I bake for myself from scratch but as I pulled out a box of my kids' favorite brownie mix the other day I didn't find anything wrong with the ingrediants, just with the stuff they ask you to add (eggs, oil etc.) Is it possible that Duncah Hines Brownies might actualy be safe if I use egg beater and replace 1/2 the oil with apple sauce or did I miss something inthe ingrediants that might be dangerous?

I'm not familiar with the mix itself, but it is possible that it's safe for us. The things to look for are dairy derivatives - caseinate, casein, whey, nonfat milk, lactose - whole egg products, and I try to avoid lard (hey, you never know, it might be in some mixes!). If it doesn't have any of that stuff, and the mix itself is relatively low in fat (I use 3g fat per serving in the dry mix as my upper limit), then yeah, I'd say go for it and try modifying it.

It may be, what is the fat / calories? (I have to admit though, I still am not sure how to figure out if it's safe, I just estimate on what seems like alot of fat or not and how much I want to chance it )
I have heard that some cake mixes are safe, I used a Duncan Hines moist deluxe variety to make the Pumpkin cake w/ Normal Ingredients that is in the recipe index, hasn't givne me problems. It is safe, but the cake mix is alittle high in fat, it seems, I forget how much, but adding the pumpkin I assumed it was ok.
Sorry I still wasn't that much help

Found that on peta's website (how I found out about the brand for cake mix), I believe the brownies were on the list.
