Hi - wonder if someone could help, I'm new to all this cooking for myself malarky and have just made some ADBs, they are a great consistency but look a bit dark and taste a wee bit bitter. I did substitute 1/2 of the sugar for more apple sauce, could this be the problem or do you think it was too much cocoa for the mixture? Would love to hear back, as I'm nearly there!! Thank you - Nik

they are dark- but i was riased on dark chcoolate and semi sweet.. bitter would mean not enough sugar content- either the applesauce wasn't sweet enough or there wasn't enough sugar with it... I'd put the sugar back in, or at least more of it.. this recipe isn't overly sweet on its own, just about perfect to my taste.. maybe try it the real way- if its too sweet, cut back somewhat on the sugar.

...if you're using unsweetened apple sauce, then the recipe isn't that sweet as it stands, so I'd try doing them agin with the amount of sugar stated in the recipe!
Good luck.

Thank you guys - the applesauce was homemade and I didn't add much sugar to that, so next time I'll use the right amount of sugar!! Ta again!

I think Linz has some good advice. I've made them as written many times and never noticed them to be at all bitter. I'd recommend giving them a try that way!
