Do most grocery stores carry cooking apples? And if not will any other kind of apple work?

cooking apples are any kind of apple that holds up well to cooking and doesn't get mushy, generally granny smith are the best, but I have also used Macintosh, Fuji and Gala apples. Any grocery store should carry Granny Smith (green) and Macintosh apples.

Thanks Shelly! I made these and they were great. I used ground chicken because that is what was on sale at the grocery. Even my carnivore bf loved them ( he ate 3 in one sitting)! Have you experimented with other spices for different flavors? Have you ever used an egg white to help hold them together better (I am obviously not a seasoned chef...)? I will be making these again!

do you use instant white rice for this since you only cook it for 10 minutes? I wonder if brown rice would work...but it takes longer to cook.
