Hi all,
I've been dying to make some plain angel food cake for awhile as a way to try and get some extra calories with something easy on the tummy. Thing is, I've never made it in my life and don't have a recipe for it. I've done some searches but they all seem to come up with variations, I'm just looking for a recipe for the plain cake.
Can anyone help me? Thanks, Kelly

Hi Kelly,
How ya feelin'? Everything back to normal now?
Girlfriend, I just use the box mix. I don't think you can beat it -- it's delicious! I've made angel food from scratch, and the box mix is every bit as good. I buy Safeway brand because it's a LOT cheaper than the name brand, and it tastes every bit as good. It's really great with the Pillsbury canned vanilla frosting.
Hope you're doing better now that it's all over.

No, sadly things are not back to normal yet, but I'm eating so little calories and food I thought the angel food cake might be a good thing to try.
In fact, I had to miss another day of work this week due to really bad D and cramps Not too good at all.
Are the mixes safe to eat? I sorta thought that it was always better to try and make things yourself, rather than rely on the safeness of the mixes. Anything I should watch for on the labels? Thanks, Kelly

Kelly, I'm sorry you're still feeling so terrible.
Most angel food cake mixes I've seen are safe. I may have seen one with dairy in it, so watch out for that... when in doubt try the generic store brands, they're more likely to be dairy free. Other than that angel food cakes by nature contain only egg whites and are low fat, so you should be perfectly safe with a mix! And they're soooo much easier!

Hi Kelly,
Damn, I hate that you're not better. At least you know what you have to deal with now. I'm sure you WILL get better; we just have to work on it.
Kree answered your question perfectly, as usual. And, as she said, I buy the store brand; it's just as good as the name brand. But the only mix I buy is angel food cake. Look on the ingredient list; you'll notice there's no dairy and no fat of course. It's perfectly safe. I like to add a little almond flavoring and even some chopped Maraschino cherries. Mmmmmmmmm, yum!

I was comparing ingredients in a few of the box mixes and found that some do contain dairy - I think it was Betty Crocker, but the Duncan Heines box mix does not. I eat the duncan heines brand every single day - and a LOT of it too! Its the only thing I have found lately that I can eat a lot of without worrying. Im hoping it will add a couple of pounds on too!
