blender or food processor?

I am in the process of trying to purchase a food processor, and I would love to hear people's opinions about whether a food processor or a blender is more useful. I've seen lots of recipes that call for a food processor, but I like blenders for smoothies. It doesn't really make sense to buy both since I'm in college and have a tiny kitchen. Also what size food processor is better, a 7 cup or 11 cup?? Any advice on this would be much appreciated 
Also, question about onions. I CANNOT chop onions; they make me cry like a baby and sometimes the tearing up sensation even makes me nauseous. I've tried lighting a candle next to me or putting a match in mouth, and this only seems to help temporarily...Any thoughts?? Thanks!

Well, I just got an 11-cup food processor for Christmas, and I love it.  The nice thing about the processor is that you can chop things with it - like onions! heh - with all the blades and gadgets you can get for it, it's definitely more versatile than a blender. If you do a lot of cooking, I'd say it's worth it.
As for the onions, the only thing that's ever worked for me is to cut the onion next to the sink, with cold water running. I have no idea why this works. LOL!

I saw a multiple thing once lately that was both but I can't remember anything else about it!  However I think food processors are way more expensive. I bought one lately that wow! was pricey. Blenders are cheaper and they can do a lot. Except for smoothies though food processors can do it all. I wish I still had a stick blender, they are neat. Too bad you didn't live by here since I just sold my little Cuisinart processor at a garage sale!

I have a blender that has a food processor attachment - and love it! It's a Hamilton Beach blender and although I forget what speed it is, here are the details for a 10 speed blender.

Blender/Food Processor
Blender with 56 oz. plastic jar
Food processor with 3 cup capacity
Ice breaker/pulse speeds
SureRest™ jar base
Easy-clean buttons and base
3 year limited warranty
Now it doesn't hold as much as a regular food processor, but it does the job if I do one vegetable at a time. I especially love it for onions! I just quickly rough chop it into 4 pieces and it chops them for me.
I found mine at Walmart, although I had to eventually order it from Walmart.com because they sold out quickly and I had waited too long.

that you can use with a standard glass jar..the kind a pint or quart of mayo comes in. (just put the blades on and screw the plastic ring over it)...I had one of these blenders and would make a small smoothie in an empty pint size mayo jar and just drink right out of the jar...no need to use/clean the blender container...try it and see if it doesn't work. Yes, I liked the food processor attachment as well..for small batches of things it worked great. Quote:

I think you're thinking of one like this one: Magic Bullet Blender.
This one is different because there are no plastic rings. Not sure you could put a glass jar on it because the blade needs to be inside the blender or food processor attachment.
The Magic Bullet Blender does look cool on TV, though! I've thought of going to the "As Seen On TV" store to see what it looks like in person.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I got an eleven cup Cuisinart today and I'm very excited although I haven't had a chance to use it yet!! As soon as I figure out all the technical parts I'll be grinding and mixing away! Thanks again.

Nope, I was doing it this way with HB blenders years before the Magic Bullet ever came out on the market.

Take the blade off the blender..then put it on the jar opening (blade facing down into the jar), then screw the large white plastic base ring (as shown in your picture, the one that fits on the blender base) on to the jar. All you're essentially doing is replacing the blender container (plastic or glass) with a dumb old standard mayo jar.
I just checked mine, and it is a 12 speed. If they changed the size of the opening on the 10 speed it wouldn't work, but I think all the HB blenders have standard size threaded openings. Will check it out at the store next time I go.
Ha, I can just see it now..will have an empty pint mayo jar in my purse to see if it works on the 10 speed models.
BTW, I have little one cup containers it works with too. Years ago HB used to give/sell them to use for little things if you didn't want to use the big blender container. You can still buy them in some kitchen stores. Those tiny containers lead me to discover you could use any jar with that standard size openning.
The Magic Bullet Blender does look cool on TV, though! I've thought of going to the "As Seen On TV" store to see what it looks like in person. From what I could tell you only got 2 choices of sizes of containers, and it was just another gaget I'd need to find a place for  ..LOL.
