I've noticed alot of us here are big readers. I was checking out some of the bios. I was at the library today and had no idea what to check out. I am not into sci-fi or mysteries. Anything else I am pretty much game. Suggestions?

I love anything by Dan Brown, author of Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons, etc. I'm also a huge Stephen King fan, but that's more into the mystery/horror genre. But if you haven't read Dan Brown, I highly recommend him!

Right now, I'm reading "Letters to An American Lady" by C.S. Lewis. I love his writings and this book has certainly been a great read so far. Have you ever read "The Screwtape Letters"? I highly recommend it, too.

i love Dan Brown, too. just rushed through all of his books during a recent illness when i was trapped. Da Vinci Code is the best, though.

i also highly recommend Lamb : The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal, by Christopher Moore. it's hysterical. my only warning is this, and i say this with the utmost respect to all, if you are very Christian and not able to enjoy religious writing with a sense of humor, this book may not be for you. it's a great book that "explains" the lost years of Jesus that aren't covered by the Bible. it's hysterical, creative and irreverant, without being truely insulting. Moore really did his homework and it's really a fascinating story. it just may not be up everyone's alley.

if you haven't read the Harry Potters, you really need to!

what else....

i'll have to think and come back to this. i'm a huge reader, but only recommend the best!

At the moment, I am reading "A Year By the Sea" by Joan Anderson. Its great! Books by Mitch Albom such as "The 5 People You Meet in Heaven" or "Tuesdays with Morrie." And, a funny one dealing with travel is "Neither Here, Nor There." If I think of anymore or come across a good book, I'll be sure to post it:) Take care!

I started the Da Vinci Code but didn't finish bcos I borrowed it from a friend who had to travel the following day. The first few chapters got me! I have to borrow that book sometime to see what happens. Ohhh the Harry Potter books! I abosolutely love them!!!!! When I first got IBS, I was so sad but then my Mom borrowed me a book and I thought if Harry could go through all that stuff and be strong, so could I. Hee hee. They really are wonderful books, not just for younger readers, but for anyone to enjoy.

I loved The Screwtape Letters when I was little. My parents had it and I read everything in the house. I know, I'm weird.

I didn't care for the Da Vinci code. But I think I'm well in the minority.

I'm currently reading a nice fluffy novel called The True and Outstanding Adventures of the Hunt Sisters. I haven't gotten that far.

I also checked out Horse Heaven by Jane Smiley (I liked her other books). There's a new book by David Sedaris due out June 28th that I can't wait for I'm so excited. I really want to read this memoir called Name All the Animals but it's on order at the library (we're trying to be frugal and not buy books). Some other books I read recently you might check out is a book called The Dogs of Babel that made me cry, and a book called My Life as a Fake about a poet who makes up a poet and then his creation comes to life and kidnaps his kid. I'd be interested to see what people think of it. I really loved Margaret Atwood's latest, Oryx and Crake, and it's in paperback now. It's sort of sci-fi, but very heavily literary sci-fi.

I could go on and on. Summer reading for fun. Sweet. I missed it so.

Also, I agree with the recommendation for Neither Here Nor There, it's by Bill Bryson, and ALL of his stuff is VERY VERY funny. I highly recommend it. His book about hiking the appalachian trail made me howl with laughter.

Have you read anything by Jonathan Kellerman or Faye Kellerman? They have quite a few books out. Also Diana Gabaldon, she has a series of 5 books that are really good.

I love Da Vinci Code too, but didn't think Angels and Demons was quite as good. I only found Dan Brown after hearing you lot fave about Da Vinci!

My ultimate summer book has got to be "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood". As my Mum says, it's therapy in paperback! But I'd avoid the other books by that author - they're even darker!

Another favourite author is Isabelle Allende - her books are absolutely amazing. I'm planning to get the latest one to read on honeymoon.

Harry Potter is a must-read and LOTR should be read at least once. I have loads of Agatha Christie's that I read again and again.

I adore Terry Pratchett's books - they're fantasy, not sci-fi and SO funny!

Hi Chinagrl,
The Screwtape Letters? What are they about? Maybe I will look for it in the library. Your book selections sound great. I'm always interested in reading different books that I haven't heard about, and recommendations are good. Dont worry about being frugal-- I am the same way:) The library is a good place to get books and bestsellers. And if you don't like the book, you can always return it & not worry about wasting money. Also, at my library they are getting the latest DVDs like "The Last Samurai," "Under The Tuscan Sun," "Love Actually," etc. And they are free to watch, yay! Lastly, I picked up "Neither Here, Nor There" at a library book sale. Its superb! Bill Bryson is honest and has an awesome sense of humor. I must check out his other books too. Have a nice day:)

Well, what do you like? Novels? True stories? Classics? Trash?

I only like true stories or classics. I figure it's a waste of my time reading anything that didn't really happen, unless it's a classic and has a moral to teach me. I'm also hard to please; if the author doesn't grab my attention in the very beginning, I'm gonna fall asleep and never "get into it."

My favorite author is Ann Rule. She writes true murder stories. She actually used to work with Ted Bundy, in the same office, sitting in the next chair. They were good friends. She wrote "The Stranger Beside Me." She also wrote "Small Sacrifices," an incredible true story about Diane Downs, who tried to murder her own children because her boyfriend didn't want children and she wanted to be with him more. Amazing stuff. Ann Rule writes so well, she keeps you totally spell-bound throughout the entire book, to the very end, where she finally analyzes the psychological reasons for why the murderer did it.

I also read anything I can get my hands on about the holacaust, especially survivors' stories. A really great one I just finished is "Lest We Forget."

Do you like something a little lighter? Maybe something with a little sarcasm? How about Kurt Vonugut's "Breakfast of Champions"? I loved that; I read it three times. It's hilarious -- and it's a classic!

Enjoy!

Bev

The Screwtape Letters was a book that was recommended upthread. It's by CS Lewis, the guy who wrote all the Narnia books (just in case you didn't know. ) If I remember correctly, and it's been a long time, it's a series of letters between a senior devil and his nephew who's a devil in training. It's very philosophical and Lewis writes all of his books from a Christian point of view (still interesting if you're not Christian though).

Ooh... DVD's at the library! That would be great. I hope my library gets some too!

I just finished reading "The Secret Life of Bees" and it was amazing. I guess it was a New York Times bestseller for a reason. It was a very quick read because I could hardly put it down, yet it was very deep. Good stuff.

I agree about Harry Potter! I loooove those books! If you haven't read them yet you need to!!

I really loved A Thousand Acres too! My favorite Shakespeare play is King Lear... so I was really interested in the retelling and I thought it was very well written. I've read several of her books, Moo, which is about a University, and The All True Travels and Adventures Of Lidie Newton which was about a woman on the prairie (sort of a grown-up Little House). If you like her books, you might like Anne Tyler or Carol Shields. Have you read any of theirs?

Oh no, you're not her only fan, not by a long-shot! She's a writer whose books you can't put down.

Did you read "Small Sacrifices"? When it first came out, we owned a second home in Oregon, not far from where it all happened. In fact, after I read the book, my hubby read it, then my sister-in-law, then her mother, then my mother-in-law ..... none of us could put it down! So then, we drove down the infamous road where she drove her children to murder them and where she said she met up with the "bushy-haired stranger" (who was supposed to have done the deed instead of her).

I just couldn't believe any mother could do that to her children. The story was FASCINATING, and her writing incredible! (Did you see "Small Sacrifices," the made-for-TV-movie starring Ryan O'Neil and Farrah Fawcett?)

And then, "The Stranger Beside Me." Did you read it? It's about Ted Bundy. When Ann Rule worked for suicide prevention (I think that's where it was), Ted Bundy worked with her, all the while murdering all those women. The police were looking for a "Ted," but Ann Rule never for a moment thought it would be the guy sitting right next to her! He even walked her to her car every night because he told her it wasn't safe out there ......

Yeah, I read the book you mention -- about Sheila Belush -- then saw the story about the murder on "American Justice." Horrible, horrible stuff. Incredible reading.

Yeah, you're right, Ann Rule is the BEST!

Yes, i have read "Small Sacrifices" it was a great book, i have read it more than once even.Another great book that made you think was a book about Darlie Routier,it was not written by Ann Rule, sorry i dont remember the author.Darlie was the young mom of 3 boys who claimed someone broke into their Texas home and slashed her throat and stabbed 2 of her boys while they all slept in the family room.It was a really interesting book, makes you wonder if she really had anything to do with it or not.Lots of unanswered questions and even some suspicions that her own husband might have been responsible for it all...oh a great website for true crime is www.crimelibrary.com

I'm just getting to this post...summer reading! I can't wait. Lately I've been reading Milan Kundera. I loved The Unbearable Lightness of Being. He's got a new book out that I got for my b-day, but haven't read it yet. I'm about halfway through Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides and it's hilarious! I've been reading The Group by Mary McCarthy (but at the gym, so it's taking me forever).

BEV: well I could go on for ages. But the best one I've read lately is Second-hand smoke by Thane Rosenbaum about being the child of suvivors. If you like that, Helen Epstein's Children of the Holocaust is aslo good. I liked Imre Kertesz's Fatelesstoo. There is another book that is so wonderful and I can't think of the title. I know you'd love it, Bev. It takes place in the Warsaw Ghetto and Maidjanek. By a woman, Helen somehing(yeah, like that helps!). When I unpack it, I'll let you know. Filip Mueller's memoirs are excellent as well, but I would warn you: if you can't handle very graphic and traumatic writing about the gas chambers and the prisoners who had to work there, don't read it. The Sonderkommando, as they were called, are a special interest of mine and so I encourage you to read about them. Lemme know what you're especially interested in, I'm sure I could rattle off some more titles.

Thanks Julie,

I'll print out your post and keep it in my purse for my next trip to the library. Some good suggestions there.

My favorite was "Lest We Forget," but I don't remember the author's name. I also like the story of a local, Noemi Ban, "Sharing is Healing."

Yes, I would appreciate any and all recommendations. I'm reading Ben Wicks, "No Time to Wave goodbye," about the children of London who were evacuated, but I'm having a hard time getting into it.

I read "Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance" twice. I just can't get enough of it. Because of that, and since I was born in 1944, I think I must have been a victim in my first life. Wouldn't it be spooky if I ended up reading my own story?

Okay, that's not funny.

Thanks, Julie, I appreciate it very much.

I should definitely check out Middlesex... I'd heard good things about it and I really liked The Virgin Suicides. The Group is another good suggestion, I remember the NY Times review of it. At first I thought you meant The Jane Austen Book Club which also just came out and I've heard really good things about. That's three more to read at least! Thanks!!

Thanks for letting me know what are the Screwtape Letters, Chinagrl:) C.S. Lewis? He sounds familiar. I haven't read the Narnia books. When I was younger, I read "Little Women," "Anne of Green Gables," and "The Babysitter Club" books. I'm sure I read others, but I can't think of them right now. I like philosophical reads. "Sophie's World" is one of them, good book, very wise & worldly. Oh I enjoy borrowing DVDs at the library:) I hope your library gets them too, and I am sure in the future all libraries will have them. In an old library I used to go to, they are opening up a new cafe in it like Barnes & Nobles. I am glad bcos I enjoy going to B & N, and they have yummy sandwiches at the Starbucks @ B and N. Have a great week at work!!

Oh, I've read Sophie's World! I really liked it. You might check out the book, The Chess Garden, it's similar in a lot of ways. No big passages about philosophers though (I skipped most of those, as I have a degree in philosophy and had read quite enough of those people. )

As for having a good work week, I wish. The temp agency has yet to find work for me.

We had a horrible awful no good honeymoon in Mexico. The first night there Eric stepped on a stick that went all the way through his foot, putting him largely off of his feet for the rest of the week. Later that week I got Montezuma's revenge (you can imagine with my IBS how enthusiastic it was). By the end of the week all we could do was lie pathetically next to the pool and read. If we had had no books.... shudder.

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold is pretty good. I LOVE the Harry Potter books! I'm a huge children's books advocate and collector, though I never liked to read when I was a kid. I'm so upset that I'm going to be out of the coutnry until June 6 and can't go see the movie on opening day!

I plan to buy and read this book. One of the residents at my job was part of Robert Bowen's division and the resident is mentioned in the book. Also, recently a small group of men who are still alive had a reunion and I got to see the pictures. If you can't tell - I'm very excited to read the book!

Fighting with the Screaming Eagles: With the 101st Airborne Division from Normandy to Bastogne by Robert Bowen

From the Publisher
Robert Bowen was drafted into Company C, 401st Glider Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, as World War II broke out, and soon after found himself storming ashore amid the chaos on Utah Beach, through unfamiliar terrain littered with minefields and hidden snipers. He was wounded during the Normandy campaign but went on to fight in Holland and the Ardennes where he was captured and his 'trip through hell' truly began. Written shortly after the war, Bowen's narrative is immediate, direct and compelling. His account, one of the few by a member of a glider regiment, is a brutal insight into the battlefields of World War II and a vivid recreation of just what life was like in an elite unit. From the horror of D-Day and fear of soldiers under fire, to the taste of C Rations and despair of captivity, this memoir tells the full story of one man's total war and is a moving tribute to all of his comrades whose 'luck ran out'.

What happened to Diane Downs' children, you ask? Well, she killed one of them. The remaining two were adopted by the prosecutor who totally fell in love with them. One of the two that he adopted ended up permanently crippled, thanks to mommy, and is in a wheelchair.

This book was so fascinating to me because I just can't fathom anyone murdering their own children; it's beyond my concept. I want to know WHY, and Ann does an excellent job analyzing the reasons.

As for the gory parts, there are really none in this book except for the incredible scene of mommy pointing the gun directly at her children at point blank range inside the car and pulling the trigger, while the children held their hands out in front of them to try to protect themselves. I see it in my mind all the time and still have a hard time understanding why God would allow those innocent little creatures to have to go through that.....

Now, "The Stranger Besides Me" is another story. There are definitely parts in there that I had to skim over completely. I can be a real weenie too! But what scares me the most of that book is how cunning and charming that guy was, because I know for a fact that if I was at a park during the day and a real handsome young man approached me with one arm in a sling and asked if I would help him unload his canoe off his old VW Bug, I'd help him too, just like all his victims did! Wouldn't YOU? Now THAT's scary!

Bev,please dont be offended, I do not beleive that God allowed those babies to suffer their sweet little lives with that wretched, horrid woman.

I know that he cried huge painful croccodile tears. Their insane mother was inhabited (sorry sp) by evil. The darkest most unbeleivable evil we could not even imagine. Make no mistake, I am not making excuses for her behavior, and I hope she burns for it. She will burn for it. Please dont think for a minute that I understand it, I struggle with it. But the God I know is a just God, he hurts when we hurt.

Anyway, I could go on and on. Just wanted to share a little, and I do not mean to sound preachy. ANd I will be praying for those kids and their new parents. I cannot fathom the fear and pain those poor babies suffered, it is wonderful that they are now in a nurturing, loving and safe home.

Of course I'm not offended. Not in the least. And you weren't preaching. (I don't think.)

I just can't imagine being one of those children -- they were so young -- and seeing your own mother point a gun at you and SHOOT! OMG!

Think about what the two surviving children have to deal with every single day of their lives: a mother who tried to murder them in cold blood, at point blank range. Can you imagine seeing that in your mind over and over again, never being able to get it out of your mind?

I don't undertand it. Please explain to me why a just God would allow that evil woman to bear children, then allow her to murder them, but not allow me to bear children?

"Hannah's Daughters" is another one I'd reccommend. It's about three generations of women, told from the granddaughter's point of view as she learns about her mother and grandmother. It really opened my eyes and helped me understand why my own mother and grandmother can simultaneously seem so familiar and yet so foreign. I read this about 3 years ago, and I still think about it all the time. Bought a copy for my mom and grandmother, too. It's a good read.

Oh honey, my heart is aching for you right now. I think you would have been such a loving and fun mom, really fun. I cant explain it to you, but I do know that everything falls under Gods plan, and HE does have one, I have experienced so many answers to such extreme circumstances, my dil is such a source of faith for me. My faith is very very strong, blind faith my friends call it.

This woman had children like so many women can get pregnant and spit them out. I look at them as vessels, dont have a good feeling about any of them who would abuse this beautiful opportunity and not seize it for what it is. I do beleive though, that she was possesed by the evil I spoke of this morning. Actually the only evil I know that could be so calculatingly cruel is Satan, it is his position that he do everything in his power to ruin and stain everything we have and hold dear to us in our lives. (hopeyou are still with me). No mother in her right mind is going to point a gun into her beautiful babies preciously sweet little faces, looking back at their 'momma' and having her release the trigger. I cant fathom their fear and pain, just cannot feel the depth of thier desperation and the visions of torment they see everyday. just cannot.

When Satan has staked his territory, like he did with this woman, he had totally taken over her brain and her body. (God is not there, Satan has to be totally rebuked and told to leave before God steps back in). Thats just the way it is. She was not herself, I promise you, please beleive me when she did this to her babes. Do realize thatI am not making excuses for her, period.

God did not leave you without child to hurt you or cause you such life long pain. There is a reason, we may not know it for a long while, but I do feel the answer will be revealed to you one day. I am promising to pray for you every day, I want your heart to feel some releif, and I want your heart to feel Gods undying love. Do know, he has shed many tears for you, he is a loving God, a caring God. He lives in my heart every moment of everyday. I am going to seek help from my Christian friends, to help find a deeper understanding for you. In a few days, I will come back and we will talk more. I wish I could take the bitterness and pain out of your heart for you!! Dont forget I am holding you up to God in prayer!! He is going to answer, he always ansers me!! always!! I could not have made it through today with out him, soon I will talk with you about my healing day. love to you honey, I hope you sleep well tonight. God Bless you!!

, Good morning Bev! Last night, I prayed for you, I will continue to do this. The children who were victims of thier evil horrible birth parent, I am praying for them also as well as the deceased child. You have brought something into my heart and I will not rest until we both have a better understanding. (at least Iam going to give it a deep hearted try, for both of us).

A lighter hearted note here, I had to sneak over to my mother and father in laws house at around 2am, to let the air out of thier tires to keep them from getting out on the road and (heaven forbid) killing someone. He had a cancerous kidney removed about 8 days ago, I found him in the grocery store the other day. He had driven there. I talked to his doc yesterday about getting some help in that department, I may as well have spit in the comode.
While at the docs visit, we had to walk to the lab which is in the in the hospital next door to the docs office. It couldnt have been 3 seconds after we passed the ER entrance,
a young woman comes running out, screaming a scream I never, ever want to hear again as long as I live. Chased by a nurse and two police officers into the parking lot, I knew her world had totally collapsed. They worked on calming her down, about 15 minutes later, I went out to move my truck, the nurse was helping her walk, I mean she was having to tell her to move her legs. This girl was totall mush, as they moved by me, gigantic, tears flowing down her poor little face (early 20's) I heard her say "we just got married". These words came out of a choked shaking voice. They entered the ER, I didnt see her again. I was almost hyterical myself, praying for her emediately, I was shaken myself. I felt a shock of pain move down through my body to my feet, imagine, if I felt that, how was she feeling? I prayed he was still alive and they were waiting for Life Flight!!!

This is when I made the decision to flatten the cars tires, I am going to do everything in my power to keep them from getting out on the road and wiping out a family, one of my kids coming home from work, my friends, thier children coming to visit with the little ones.....it goes on and on.
I dont care how many times I have to go over and do this, I am going to do it. Maybe when my husbnd and his brother get tired of airing the tires, only to find the next day they are flat again, will they remove the vehicle from the premisis!! This is what I have to do to save others, these two old people haven no bussiness driving on a good day. and Iplan to change that. Whatever it takes.

I have a doc appt. with my Colorectal Surgeon in Houston today, my mom and sis are going with me and we are going out to lunch and maybe do a little shopping. Looking forward to it, but not to the doc visit, I am afraid my recent surgery may have to be re done in a few months. grrrrr. dont' want to go through that again. Think about me please!!

Hope you have a great day, hopefully I will feel like coming back on tonight, its a long drive to moms, and a long drive into Houston and the Medical center hospitals.
Good thoughts only today, hope you are feeling better. gayla
