Communion for Sick Girl Declared Invalid
Thursday, August 19, 2004

This I found on Fox News.com:

BRIELLE, N.J. — An 8-year-old girl who suffers from a rare digestive disorder and cannot eat wheat has had her first Holy Communion (search) declared invalid because the wafer contained no wheat, violating Roman Catholic doctrine.

Now, Haley Waldman's (search) mother is pushing the Diocese of Trenton (search) and the Vatican to make an exception, saying the girl's condition should not exclude her from the sacrament, which commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ before his crucifixion. The mother believes a rice Communion wafer would suffice.

"It's just not a viable option. How does it corrupt the tradition of the Last Supper? It's just rice versus wheat," said Elizabeth Pelly-Waldman.

Church doctrine holds that Communion wafers (search), like the bread served at the Last Supper, must have at least some unleavened wheat. Church leaders are reluctant to change anything about the sacrament.

"This is not an issue to be determined at the diocesan or parish level, but has already been decided for the Roman Catholic Church throughout the world by Vatican (search) authority," Trenton Bishop John M. Smith said in a statement last week.

Haley was diagnosed with celiac sprue disease (search) when she was 5. The disorder occurs in people with a genetic intolerance of gluten, a food protein contained in wheat and other grains.

When is the Catholic Church going to "get with it?" Get a younger Pope in there!

It's gonna take far more than a new pope, which, incidentally, they can't just get... ther's almost no historical precedent for a pope leaving office till he dies. So this old fart will have to kick off, but it doesn't seem likely the new guy will be too much more progresssive. The Church is in a move toward the right, especially in the third world, where Roman Catholicism is the largest and fastest growing religion.
In the US, on the other hand, the liberal and compassionate churchmen from the 60's are dying off and retiring, and the new guys (what few they are) are quite reactionary and determined to keep the disobedient US churches in line.
In my opinion, such as it is, it's a place for people who like a lot of structure and feel most comfortable when others tell them what to believe and how to practice, and all too often it seems the Church is willing to sacrifice compassion for the sake of upholding the letter of the law. The same struggle has been taking place for decades with Catholics who are alcoholics; the church is unwilling to use NA communion wine so that these people may participate fully in the sacrament. And it's a huge thing for believing Catholics to be unable to receive communion; that sacrament is the core of the Catholic's spiritual life.
Seems very cruel doesn't it?
My advice to this girl's folks would be to consider finding a nice Episcopalian congregation in their neighborhood. I don't see the Church budging on this issue anytime soon.
Scuse me if I vent. I've walked away from church life in every form after having worked for the Church for 22 years. Too many stories like this.

Ironic --I happen to be Episcopalian--Props for your opinion!! :) -nt- new

I don't agree with the Church's stance on this particular case or concerning wine and alcoholics. I also don't agree with the Catholic bashing. It seems that everyone out there when they get a chance bashes the Roman Catholic Church. The Church has done a lot of good in this world. I am not saying it is the perfect organization. By far, its not. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, so that is why I am giving mine. And my opinion is that I think Catholic bashing needs to stop.

I don't think my outrage at this is so much Catholic bashing as it is outrage that people who have power are so quick to dismiss this little girl and her problems becuase they can not except change. She is basically being told she is not good enough for christ but at the same time being told god made her the way she is. You are entitled to your opinion i total agree with that. My Opinion is that if we sit back and say or do nothing then nothing will change. If it had been any other church domantion doing something like this I would be just as mad and outraged. I belive in the chruch and they do some great things but that does not mean this should be ignored.

Exactly what is meant here by "bashing"? If by bashing you mean taking gratuitous pot-shots at a beleaguered institution just because it seems to be fashionable, I am by no means bashing. But if by bashing you mean expressing frustration with an institution, made up, after all, of fallible humans, that has worked for 2000 years to do good in the world, but in recent decades has gone horribly astray, largely due to its own hubris and unwillingness to change with changing times... well, if that's what you mean by bashing, then I guess I'm bashing. I am in complete agreement with you; the Church has done far more good in the world than bad. That's what makes the bad things all the more saddening and frustrating.

the sad part is not all catholic churches follow this already, even if the pope said it.. because I spoke to my neighbor about it- her church has rice wafers available to those who can't have wheat....

Well, what I found really insulting is when someone called the Pope an old fart. I find that to be extremely disrespectful. Maybe I am being a bit sensitive but the Pope is the leader of the church and should be treated with respect even if you don't agree with his opinion.

Ahhhh such controversy....Politics and religion...will get you in trouble all the time!!! I myself am a Catholic girl.
Just have to add my two cents in too! Whatever your religion is I think as long as you have one that is good. One wise (young, contemporary)priest once told me and my husband when baptizing our first son "I don't care if this child prays to Budah, I just want him to believe in someone!" I will forever remember those words. I believe whatever religion you belong to is what works for you. ALL religions are not perfect and I'd be first to say the Catholic religion is one of them, HOWEVER, GOD and all the saints have been there for me when I needed them and that's all that matters! AMEN

My nephew is allergic to wheat (no celiac) - his church provides a wheat free/gluten free host. His cousins church, a couple of towns away also provides WF/GF. I guess it depends on the diocese. Regards Anne

I think we should all just let this thread drop. Let's stick to lighter topics here. We wouldn't want to trigger an IBS attack in any of us, right??!!

Thanks, friends!
