I'm thinking about buying one.
Not one of those fancy fuzzy logic ones.
Just a simple inexpensive type.

I actually bought a 3-cup Panasonic at Linens and Things yesterday (for $20), but it boiled over and made a big mess making just the basic one-cup rice!!!!
So I'm returning it to the store!

Has anyone had success with another model/brand?

No, Marty, I'm sorry, I don't. I have had a Black & Decker "Handy Steamer" for many years that I use to steam veggies, and, although it's intended for rice, I've never used it for rice -- so I can't answer your question. Maybe someone else can.
