My poor dog ended up tearing the cruciate ligament in his knee this weekend, and now he needs surgery! He looks so depressed, as he is such an active dog and will not be able to be as active as he was before!

Only thing, there is not a permanent vet in this area, and the only one who does this surgery won't be here for another 3 weeks or so, so he has to wait that long . I am checking on a vet in another town to see if they can do it, may have to drive him there, I don't want him to wait that long for a surgery! Poor Boss!

Oh no! That sucks. My family's dog hates being injured too -they just don't get why they can't run around do they! Is he bandaged up and picking at it?

Good luck with the vet!

Thanks...nope he's not bandaged, but just not walking on that leg...he is gone in for an x-ray this morning (just incase he has chipped bones)....I just got off the phone with the vet in the next town and scheduled a surger for another 2 weeks, better than waiting 3 I guess...so that is a bit of a relief!!

Wow. It sucks for both of you all that you have to wait for the surgery... I hope he's not in too much pain. Is he going to have to wear a cone when it gets done? My dog had to wear a cone for a week or two. It was hilarious. She didn't think it was, but it was great fun for us.

I hope he feels better soon.

Aw! Poor doggie. Our dog Max tore his ACL this January. He's a big, active Lab (120 lbs) and it just killed my DF to see his baby nurse his poor leg and limp around.

Max is still under Vet's orders to not do any running around, though he acts like his knee is fine. The surgery also cost $1200 so be prepared for that. And, the vet said that 50 percent of large dogs that tear their ACL tear the other one within the year (I think it was a year). So, we're also checking into doggie insurance.

Hope your pup feels better and gets help soon! It's heartbreaking to watch them try and get around.

Keep up updates!

that stinks. i'm sorry that Boss is ouchy and hurt and that he's going to need surgery. give him a gigantic bone with a bow on it and let him know it's from me!

i worked at an animal hospital for 8 years. let me tell you: the surgery is no biggie (except for the cost! ). any time a dog has anesthesia, there's a risk of problems, but aside from that the surgery isn't too terrible for the dog. it's long, though, usually. i'm sure your vet will do a great job!

is Boss overweight? a lot of times that contributes to the torn cruciates... if he is, see if you can concince him to eat some green beans or other healthy veggie mixed in with his dinner--- that will help fill his tummy and keep his head thinking he's eating tons, but it will help him take in less calories. and do watch him carefully, whomever it was that said they can tear the other ACL, too, was right. especially since they'll be carrying more weight on the "good" leg for a while.

have you noticed? dogs don't seem to mind being 3-legged. isn't that admirable!? i'm sure they're painful and ouchy, but it's so lovely how they adapt so quickly and readily to changes in their physical situations. they run almost as fast on 3 legs and never look back! dogs are the best kinds of people there are!

Aww, your poor pups! I will keep my fingers crossed that you can find another vet in alot sooner than 3 weeks.

Yep, boss runs quite well on three legs, he did at least the day it happened. Now, however, he just looks depressed/sad, like he knows he can't get around very good. He don't even ask to go out doors, he's just not excited anymore....I feel so terrible for him.

He is not overweight, he actually should not get any thinner than he is, he just loves to jump (to catch frisbee) and get's himself in weird positions when fetching, so I guess he twisted/landed the wrong way. Now I will have to watch what he eats though, cause sitting around all day will definetly put the pounds on him....

I will give him a bone
