When a recipe calls for shortening, what can I use for a substitute? For instance, I have one that calls for 1 1/2 cups of shortening... do I use applesauce and canola oil in this case??

unless the taste will be greatly affected by using applesauce (as in something spicy and not sweet) use 3/4 cup applesauce, 1/4 canola per cup of shortening in most recipes.. works wonderfully... if your worried about making it too sweet- you can cut the sugar back next time or use unsweetened applesauce (if anything that is slightly acidic)
