Is it OK to cook with wine? If not, what do you substitute it with? I drink absolutly no alchol because I am on Prevacid. I found a recipe I want to try to use, but it calls for wine and I want to be safe. Is it better to just forget the recipe?

On the amount of wine, and your stability. Traditional thinking is that all the alcohol burns off, but of course you are left with the other potential triggers (tannins, I think, stuff like that). If you are just using a little bit in a sauce or something I'd say you'd be fine IBS-wise. But, I don't know anything about upper GI stuff so I'd talk to your doc about what to do about the Prevacid.

I think I will just avoid the recipe for now...just in case. Thanks!

I'd say it definitely depends on the recipe. I also have acid reflux, and I find that wine makes me very acidy at times. So does this recipe use a lot of wine, or a small amount? Is it with other acidy ingredients like tomato sauce, citrus, etc. or not? I'd say those would all be factors in whether or not it would bother you. And your stability too, of course.

I cook with wine all the time! I don't have any problems with cooked wine although lots of problems with fresh wine. I don't know, however, about drug interaction. If you can't use wine you can always substitute broth. I can't think of any other acceptable substitute. I think if the pharmacy says it is okay you should try it.

M, when you cook wine the alcohol boils off, so you don't have to worry about it. -Bob

Kree - I have been pretty stable lately...not totally stable, but much better than a couple of months ago. The recipe is for Meatball Minestrone...looks really yummy - it calls for 1 Tbsp and 1/2 cup red wine. It also have a 14.5 oz can of cut tomatoes in it. Those are all the acid triggering ingrediants in the recipe. I actually have stomach ulcers too, so I am not sure if I am ready to go for the tomatoes yet. I have an appt with a new GI dr next month, maybe I will just wait and see if he says I am ready for acid causing stuff yet. BTW - what do you take for your acid reflux? They have me on Prevacid twice a day, which is twice the maximum dose.

I'm lucky... my acid reflux isn't bad enough that I've had to take any meds on a regular basis yet. I've taken a couple of 14-day courses of Prilosec OTC when it's been worse than usual, but for the most part I just take a Zantac when I'm acidy and it works pretty well. Your recipe does sound like it has the potential to be pretty acidy, so it couldn't hurt to ask your doc first. Even I have to be careful of tomato-based soups like that. But hopefully your meds are doing the trick and your doc will say go for it!

Yeah - I think I will wait. My acid is only under control if I takes my meds. For awhile I tried to go without them, and I got way worse. Even a banana would cause me acid.

I just found this in a Cuisine at Home magazine and am typing it verbatim. Obviously, use the subs that are IBS safe for you.
If the recipe calls for.. White wine Substitute: white grape juice; chicken or vegetable broth; ginger ale
Red wine Substitute: grape juice; cranberry juice; chicken, beef or vegetable broth; flavored vinegar; tomato juice
Brandy Substitute: white grape juice; apple juice, cherry, peach, or apricot syrup
Beer Substitute: chicken, beef, or mushroom broth; white grape juice; ginger ale
Rum Substitute: pineapple juice with almond extract or molasses; vanilla extract
Vodka Substitute water; apple cider or white grape juice mixed with lime juice
Sherry Substitute: vanilla extract; orange or pineapple juice; coffee.
