I'm on my second application for disability and am interested in both;

A) How many of you have applied? and,
B) Hom many of you are unable to work and/or socialize because of ibs?

And of course all the details

I know the two questions sound redundant but it took me awhile to get around to applying the first time.

I would use the poll but I am unfamilar with it.

I've applied 2 times for disability and was shot down. I've had to quit my job 11 yrs ago. But now I work a few hours a day. Supposedly IBS is not a disability. Sorry if I didn't give you the right answer! Sue

I applied and was turned down. I applied and was rejected again. Their reason? "Find a job near a bathroom."

Worms.

I haven't bothered applying for disability because I know I'm going to get turned down.

As for the second question, I'm definitely unable to work because of IBS. I lost a job because I spent too much time in the bathroom, and I was denied a permanent position from a temp job because I called in too much. I've now given up even looking for a job. Thank goodness I live with someone who doesn't mind supporting me.

The socializing has been slightly less of a problem... but only slightly. I'm usually fine at people's houses, but never go to bars/restaurants/etc anymore.

I was able to get short term disability for a few months to get things sorted out, however, my job is quite specialized, as well, I live in a remote area with no G.I's around. I haven't ever tried for long term disability.

I've never applied for disability, but I haven't been able to work outside my home for several years. I sell stuff online because I can make a decent contribution to our survival and I don't have to worry about handling ibs on an outside job.
I used to be a "D", but now I'm both, and on my "D" days, I just can't fathom being out there working some place.
The thought scares me.
My husband gets disability and he has a lot wrong with him, but even at that it wasn't easy to get. He's confined to a wheelchair, but it was the pits trying to prove all the million things they needed to know.
The best thing to have is a letter from your doctor stating your disability and how it prevents you from holding down a job. ANY job. My husband even had to prove that he couldn't work at a sit down job. (As if he could find one anyway!)
Good luck with your disability stuff!
Terri

I had to quit a really good job because of IBS. I was told that I do not qualify for disability. ( I think because there is not enough known about IBS.) I have been unable to work at a job for about 3 1/2 years. As for being "social", I have to be very carefull. I do not go any place new, because of the bathroom situation.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

hi.

i have not applied for long-term disability, but have for short-term. i have taken short-term several times.

i am able to work full-time (now) but think mostly that's due to Heather's diet. i was in a bad way up til last year.

My niece who is 33yrs old is on mental disability. She has the IQ of a 5th grader and is manic/depressive with severe panic disorder. She has been on and off of drugs, been in rehab and several mental facilities. Anyway she gets about $560.00 a month to live on. My sister(divorced) can't work because she has to be home taking care of my niece. So, that is all the money they have to live on. To add to this, my niece has a son 14 yrs old that my sister is taking care of, too. It is a real mess over there. To get back to the point..it was very hard for them to get disability and even now they are always having to fill out papers and meet with people, etc.

After all that rambling, I was going to tell you that I heard a lawyer advertising on TV the other day that he could help people that have been denied disability get it.
Don't know if that would work but just wanted to let you know.

The thing that really gets me about aplying is all this talk my uncle says about haveing to get a lawyer and appear in court. Which I obviously can't do.

My Dr. keeps telling me that I should remember that it's not nessarily a permement illness, however anybody that looks at the facts will see that a true cure is a looong way off. If even in my own lifetime. I have come to the conclustion that I must convence my Dr. of the level it is debilitating to me.

However I think it is paramount to at least keep on fileing for it so at least it gets the goverments attention. And for those of you who haven't filed i think it may be helpful to us all that you try to. If anything it will add to the numbers. Of course it must be noted here that I know very little of the politics of disability, however I don't see that it can hurt. I also think it is hurtful to apply when it is truely unneeded. what I mean by that is those that have it less severe.

Right now I'm living with my parents. The time will come when I must live with my sister. However money is always tight and living in isolation is not doing me, my family, or society any favors. In fact I find it dangerous to all involved.

peace.

Luther, they're talking about the post by JBL earlier. He's our friend Jamie whose been on the board a long time and he just changed his picture!!

Anyway, I completely agree with you that we should ALL apply and KEEP applying until the government and our society GETS IT!! This is a DISABILITY!!! What part of that don't they understand!!
