I can't think of anything else that would have a hoisin-like flavor, but maybe Amie knows of a combination of things that'll work... she's better with that kind of thing than I am, I think.

Do you just not like hoisin? Because I think it's safe otherwise- I use it all the time. And if it's the flavor you don't like.... hmm. Now I really don't know what to suggest as a replacement!

I did a Google search on "hoisin sauce" + substitute and found some recipes for you to make your own - supposedly these have a milder taste, if that's the problem:

I'd be careful with the yeast extract these recipes call for: it's probably MSG in sheep's clothing.

I don't think I don't like it.. although I can't be sure that I've ever tried it.

I was just interested in making krees burgers without having to run to the store to buy it... but I think that it will be easier to just run out and buy it instead of trying to make it.

thanks ladies!

it is pretty much my favorite sauce. Miso with molasses is what it is like but I don't think that would sub well. I hope you buy some and like it. I keep an extra bottle around all the time! Great on rice.

I ended up buying one today and I used it in my burgers, but with alot of other things too. I'll have to try it on rice.
