Really dumb question about bakeware...

I feel silly even posting this, but as much as I know about cooking, I'm a complete dummy when it comes to cookware and bakeware.
I have some aluminum baking pans that are discoloring - heavily marked with dark gray, almost black, splotches. They weren't the result of anything being burned on the pan. I'm assuming this is relatively common, but what causes it? It's not harmful to keep using the pans for baking, is it?

I wouldn't go NEAR aluminum if my life depended on it!
Sorry, but I believe the old story that it contributes to the development of Altzheimer's. My MIL loved her beer -- she drank TONS of it, all from aluminum cans -- and she died from Altzheimer's.
When I bake, I use stainless steel, glass, pottery or porcelain. I'll use aluminum only if it's coated with something else, and I never allow aluminum foil to touch my food. I'll cover my pan with the foil, but never cook on it.
Actually, the cookware I like the best is the old stuff called "Visions." It's glass -- and that's why I like it -- I can see how it's cooking without lifting the lid. And you can take it from the oven to the fridge -- and microwave in it! I love the stuff. You can find it at a lot of garage sales or flea markets, antique or junktique stores. Whenever I see one, I buy it up.
I don't even use baking powder (it contains aluminum!); I use Bakewell Cream instead.

I like your ramblings!  You always have good information.
Actually, I don't know if these pans are aluminum... I assumed they were, since they were incredibly cheap pans. I prefer the Visions/Corning/glass bakeware myself (I love love love my antique milk glass pie plate!), but... well, I don't know, there's no excuse for me. I figure I'm going to trash all this stuff when we move anyway, and buy all new bakeware. (My pots & pans, btw, are stainless.)
I never heard that about aluminum and Alzheimer's! You know I'm going to go look that up now.

Hey Bev,
Just though you might want to know there is baking powder without aluminum in it. It is called Rumsford Baking Powder - I buy it at Trader Joes but it is available elsewhere.
