Sorry gals, seeing as I am new and learning I think of questions then have to ask hope you don't mind. In North Carolina I love to go to Rucker John's with my husband. One of my all time favorite dishes is a fresh spinach salad with honey/mustard (warm) bacon dressing. Does anyone know if this is ok? Sorry to be a pain.

Hi Shirl, don't feel silly asking questions! There are a few possible problems with that salad. First of all, salads bother a lot of IBSers because they're so high in insoluble fiber, so I'm assuming this isn't the whole meal? Because whole meal salads are pretty much a no no. It's usually possible to have a small salad after a high soluble fiber meal, though. As for this one, the bacon dressing would be a problem right off the bat because bacon is made of pork and is very high in fat... huge trigger. Plus most salad dressings are made with lots of oil. If the dressing is simply honey and mustard that would be okay, but you'd better ask. Sorry I can't give you better news! You could always make an IBS safe version of this using soy or turkey bacon and a low fat dressing and eat it after your meal!

Shirl, never feel silly asking any question that bothers you. We've heard it all here -- and have asked our own share of "sillies." That's the only way we can learn -- 'cause our GIs certainly aren't gonna help us! -- okay, I better not go there ....

Salads by themselves are a no-no, as Kree says. I used to love one-meal salads. Hubby and I used to love to go to Izzie's (a marvelous salad bar) and I'd get fresh broccoli and peas on mine with a marvelous honey dijon dressing -- oooh, I can taste it now!

I'd leave the restaurant, get in the car, drive onto the main drive, on my way home -- and it would hit. BAM! Oooh, I had a hard time getting home in time. Cramps and diarrhea like you would not believe!

It's not worth it.

I tried having bread beforehand, but it didn't help. I haven't returned to Izzie's; I just don't dare.

Sorry for the bad news.

Bev

I was dieting for about a year and had a lot of salads (not to mention fresh raw fruit and veggies for snacks!). And we wonder why that's the year the IBS got out of control and knocked me off of my feet (literally)!?

I had been so unstable over the last year I hadn't really been brave enough to try a salad. Now that I'm pretty stable most of the time, I sure don't want to mess it up! I know I don't do well with raw veggies at all, so I just avoid them. I get my veggies by cooking and chopping and mixing! I don't want to have a major setback just 'cause I was craving a salad. But I do miss them from time to time... (Especially Outback Steakhouse's Queensland Salad, but that's a whole 'nother sobstory!)

Sayonara salads!
