can't wait to read it!!!
Good Luck

Have you had your gall bladder checked?? The pain you are describeing, up high where the ribs seperate is where I would get pain from my gallbladder. If you have stones they can be very painful to pass!

Hi Tamara!

I'm so sorry about your pain! I'm wondering if you've been checked for ovarian cysts?? I had one that was 6cm a few years back, and it killed to go to the bathroom, to the point that I was doubled over in pain and couldn't move out of a fetal position. Just a thought!

Hope you get to the bottom of this...SOON! You poor thing!

I am off to urgent care now. The kicking type pains are lessened in the afternoon but now I am all bloated. Anyway gosh I hope it isn't gall bladder! I drank so much peppermint tea today! It is the only thing that helps me. Well we will see what the good for nothing urgent care doctors have to say.

I have been on the IBS diet for over a year now and doing great, I even cheat sometimes with really bad things such as coconut creme pie with real whipped cream. However, cool whip, I can absolutely not do. My mom made me a strawberry shortcake using angel food cake, strawberries, and she used cool whip because she knew I don't do dairy. Anyway, I was sooooo sick the next day. At first I blamed it on the strawberries, but they are usually okay, so I tried just angel food cake with cool whip, as a test and had bad results. So cool whip is bad.

Urgent care doesn't do abdominal stuff. My xrays told the story- lots of stool and gas! My gas was more north than normal and I think since I have finally had normal BMs since Monday that everything was shifting. But my body seems to like to hold on to stuff and it just sits in there. Recommended enema or MoM. Had the panoply of tests (not pregnant! ) and next Friday I go to my normal doc and we'll talk about drug options. I haven't had the kicking cramps since earlier in the day so I hope they don't come back. Well I am just glad it wasn't gallstones or ulcer etc. Thanks for the support!

Well, I'm so glad it wasn't anything serious!!! I've had the "backed up stool" problem before. The only thing I can suggest, is to do a colonoscopy prep. It sucks doing it, but it works! You can go to any drug store. The Fleet Phospho Soda is the most tolerable. Good luck!!!!!

Maybe Barbie's right, in which case, the peppermint could be bad! Try strong chamomile instead. But go to the doctor too - this sounds horrible.
