What can I use as substitutions for chipotle powder: chilli powder, crushed chillies, curry powder...??
Thanks

I tried looking for you, and all I got was cayenne. But, that's spicier that chipotle, so I don't even know if I'd want to sub it with that. One site used liquid hickory smoke. Which recipe are you subbing for? Can you not find ground chipotle where you are or order it through mail?

I know - getting all these ingredients in Canada is so tough. I had to get the chipotle when I was in Cincinnati. Anyway, you can always omit it. I did read in a magazine that Tabasco now has a Chipotle Tabasco sauce. It will definitely be hotter than just chipotle, but it should add the smoky flavour you're looking for. It may not work for chutneys etc. but if you're into a bit of heat, this might work. I agree with the liquid smoke thing - but I find that the hickory liquid smoke doesn't add the right flavour in some things. See if you can buy plain smoke. I haven't been able to find that, either. Sigh.

No, as Hansolo said it is hard to find things in Canada, especially a remote town that I live in!!! I was using it for the smokey sweet potatoe soup in heathers book...I made it with a small amount of crushed chillies and it was still good...I can only experiment and find out which works best I guess! Thanks for the replies.
