We've been in the process of buying a house since April, and I haven't said much about it because it's been one problem after another. But we got the news yesterday that the appraisal process is done, so things are moving forward... we just have to get a plumber and an electrician for a couple estimates, and then we'll FINALLY get a close date. So exciting!
Here's where I'll be living in - hopefully - another 6 weeks or so:
![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/atomicrose/0407100010.jpg)
Don't be fooled by how little it looks... it's a 4-bedroom. That pic is from a couple weeks ago... this next one is from back in April, when we looked at it... the more recent picture of the back, the shrubs are so overgrown that you can barely see the deck! (It's a good thing I don't mind yardwork.)
![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v120/atomicrose/house9.jpg)
I could go on and on about the place, haha, so I'll just shut my trap for now before I bore everyone to tears. I'm so excited, though. It's such a kicka$$ house, and I will be SO happy to move out of this awful shoebox apartment and into *that*!

I'm sorry to hear your housebuying experience wasn't exactly smooth either. I think I was just spoiled. The last home I bought was in the D.C. area, and I swear, EVERYTHING - from looking at it to moving in - was done in 3 WEEKS. It was insane. So this time, it just feels like the entire process is moving soooo sloooowly.
I don't have too many inside pics... it's hard to get pictures of rooms, and kind of boring if they're just empty rooms anyway, heh. But here's the kitchen, very '70s but we love it, the only thing we're changing is that curtain:
And in keeping with the subject matter of the site - a bathroom! Haha. All 3 bathrooms are tiled - floors and some walls - with stained-glass windows.
There's stained-glass windows in the dining room and living room, too. The yard is all done in tiers, with little stone walls, and all but a section about 8' by 6' is landscaped. It's really just gorgeous. And it's an older house, too - built in 1920 - I love old houses.
Have I mentioned yet that I can't wait to move in? Hehehe.
Oh, and thanks!

Oh, it was kind of our fault. Our first house and we had to choose it in a weekend. We saw 40 houses in 2 days. We didn't have the time or the money to come back, so when things started going amuck with the three houses we liked we were panicked. In the end we spent more money than I would have liked, but we got our first choice. There were just all sorts of issues with mortgage companies etc. Next time we're going to rent for awhile in a city before we buy a house. ![](/messageboards/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)
Also, I LOVE that bathroom. How cool is that window with the tile? And I dig the retro kitchen too.

It really looks like a nice place Casey. I'm very excited for you.
My hubby and I bought our first house July of last year. So that feeling of a new house is still somewhat there. We've done ALOT of changes since then though. Painting, replacing carpeting, and building a retaining wall out front. We're still very happy here.

I sort of feel like a wet blanket on the whole process sometimes... this is his first house but my third, so it's kind of not as much of a big deal to me, you know? But *now* I'm excited, heh.
The changes are a good thing, though - they're what makes the place really yours. Glad to hear you're so happy there!

My favorite feature of the bathrooms? Heat lamps. I get cold even in the middle of the summer... I can't wait to soak in a hot bubble bath with the heat lamp on me. Haha.
Yeah, I can see where a rush like that would make the process difficult. 40 houses in 2 days... damn! We only saw 10 houses in 1 day and we STILL had trouble keeping them all straight! Anyway, glad to hear it all worked out!

I second that thought!! It never really felt like our house until we changed the floors. We put a really nice creamy colored burbur in and changed the vinyl kitchen floor and carpet in the dining room to an oak wood laminate. That just made all the difference in the world.

How's the housing market in Maine? We live in southern California, and THANK GOD we bought our condo before the current housing boom, but you seriously need $500,000 now for a 3 bedroom, 2 bath 1960s fixer-upper in a decent neighborhood... So depressing!

I love old homes too. We have owned three homes and our current one is my favorite. We are the third owners and the previous owners updated the inside of the home. We even have a bathtub with jets and nine foot cielings on the first and second floor. I can go on and on, because I love my house. ![](/messageboards/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

We paid $46,000 for it. And no, I didn't forget any digits in there. LOL!
The key to the market here is to move north. Right in Bangor, real estate is much more expensive - still cheaper than SoCal, but we really didn't want to spend $80K on a 2-bedroom house that we'd then have to drop another $20K in repairs into. So we started looking north, where the local economy, honestly, sucks. Adam will have a 1-hour-each-way commute to work now, but he thinks it's well worth it. A lot of families up here are taking that same route.

That's part of the plan, eventually! But honestly, we already have all 4 bedrooms filled. We knew when we started looking that we wanted a 3-bedroom - I work from home, so I need an office - and I'm tired of having computers in the bedroom (our current setup) - and we need to sleep somewhere. The 4th bedroom is kind of weird... it's technically an "inlaw apartment", with its own separate entrance off the back deck. So we're going to use that for a guest room, it's kind of inconvenient for anything else.
But anyway- thanks!

It was built in 1920. It looks like it got a complete overhaul in the '70s (hence the retro kitchen... I posted pictures further down in the thread), and it got a fresh coat of paint everywhere before it went on the market. The bathroom floors are all tiled (3 bathrooms!!), the kitchen has linoleum, and the rest of the house is carpeted - thick, brand-new, cream-colored carpet. It's gorgeous, even if it is going to be a nightmare with 2 black cats. LOL!
I think I may pull up a corner of carpet in one of the bedrooms and see what's underneath... I betcha it might be hardwood.
It's in excellent condition, inside and out. We'll have to have the roof redone before winter, but that's the biggest repair. It *looks* incredible.

Hey you, What an awesome house, no wonder you are excited! I would be too! From the front, it totally looks like a cute little house, I never woulda guessed 4 bedrooms - that's awesome! And of course 3 bathrooms is sweet.. you can never have enough bathrooms I say! The other half and I have been talking about places to live when we mvoe to Canada, and first we'll live with my family but when that drives me nuts, I am guessing crappy apartment until we have enough for anything bigger. Anywho, I said that no matter what, we are having more than one bathroom! Just having one bathroom in this tiny England house drives me CRAZY! Thank God the bathroom and the toilet are in different rooms, or I would have had some seriously traumatic times since his sis takes about 4 days in the shower! So yeah, yay for the bathrooms.. Nice bathrooms as well! I second you on the heat lamps, I have them in my house in Canada and enjoy them muchly. If you like gardening, isn't it kinda nicer to have a big project on your hands? Then you can really get into it, and do whatever you want. You could have much fun with that. I am jealous too. As for the one hour commute, that's a bit of a drag but I know so many people now that have to do it! I think it's all the cities getting way too expensive to live, but necessary to work! It takes my boyfriend, and all his family at least an hour to commute from London every day. Same with people I know in Vancouver - since we don't live right in Vancouver. Anyway, I am so happy for you! You totally deserve a kick@$$ house! ![](/messageboards/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif) --Steph

It sounds perfect. And now that I heard what you paid for it - I'm completely jealous. My parents thought my house was cheap because they are in Chicago and we are in a smaller town - and we still paid well over triple that amount. We will probably only stay here for about 5 years, and it's value will increase a lot because it's new contruction. We'll finish the basement and do a bunch of landscaping - I'm working on that now! I'm not that good with plants ![](/messageboards/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif)
Well anyways - that house will be perfect, and now you'll have tons of space to cook! ![](/messageboards/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

Actually, it might have been at one time. How old is the house? I'll bet there used to be a lot more land around it that was sold off over the years. And I'll bet the part on the right was added at some point, and I'll bet before then there was a large barn with an enclosed woodshed connecting to the main house. In the woodshed or extension of the barn was the outhouse. I'll just bet. And is the kitchen in the back of the house? Could there have been a door back there, going into the woodshed? And in that kitchen in the back, I'll bet at one time there was an old water pump in the sink.
Is there a front parlor? I'll bet there used to be horsehair couches in it. Is there a central room with doors off to the hallways? I'll bet there used to be a large wood-burning stove in it, which is where everyone gathered in the winter-time, with all those windows closed to keep the heat in.
And I'll bet there's an old stairway going up to the bedrooms upstairs, and on that old stairway used to be a collection of old irons, one on each step.....
Do you have pix of the interior? I wanna see! I wanna see!
I'm not jealous, just a little sentimental, remembering times long ago. Those times are long gone, and I have to move on, but I'm an old Mainer at heart, and always will be.
Our new house is very reminiscent of an old farmhouse, but western farmhouse, not New England-style. It's a very old-fashion floor plan, not the typical open style of the new homes nowadays, and we have arched doorways and old-fashion mouldings around the floors and windows. The wrap-around porch is really very western farm-style; I just ordered some wooden porch rockers for the front porch.
Our old cottage on Lake Kezar had a screened-in porch, and daddy had some antique rockers that we'd all sit in and rock while looking out over the lake, just 20 feet in front of us. Daddy would sit there and rock for hours, looking through his binoculars, while us kids would be out in the lake, swimming, trying to get him to come into the water with us.
Happy days, happy times.
The old cottage kept sinking into the sand; daddy "jacked it up" on cinder blocks every year. It was just a cottage and eventually had to be torn down.
We used to go visit Aunt Mattie Whitehouse, who had a house just like yours in South Berwick, and Aunt Mattie Gibson, who had an old mansion on the ocean at Wells Beach. Of course they're all dead now....
Why am I such a sentimental old slob?

Gee, no outhouse?
I hope when you remodel the kitchen, you do it in an old-fashion style with a farm sink and an old fashion stove, maybe even butcher block counter tops. Pass on the water pump though....
I knew there'd be a back door from the kitchen -- don't forget to add on the old woodshed back there!
Stained glass window, eh? I love it. Hubby and I do stained glass; we have plans to do some windows in the new house.
Casey, I'm so excited for you. This is just a super neat old farmhouse. Way cool.

The house was built in 1920? You bet there are hardwood floors under those carpets!
You'll have to look up the history of the house and find out if it wasn't an old farmhouse, who built it, who lived there, maybe even find some old momentos in the attic....
Ooooh, I just love it, Casey! You done GOOD. I can't get over the price you paid.
When daddy bought the old cottage on the lake, it was before the war. He could have bought all three cottages in the cove (it used to be a resort) for a total of $3,000. He didn't have that much money, so he opted for the cottage closest to the water (20 feet away), fully furnished, 3-bedrooms, for $1,000.

What a lovely house!! I'm so jealous! My husband and I live in royal Oak (Metro Detroit-Michigan) and the prices here are just so expensive. We bought an old house also, built in 1922! Our house was part of a larger estate. It actually started off as the servants quarters! The small house next to ours was the carriage house. Before they sided it, you could still see the very large double doors on the back of it!
Our house is small, just over 1,100 sq feet. Technically, its 3 bedrooms but the bedrooms are so small we can't even fit a bed AND a dresser in one room! I use one of the bedrooms as my dressing room! Its only got ONE TINY bathroom also. We hope to expand someday but its just not in the budget. Our house cost 3 times as much as yours!!
Congratulations! How Exciting!! I just love all the stain glass!

Believe me, there's nothing Adam would like more than to put a big ole woodshed in the back... but there's no room! It's a tiny yard - half of it is deck, and half of it is landscaped.

Well, I don't know the history of the house specifically, but of the town - it's a mill town. The paper mill was built, in the middle of nowhere, and then a town was built to house the mill workers. Most of the town is row after parallel row of houses, all built at about the same time. (The "new" section of town is a development of small 1950s ranches... and yes, most residents still refer to it as the "new development", heh.)
The mill is barely operational now - most paper mills up here have closed - hence the dropping real estate prices. But regardless, I have a clear view of the aging mill from my back deck.
I bet you're right about the hardwood floors. And I bet there was a horsehair couch, and irons on the stairs, and a woodstove once upon a time. That addition on the right was *definitely* pretty new - we think it was a garage, but before that, it may have been a woodshed (it's on the kitchen side, and yep, the kitchen's on the back). But a farm house? Probably not. Which is ok. I still want to find out more about its history, and I'm going to try to do so once we get settled.
Alas, no goodies in the attic or basement... believe it or not, we checked the day we looked at the place!
