Hey everyone.... we got back from San Fran late last night... I think I was in bed within 15 mins of walking in the door.

As I posted Friday am.... I had really bad D... but I'm IBS-A. I took pills that stopped the D.... but unfortunately it stopped EVERYTHING!!

I did ok on the fight out but take off was REAL freaky for me. But once we were in the air I was ok.... Our flight was delayed taking off and landing so it was dinner time by time we got to the hotel so we did not venture out since we were 20 mins from downtown and did not want to get lost in the dark. So, we had dinner at one of the restaurants at the hotel and then we went to the gym and worked out. (I only did 20 mins cardio and then 15 min in the sauna) Shane did an hour cardio (I'll get there someday).

Sat... I ordered sourdough toast and cantaloupe (I chewed very very well). Then we showered and went to the convention.... my tummy was a little grumpy and I was still real bloated. BUT, good news,... we only had to stay for 1 hour instead of 3!! We went back to the hotel and changed and then drove downtown... we walked around and then took a 1 hr boat tour. That was cool when I was not having an attack The pain got worse and worse as the hour went on.... and then after that we walked and walked and walked and walked.... then my boss called with the location of dinner and of course that was in a total different area then he told us at the convention so we then had to figure out how to get there.... we walked, took a limo, walked, took a trolley, walked and finally got there (an hour early)I went in to use the bathroom (but no luck) then we walked more..... My boss, his wife, her highschool friend, her husband, a co worker and his fiance all met us there.... we walked to another location to have a drink (I had water) took pills (including ones that make me sleepy, but I NEEDED them)..... once we got back to the restaurant... we found out that you order "family style" and share... which made it IMPOSSIBLE to order anything safe for me. But that did not mater.... by the time the food started coming out for other people I started to get sick to my stomach and KNEW I would not be eating anyway. So, after the 1st dish got to our table and I almost lost it...I excused myself and went to the bathroom...I was hot and sweaty, my head was hurting, my tummy hurt so bad, and broke down and started crying. I was in there a good 10 mins (and nothing) . I came back out.... everyone kept asking if I was ok.... I felt like an idot....but they all know I have tummy problems (now they have SEEN it 1st hand). When dinner was finally over... we walked about another 13 blocks (it was starting to get dark)... and about the 10th block was a STEEP hill.... right in the middle of it...I had a major attack that just took my breath away.... Shane was ready to dial 911 on his cell phone.... I had to try to catch my breath enough to stop him. Once we got to the car... I took some deep breaths and then navigated back to the hotel. I laid down. Shane ordered some pretzels for me and chips & salsa for him from room service and got me some water. I got up... ate one pretzel and spit it out in my napkin.... I just could not do it....I drank more water... and about 20 mins later I had D again Shane read him magazine and ate his snack. I went to bed about 1:30am I jumped out of bed and ran to the toilet.... I was up at least 8 times by 7:30am my butt was raw from the cheap toilet paper.

Shane ordered me toast, a banana, & peppermint tea from room service. I was able to eat.... but my tummy was still real grumpy. I laid back down and then we called the airline to see if we could get an early flight NO LUCK. our flight was not until 8:30pm. I got in the shower and Shane went to the gift shop and got me some Vaseline to put on my butt. THAT felt good too!! So, the D stopped and we went back downtown. We took a 2-1/2 hours bus trolley tour around the city and knew there would be places to stop for the bathroom (asked 1st and they knew my needs) That went well only a few small attacks. After that ...... we returned our rental car and went to the airport THINKING it would take as long as it did in Seattle (2-1/2 hours to check in, get boarding passes, & security). It took us 35 mins!! So, we were almost 4 hours early. So, guess what we did? We walked..... Then we got dinner about 6pm... I got white chicken fried rice with no egg. I only ate the rice & chicken and lots of water. I was feeling pretty good..... we walked back to the terminal and we still had about 45 mins until boarding. And the attacks started again . Once we were on the plane and just before take off.... I felt this big rippling in my tummy... and THERE SHE BLOWS..... I farted all the way home!!! I never said anything and after we got off... I mentioned it to Shane, he said he did not notice...I don't know if I believe him... but hopefully that is the truth. I was fine on the cab ride home...but had my eyes closed the whole time.... it was worse then take off!! So, I got home....went to the bathroom... had a little more gas come out. Drank some water... and went to bed.... about 3:45am I started to have cramping again... and was in pain big time!! Needless to say... I was home sick today......

I say right now.... I'm about 75% better then I was Sat night at dinner.

Shane is going to grill me some lemon chicken breast and I have some plain white rice left over from this afternoon.

Hope I feel better as the night goes on.

Shell,

I'm sorry to hear that your trip was ruff on you. Do you know why you were so sick? Was it nerves? Or is this typical for your IBS? I have a hard time going on trips because of this very thing. I get sick everytime we go out of town. My nerves get crazy...I worry about the food and the bathrooms!

I'm sure sorry that you had a hard time. I hope you feel better tonight and tomorrow. Get some rest! Sounds like you need it!

Whew! What a story!

You took a trolley instead of a cable car?

Okay, kidding -- just kidding -- thought I'd throw in a little light humor. (Bad idea, Bev.)

WHAT CAUSED IT? You weren't feeling very well (with the D) before you left. Do you think it was stress over the impending trip itself? Shell, it sounds to me like there's something else going on. Have you ever had it this bad?

I'm truly sorry, especially because now you'll have bad memories of SF, and that's a real shame. At least you had Shane with you. I haven't met him, but I sure like him. He's a keeper!

How are you feeling now? Any better? It's gotta feel good being back in your own bed and your own toilet, am I right?

I'd really be curious to know what brought it on.

Welcome home.

Bev

Sorry you didn't get to enjoy your trip. I felt terrible for you reading through your post but when I came to the part that you wrote about thar she blows, I just cracked up even though I felt so bad for you. You still have a sense of humor after all you went through. That's Great!

I just want to say Shane sounds like a really wonderful person who knows just how to help you through this. Having someone like that is better than all the meds you can take for the IBS.

I was also thinking of what you said about needing vaseline because of the toilet paper. When you feel better go put an extra roll in your suitcase so the next time you have to go on a trip it will be there when you need something nice and soft for your poor backside. (Hopefully you won't need it on your next trip, but just in case)

Hope you're feeling much better today. Take Care!

I'm still not feeling well, so I'm home sick..... bloating and cramping big time.... still have not had a BM I have a Dr appointment at 1:15pm.... so hopefully I can talk to him about the more frequent, painful and lengthy attacks I've been having. Then I have to go into the office after that and do the mail & banking stuff.

Shell,

Sounds like you had one heck of a trip. My stomach hurt just reading about everything you did. I kept thinking how brave you were to take a boat ride, trolly car, cab ride. I worry every time we travel or do anything. All I can think about is the bathroom and what if I have to go.

I have experienced that feeling of going out to eat and having to spend a lot of time in the bathroom. Nothing worse than coming back to the table and have people ask if you are ok.

I hope you are feeling better today. Let us know what the Dr. says.

Thanks everyone for your concern..... I'm at work and just have a second to update ya.

I'm NOT feeling any better.....

The DR increased my Lotensin (blood pressure meds) , increased my Hyoscyamine (antispasmodic) to take 2 instead of 1 AS NEEDED thanks Bevrs for correcting that , said I could stand to increase my Citricil by 2 pills a day (that would bring me to a total of 9), and put me on Lexapro (antidepressant) he said lets try to treat it from brain to gut. So, I will start that in the morning. He said I might feel like I've had way too much coffee and kinda strange but that will pass and I should see some results in about 2-3 weeks.... he is hoping this will help my bloating & cramping. I see him again June 22nd for a followup. He was otherwise happy with the changes to my diet (showed him both of Heather's books.... he was well aware of them both...)

Off to get some work done.....

Hope I feel better tonight!!

He increased your "Hycosamine"? I looked that up but couldn't find it. What is it, Shell? Did you mean to say "Hyoscyamine"? The antispasmodic? If so, did he want you to take it every day? Wow. It's got some scary side effects. EVERY day?

What blood pressure meds are you on that he increased? I'm on Hydrochlorothiazide. So is hubby (but his dosage is half of mine).

Gosh, we sound like old farts, don't we?!

SOOOO glad to hear of a doc who has heard of Heather's books. Is he a GI?

Sorry you're not better, Sweetie. But surely it feels better being back home in your own bed and your own toilet, yes? I'm amazed that you went to work. You're much more of a professional than I was; I couldn't do it.

Get better soon.

I think it really had a lot to do with stress..... I had not been on a plane in 9 years (before 911) and the fact that I'm a BIG GIRL... I did not know if I was going to even fit in the seats. I'm lucky I was with Shane, we were able to lift the arm between us so we both fit in the double seat. And knowing that the bathrooms on the plane are small too... did not know if I could fit in there either

The at the convention.... meeting people from other companies (both customers and vendors) that I have only talked to over the phone for the last 5 years.

Hi Shell,

Sorry you still don't feel well today. I wanted to make a suggestion that I noticed has really worked for my IBS (A). I also have Gerd and a hiatal hernia so I think this has really helped a lot. I take Digest More digestive enzymes, (one with each meal) and can't believe the difference they've made. I also have been taking Benefiber in the morning but what's even better is the Citrucel (mine is powder) that I take at night. Ever since I added the digestive enzymes and the Citrucel the pains and bloating have stopped and I have had normal BMs every day and sometimes twice a day.

For months I had D then went to C and couldn't go at all. This seems to have worked wonders.

You're doctor sounds really great reading about IBS as most doctors don't know that much about it. At least he CARES enough to keep up on it so he can help his patients. I agree with him that it is a brain/gut illness. If I'm very upset (as I'm sure you noticed when you were stressed) it seems to act up so much worse. I would actually keel over in pain for a while there.

Tell Shane not to be bashful by the compliments he gets on here. He is a real KEEPER!! I think kindness from someone like that helps us more than any meds we take.

I'm sure that everyone here who is going to the Fall Sprawl will all let him know and he deserves the compliments don't you agree?

Hope you're feeling better after you get home from work and get some rest.

Take care,

Pat

Shell, if you're not sleeping well, you'll never get better. Time to consider a sleep aid like Benadryl or Sominex for a night or two. Just my humble opinion.

Feel better hon!

That sounds like a good idea ya know!! Just wondering if you or anyone else knows if it would be ok to mix sleep aid & hyoscyamine? If not, then I would skip taking the hyoscyamine if I needed it. I don't take it everyday.... but when the mice are running around in there I sure do.... but it would be great to get a good nights sleep!!

Pat:

Thanks for the hug!

Should be fine to take them both. I just went to Medline and checked, plus I take it with Elavil and other stuff with no problem. Sweet dreams, hon.

I'm so sorry to hear that you've been feeling so terrible! Your vacation must have been so disappointing... what a bummer. I feel so bad for you. I'm so glad to hear that Shane was so supportive, though! It sounds like he was such a sweetie about the whole thing. You definitely have a keeper there Shell. Does he have any single brothers??

Anyway, I hope your changes in meds start working and that you start feeling more like yourself again soon. Feel free to vent to us whenever you need to! Hang in there!

Shell, I've been following this thread, feeling awful for you, and finally I had to interject a suggestion. Call your doctor and ask for a prescription for Donnatal. It's dangerous stuff; it contains Phenobarbital, so technically it could be considered addictive. However, it WORKS! I also have a prescription for Hyoscyamine (however it's spelled), but the Donnatal works MUCH better. I take it ONLY when I'm desperate, or on an emergency basis -- and this definitely an emergency!

Get better soon -- and let us know what the doc says.

Bev

LS:
Thanks for the info and the idea.... I JUST got home from the store and I forgot to add it to my list in my palm pilot I have a rule...if not in the palm or on a list don't buy it....at least that is what I tell myself...sometimes I argue with myself in the store!! LOL I'll add it now...and get it my next trip.

Kree:
Thanks for your concern and nice comments. Yes, Shane does have a brother, but he also has a very lucky wife (they were raised well)

Bevrs:
Thanks for the scoop on the "good stuff" Oh, I wish I would have known about Donnatal before my DR apt on Tues...I would have it in my hot little hands right now. Oh well.... I'll give him a call tomorrow when the boss is not around. It has been a ZOO.... a ZZZoooooooo I tell ya at the office!!

Gayla:
Thanks for your comments and concerns as well.... yes, I'll keep Shane!! I'm SO glad he is traveling to Las Vegas with me too!! Sure am glad this stuff is not contagious either!

Kandee:
Thanks for the warning.... I'll get some Benadryl my next trip to the store. (see above to LS)

I'm happy to report... the C is now over and it has changed to D.... I'm not going to take Equalactin this time.... and see if it makes a difference. I got to thinking.... the last three attacks of D that I have had... I started taking Equalactin and then all three times I got really bad C, cramping, & bloating that lasted for days two times causing me to miss work and once in San Fran and 4 days following.... maybe just a coincidence? My DR said it could not hurt me to take it.... but maybe MY BODY just does not care for it?? We will see.... I think it is peppermint tea time AAAwwwwwww.......

Glad you are feeling better, Shell. You mentioned you'd be going back to the gym......I myself am thinking about getting back into my lunchtime walking routine today. I feel so much better when I am exercising regularly. I'm in hopes it will help again. I can't remember, did you do the hypnosis program?

Isn't it funny how we are afraid to venture out and say, "hey, I feel GOOOOOD!" for fear it may not be true? Or that we might "jinx" it, and the bad will return, just to put us in our place?!

Shell, I'm glad for you. It's SOOOO about time. This was a nasty bout, and couldn't have happened at a more inopportune time for you.

Next time you see the doc, ask him about Donnatal.

Have a super holiday.

I SO need to be in the gym..... I have LOTS to lose.....but I'll do it!! No, I'm not on the hypnosis program. I inquired about it last month. I will try to save for it. Still have two more trips and Christmas to plan for too (eewww... I did not just type that word did I? LOL)
