I got new contacts!

I went to a new eye doctor today, and he gave me some bifocal contacts to try. So far, I am seeing so much better---in the distance and up close! I have been reading my book all afternoon-----and no squinting!!! It's great to be free of my glasses.

He said my farsightedness had gotten a lot worse since last year, and no wonder I was having problems reading. Yikes! I should've gone to the doctor much sooner.

The only problem is I've had a tiny headache today with the bifocal contacts on. Does anyone know if this is normal? Will this go away as I get used to them?

Or are you ladies too young to have to wear bifocal contacts? It's probably something just for old ladies like me.

I have to tell you I laughed when the doctor walked in the room---because he didn't look much older than my sons! He said what's so funny? I said, "I must be getting really old! All the doctors look so YOUNG to me!" He just laughed and said, "You're making me blush." He was a cutie too! Dark curly hair and the greatest sense of humor! And best of all, he alleviated my squinting!!!

Back to my novel .....

Aren't they great?? I've ad mine for about 6 years and I love them! They can get annoying (and very expensive!!) but they're fantastic.

As for your headaches, my doctor told me that for the first day, I should only wear them for about 4 hours, then each day increase 2 hours a days until I could wear them all day without anything being affected. I hope this helps! Congratulations! It's great to see perfectly, huh?

Hey BL,

It really makes it better when the doc is cute....ha ha

I am "old", too, so I need reading glasses. I have tried bifocals but I couldn't wear them because they made me dizzy and I was always afraid I would fall. So.....I wear reading glasses for when I read only....on a chain around my neck for easy access. I don't need glasses for watching TV, driving, etc. I was always scared to try contacts because I freak out about putting something in my eyes but I have friends that swear by their bifocal contacts. Hope you enjoy yours.

Yay for new "eyes"! And a bigger yay for cute eye docs! Tee hee!

I get a headache for a couple days every single time I get new glasses or contacts. I'm almost positive it's normal, and it'll go away as you adjust. Now get back to that novel!

LOL, was that a romance novel you were reading and got side-tracked thinking of the eye doctor? Just teasing, glad to hear the contacts are working out well.I tend to have slight headaches each time i have stronger lenses put in my glasses,so im guessing the contacts would do the same.It will pass soon. Are they like regular bifocals where the lower half of the contacts are the bifocals or how does that work?

Congratulations on being able to see again. I think any time there is a change in an eye prescription there will be several days of adjustment. If your headache continues after a few days I would call your eye doc.

Yes BL that is normal to have a headache while adjusting to your new RX.

I haven't worked in Eye Care for four years - my question is, have bifocal contact lenses improved in the past four years? Four years ago the doctors I worked for still had a diffcult time making them work for their patients.

BTW where is Michelle? She is an Optician.

Yeah, my doctor was in this morning and we had some patients, but he's gone for the day!

Bifocal contacts are different than bifocal glasses. Most brands of bifocal contacts have the "bifocal" area in a ring around the entire outside of the lens. The lens in weighted so when you look down to read, the lens doesn't float up to far. They have come a long way in bifocal contacts in the last few years. They still won't work if you have astigmatism and need a toric lens though! My doctor, actually fits what he calls "modified monovision." Monovision is the alternative to bifocal contacts, you actually wear one distnace lens and one close lens. This sounds really odd, I know, but it works for a lot of people! Modified momovision, is wear you have one distant contact and one bifoacl contact. My doctor is almost 65 years old and thats what he wears all day long at work!

BL-just remember, that you do have some dryness to your eyes. When we read or work on the computer for long periods of time, we tend not to blink as much as we need. This will make the contacts dry out faster. If they start getting uncomfortable or your vision starts getting blurry, use the re-wetting drops! Think of the re-wetting drops as lotion of your eyeballs! Just like you put hand lotion on, when those eyeballs start getting dry, you gotta lub'em up too!

I'm so glad these are working for you! And a cute doctor also, BONUS!!

BL, we'd love to see your beagles, but it's YOU we talk with. We don't care how much weight you've gained -- or lost -- we don't talk to the weight, we talk to the person INSIDE. (Don't get me started on this issue!)

I was gonna try to post my own, but Mags, my computer instructor, said it's difficult because you have to have the right size or something; she sends hers to Heather, who posts them for her.

I do the same.

Ohboy, I can't wait to see the face of the person we're always talking with....

Great info. about bifocal lenses. I've been out of the loop for too long to know the lastest advances in contacts. How are the progressive contacts? Any improvement? Has there been any improvement with progressive lenses?

How many years have you been an Optitican?

The contacts are working great for me, but I'm still getting a bad headache after wearing them 5-6 hours. I can see perfectly up close and the intermediate vision is good (like looking at the license plate of the car in front of me), but in the distance, it's a little blurry.

When I go back in Monday, if he changes the prescription to improve things in the distance, will it make things blurrier up close? This is what happened every time I tried the mono vision contacts. If we got one right, the other suffered!!! I don't want one or the other, I wanna see well in both the distance and up close!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is that too much to ask? I'm hoping the bifocal contacts will easier for him to adjust since you don't have one for distance and the other for up close.

Any thoughts on this, Michele?

Lets see, I started working for an opthalmologist when I was 19, we didn't sell any glasses but did do contacts, I learned a lot of the medical stuff there. When I was about 22 I started working for optical places. The first optical I worked in, I was mentored by an older man who taught me everything. I have been in optical since! My 34 b-day is this Sunday, so its been about 15 years that I have been in the optical industry!

Yeah, the progressive eyeglasses lenses are pretty good as long as they are fitted properly!!! I recommend the Varilux Comfort brand of progressive lenses, it has the widest reading area. The whole key though, is in the fitting! Im not sure what state you live in but here in Michigan, you don't have to have any sort of training or licensing to do my job! Some of the bigger chains and cheaper places will hire just anyone and thats why a lot of people have problems! Not only do you have to select a frame the fits well and is adjusted properly, there are several measurments in the lenses that must be exact, or you will have problems. Than, there is the whole issue of the accurancy of the lab! Even if everything is fitted and measured properly, if the lenses were ground wrong, you won't see properly!

I used to work in one office where I did not only all the measuring and fitting but all of the griding as well! We don't have a lab in my current office but I think that because I have actually done the lab work before, it makes me better at what I do!

I get to order all of the frames for the office, thats the fun part! Its kinda funny, women will send their husbands in for glasses and tell them to let me pick out their frames for them! I think honesty is the key. If you explain to someone why that frame doesn't look good on them, they will listen to your advice!

As far as contacts go, we have a few people in the progressive contacts but this is less common. Again, they have to be fitted well, by a doctor who routinely fits them. If you are thinking about trying bifocal contacts, I would call around to some of the private doctors and ask them what they think of them, you will be able to determine what drs actually like fitting them! It can be a bit of trial and error. We fit a trial pair to a patient and send them home for a week to try them. When they come back we make any necessary adjustments, sometimes it takes 2-3 appoitments but we can usually make it work!

Ok, so thats probably WAY more than you ever wanted to know, sorry! LOL!

I'm afraid to say, it might! This is the reason why they don't work out for a lot of people. It may be that they can't make it perfect, at every distance, all the time with the bifocal contacts! My advice, if you really want contacts, have them fix it so its the best distance vision and get a cheap pair of reading glasses to put over them when you sit down to read a book. Even if they fix the distance, you should still be able to do some things up close, like read a menu and go to the grocery store and read all the prices. The problem usually develps when you want to sit and read for a long time, which I know you like to do!

A good pair of bifocal or progressive glasses should solve all the problems but I know its nice to not have to wear glasses all the time!

Don't give up hope though, let him make some adjustments, sometimes it takes a couple of tryies to see what works best for you!

No, no, no! I don't wanna wear glasses and contacts. That's the reason I want contacts--is so that I don't have to wear any glasses! I really, really want this to work. I have the Varilux progressive lenses glasses you were talking about and they work great, but I hate wearing glasses! I don't like having to point my nose at what I want to see---and I think they're dangerous when driving. (especially when backing up and you can't look at the cars behind you!)

This has gotta work!!!!! I'm not giving up!

As I said, don't give up hope yet! I just don't want you to feel too bad if it happens not to work out perfectly! Your new doctor seems like a good one so just let him know you will try anything! Be patient, it may take a couple of trips to get it right!

My husband is home for lunch. I asked him about the bifocal contact questions of Beaglelover. He asks have you fit any Varilux Elipse lenses?

That wasn't alot of information - it is interesting to read. Good for you for sticking with optical as long as you have - we need good Opticians.

Too funny!! That has to be the fun part of your job - knowing the wives trust you to find the right pair of glasses.

Glad to hear you are happy with your career.
