i HAVE HAD NAUSEA AND DIARRHEA SINCE FEB. AND MY G.I. DOC DOESN'T KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME. WE KNOW I HAVE IBS, BUT THIS CAN'T POSSIBLY BE IBS BECAUSE I GO UP TO 7 TIMES A DAY OF DIARRHEA AND AM NAUSEATED, WHICH ONLY ZOFRAN (THE MEDICATION FOR CHEMOTHERAPY PATIENTS TAKE FOR NAUSEA) WORKS AND I HAVE LOST 23 POUNDS IN THIS AMOUNT OF TIME. I AM ALREADY OVERWEIGHT SO THIS IS NOT REALLY A PROBLEM.

THE G.I. DOC HAS RUN A COLONOSCOPY, AN UPPER G.I., A SMALL INTESTINE FOLLOW THROUGH, AND TODAY I HAD A CAT SCAN OF MY ABDOMEN TO SHOW MY PANCREAS, LIVER, AND OTHER PART OF MY INTESTINES NOT ALREADY EXAMINED. THE DOC SAYS IT IS NOT C. DIFF. AND IT IS NOT COLITIS, OR CROHN'S DISEASE. I HAVE ALREADY HAD MY GALL BLADDER OUT A FEW YEARS AGO. I CAN'T EVEN SEEM TO EAT ANYTHING BUT A BLAND DIET. I AM ON QUESTRAN LITE AND VANCOMYCIN AND PRO-BIOTICS.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY OTHER IDEAS OUT THERE OF WHAT IT MIGHT BE? PLEASE HELP!!!

Fyi, going up to up 15 times a day is quite usual with bad IBS-d. That was what I was like before this diet!

Are you actually on Heather's diet? Cos loads of things in a "normal" bland diet (like milk!) are actually IBS triggers.

Has your doctor not suggested Immodium? This really helped me to stabilise - and to get on with life while I did. Sounds like you could also do with rehydration sachets and proably a protein powder to help you put some weight back on! But stabilising is the first and most imortant thing.

Hi Margie,
Your experiance sounds quite similar to the way I was introduced to IBS.... I was having diarrhea about 10x a day with crippling nausea, lost 50lbs during this time (3 months). After all the tests, was diagnosed with IBS and told to eat lots of fiber. (Thankfully I found this place)

One thing you may ask your Dr. to rule out is Celiac, which tends to cause severe diarrhea and weight loss due to malabsorbtion.
Other than that, considering the tests your Dr. has done, it looks like you get to join the rest of us in your quest for a happy belly.

I have been stable (haven't had to sleep in the bathroom) on Heather's diet for almost a year now. If I do start feeling sick, I just go back to the "what to eat, when you can't eat anything" diet for a few days and feel much better. I also feel much better about the things I am eating and promoting better health by my food choices.
PLease read Heather's web site, the information you find here can help you get stabalized and lead a reletively normal life.
Best wishes and welcome to the boards.

Colby

I have a ton of nausea... for me it's a combination of my IBS and my GERD. Between the two I can feel very very sick. I lost a bunch of weight when I first got ill as well. Have you tried any of the antidepressant medicines? When I was suffering from horrible nausea last year I got put on a low dose of Elavil and it made me stop feeling sick. It will also make you gain weight... big sugar cravings.

Welcome to the Boards, Margie.

Whoa, a lot of yelling there! (Next time you post, would you mind turning off the caps lock key please? The yelling is really loud.....)

When you say you're on a "bland diet," what exactly do you mean? It doesn't sound like you're on the IBS program, am I correct? You need to get Heather's book "The First Year" If you follow the diet and you're very strict about it, and don't cheat at all, you should get better very soon. I cheated -- I kept drinking my beloved coffee -- and I never got better until I finally stopped. The cramping, diarrhea and nausea were unbearable, and it was every day! But when I stopped the coffee and got real about my problem, I got better instantly.

Are you taking a soluble fiber supplement? I too am a D, like you, and was initially afraid of taking more fiber (after all, I was getting enough already, right!) -- wrong! That's not how it works. Now I'm a lot better, thanks also to the Acacia. Check the link to your left, "IBS Supplements."

Congrats on losing the weight! I wish I could lose even half that. Up to now, my entire focus has been on getting myself stable, and worrying about the weight later. Well, now I'm stable -- thank God! -- so now my focus is on the weight. I'm down 3 pounds -- not much, but it's a start.

Nausea and diarrhea are symptoms of IBS. I have both symptoms (and cramps) when I have an attack. Luckily, with the program and the tremendous help from these Boards, I've gotten stable, and my attacks are now few and far between. You can do the same if you follow the program and ask lots of questions in these boards.

By the way, you'll get more response if you post your IBS questions in the IBS Diet Board; this Board (The Living Room) is for non-IBS stuff, just fun chit-chat and games. You'll have to play the "What Is It?" Game here with everyone; it's a lot of fun.

Margie, keep the faith. You're in good hands here. We've all been there and know what you're going through. And we've heard it all, so don't be shy about asking anything at all that bothers you.

Again, welcome!

Bev

Have you been checked for gynecological problems? Why on earth are you on vancomycin if you don't have c. difficile? What did the doctor say about the possibility of GERD?

Hi,

I also have nausea as part of IBS. Mine is usually brought on by stress, though. After I had a panic attack and severe nausea for several days, my doctor put me on Phenergan (it will make you sleepy) and it helped some. Usually I just take pepto bismol...yucky...but it does seem to help a little. I take Imodium for diarrea and that works pretty good, too. It really feels great when the nausea goes away. I think I hate that worse than the D.
