Ok, here goes. i haven't done this yet, so I figure i'm due. Lately i've been very stressed. My family doesn't really know or understand about my stupid spastic colon. Just went to a new doctor today and had a bunch of blood drawn and am going back next week for the results. Of course, while i'm in the office trying to explain to her what my symptoms are and everything, I break into tears. I did mangage to tell her about my sister's anxiety and of course how much I have. My stomach is the very first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning. You know how they say men think about sex every 6 seconds? Well thats how often I think about my stomach. Every single thing I put into my mouth, I worry about how it will effect me later.
These are just a few things that I have going on in my life right now. Recently graduated college and started new stressful job, got married a month ago, moved into new apt month and a half ago, have been pressured my whol life by my mother to show horses (was in therapy in highschool for that), have a 1/2 hour commute in Milwaukee traffic (largest city in Wisconsin) and both my husband and I have new cars to pay for.
whew, anyway, if anyone has any advice they can give me, now would be a great time!
I'm headed to bed now, it's only 10pm, but it's been a long day and I have a headache, which I normally don't ever get... Tylenol is safe to take right?

Thanks for listening, well reading.

RC, read my response to your post in the Diet Board about meds for anxiety.

Please consider the hypnotherapy. It can totally help you with this -- as well as the anxiety. Truly, you'll be amazed. I've learned SO much from Michael!

I know how you feel. For two years I've fought with stomach problems and only recently did the doctors finally relize I suffered from IBS. This advice is just my personal experience, so you might what another opinion just to be sure. Tylenol has been alright for me, asprin and other pain relievers generally cause flare-ups for me. As for stress, my way of dealing with it is getting away from it all and going backpacking for a couple of days. I know that might not be possible due to all your commitments. I've found that just getting away for an hour or two to a city park helps immensely. Try explaining your problem to your employer, I work as a City Rec Dept Life Guard (VERY stressful); I explained my situation to my supervisor and stated very clearly that there will be occasions when I need to get away from work. They were understanding and even complemented me later on the fact that taking the breaks from work made me a more effective employee. They'd rather that I put in 3-4 good days a week than 5-6 bad ones.

I do have a question. In 4 weeks I start college at Michigan Tech in Houghton, MI. My questions is, how did you deal with IBS in college? Any tips or hints? Thanks.

I'm finishing up my third year of college, and I've had IBS the whole time. It's rough, especially when all of my friends want to order food in or eat out but I can't eat any of it. Bagels are your friend, and if your friends want to order or go out, try Chinese (make sure no MSG!) or Italian places where you can usually finagle some safe stuff. I make sure I know where the closet restroom is to each of my classes, just in case (which is hard sometimes since I'm an engineer, and there aren't many ladies restrooms in some of the engineering buildings!). And make sure you get enough sleep, no matter what you have to do, whether it's not go out or do hw earlier or whatever.

Hope that helped some, it's late and I'm kinda rambling.

Sweetie, there is just too much piled up on top of your shoulders right now. IF there is one thing I learned after years of therapy.....look at the situation....is the world going to end if you don't do this, go there, go here, show a horse....paint a wall....I will tell you right now. IT puts everything into perspective. The only person who can stop the stress from your mom is you. You can do it.

Dont be like me, I had a breakdown, and if I dont take care of myself I will be headed back in that same direction. NO WAY AM I GOING BACK THERE !!

Take everything one minute at a time, before you make decisions, decide how important each thing is and how important it is if it happens or not.

Thinking of you honey, get better.

Thanks for the info. I plan to study Mechanical Engineering at Michigan Tech. I just started applying the IBS diet principles today. I can't believe the diffrence. Today was the best day I've had in two years!

Yay for engineers! I'm a double major: electrical and biomedical engineering at Drexel University. Yay for feeling better as well!

I know what you mean!! In my main building for school, we had 2 men's bathrooms on every floor, and there was 1 women's bathroom on the basement floor! They better change that soon...there are a lot more women in engineering these days.
