Well everyone!
I went to see my doctor and although she was helpful, she didnt fully help my parents to understand IBS. But before I go into it, let me say that it didnt start out easy! Because the whole time in the waiting room, my dad kept on bringing up the subject of weight, and that REALLY annoyed me!!! Anywho...
After I told my doc what was going on, she told me that shes nearly confident that its IBS, but she wants to give me a colonoscopy just to rule out IBD. When I asked her what foods to stay away from, she said just fried foods. I mentioned insoluble fiber to her, and she said that as long as i eat soluble fiber, i should have no problems with insoluble fiber at all!(dont know how true that is) Anyway, the good part is she told me to start taking Benefiber. She gave me like a million sample packets and signed me up for a colonscopy sometime in June/July. When me and my parents got home, my mom looked at me and was like "So you cant have fried foods?" I then whipped out a couple of pages i printed from heathers website. I gave her the explantion of ibs and the foods to stay away from list. She kindof gave them a weird look and I think she thinks that if my doctor didnt say to stay away from these things, then i dont have to worry about them. Anyhow, she also told me to keep on taking my prevacid and Levsin. She explained that she cant take any other steps of trial for the meds until i get the colonoscopy done. Oh, wait, speaking of the colonoscopy, she said that instead of going on a one day liquid diet and taking the fleet soda, that I will be going on a 2 day liquid diet and taking a mild pill laxative, thats all, no yucky liquid stuff! WHys that? Is it because Im only 17? Oh and about the Benefiber, does anybody know if I can take it on an empty stomach (before meals?) Thanks All!

Angela,

I take benefiber on an empty stomach all the time. You can put it in just about any thing including water and not taste it at all. Hope the colonoscopy goes well!

I'm so happy for you! It seems some doors are (slowly, but surely) opening up to "Eating for IBS" for you! Doctors orders for no more fried foods & benefiber!

Did your doctor say anything about your weight? When are you having your colonoscopy?

How have you been feeling anyway? Hope it's good!

Mags, she seemed concerned about my weight but not too much, because I gained 15 pounds since February! I took my first tsp of benefiber with my dinner. I sure hope it helps! I think I will take one tsp with breakfast and dinner for like 3 days, and then i'll start to gradually increase

Angela,
It's good to see that some good did come of your Doctor's visit even if it wasn't quite as good as you'd hoped.

I use Benefiber and it's absolutely fine on an empty stomach. Its 100% Guar Gum whcich is a soluble fiber so it's completely safe. In fact I always take it before breakfast and dinner to make sure that I have a good SF base in my tummy before I eat.

Hi ConcreteAngel
It sounds like things are picking up for you and that your parents might come around, hopefully they'll be more understanding. You are so lucky that you don't have to drink the fleet soda it Truly is the most Awful thing I have ever tasted I almost threw up the last time I took it. I go see the Specialist on Tuesday the 3rd and I'm not sure what tests he will send me for, but I sure hope I dont' have to drink that stuff.
Take Care

Hope things continue to go well for you and the colonoscopy shows something for all your misery.
As for your parents keep informing them about IBS. Being a parent myself I'd be really concerned - no scared if one of my children were underweight. Just keep doing what you are doing and keep your chin up. I am glad you feel comfotable letting strangers into your life.

Angela,

Glad to hear you had at least some positive results from the doctor. The colonoscopy should be no problem for you - you might ask your pharmacist about the mild pill laxative versus the phosho-soda drink. Most pharmacists are willing to share "information". Maybe it's a new technique that they're finding is just as effective as the older way. As for your parents and the food issue, have you considered keeping a diary / log / calendar of your diet and any attacks? Maybe if you could "show" your parents something concrete (no pun intended!), they'd be more supportive. Keep sharing the "written" stuff from Heather - that's a great idea. It can help keep the emotions out of the situation! But try not to get too wrapped up in their approval or support - just keep quietly, respectfully doing what you need to do for your health, and hopefully they'll see the results in time. God bless you!

Blessings,
Kaybee C
