Ok Bev,

Won't add the erly to your name if you don't add the ricia to mine. I only let my husband call me Patricia. I'm still Patty to my relatives. I guess they still think I'm a kid. Probably because I still seem like one. Collect dolls and bears among other things. I found the library ok but don't know how to just go in without butting into someone else's subject in order to talk with you. I will ask my husband about the problem with the furniture. I couldn't afford the furniture he does at work. Some pieces are $10,000 and up. He did some furniture over for our governor but of course he didn't go to the shop. Almost all the people that have furniture done there go through a decorator. He also did my sister's dining room set over that she bought second hand and it came out beautiful. He had to do some of it out in her yard and the rest he did while she was on vacation so she wouldn't have to smell the chemicals. I know even though he uses varnish he also uses polyurethane. Besides the stain I know he also uses a glaze but will have to ask him for sure about your problem.
As far as the insurance I would take it out if we could afford it but I have had so many surgeries I am still paying for them. I have a tumor on my right lung and am supposed to go every 3 months to have it checked because I won't have surgery but I haven't had it checked out in over a year. It's too hard to pay the medical bills I have now plus insurance payments with me not working.
If you ever want to just email me it's patricia181@comcast.net
Have a good day!
Pat

Well, Bevrs, to tell you the truth, I don't really need an excuse either. I don't know what happened this weekend, but I really enjoyed myself! It's out of my system now, and I'm back on track. I paid the price, but personally, it was worth it. (sometimes being bad is just too much fun!)

The same exact thing happened to me this weekend. I have IBS-C and I will be very good for a while and then go on a eating binge. I have always been skinny and have put on 20 lbs with this IBS. So I am also scared of gaining more weight. I also take zelnorm and it works wonders for the pain. It aslo helps me go but I have to take stool softeners with it and used to have to take milk of mag. with it. I have been on it since December and the dr. thinks I will be on it another two years before I become normal. I guess it is a long, long process! Good luck!

Hi Bev,
My husband told me to ask you if you let the stain dry for 24 hours before you varnished the furniture. He wants to know if you strip the furniture first. Then wipe it down with laquer thinner, then wash it down with Simple Green and steel wool. Wipe it down, then let it dry for 24 hours. When you stain it let it dry for 24 hours before applying (ORANGE SHELLAC) thinning the shellac down with denatured alcohol. Also used this alcohol to clean your brushes. Next step sand it down a little and wipe it off then you can varnish it. He said to give it 4 light coats of varnish letting each dry first before putting another. If you want to give it a coat or two of polyurethane give it light coats then sand. The last coat you don't sand. You can skip the polyurethane if you only want to. It takes longer to dry. He said if you only want to use the varnish that's fine too. He wanted to know what type of piece of furniture you were working on. Hope this helps!

Wow, you can sure tell the difference between someone who does it for fun and someone who's a PRO! YOWZA!

We're working on some old doors right now -- but the piece that frustrated us the most was the old antique vanity/dresser we bought at a junk shop downtown. It was a total mess -- had been in storage since the '50's, couldn't even see yourself in the mirror, and the drawers were all full of disgusting yucky sticky fuzzy stuff -- don't ask! Anyway, I'm pretty sure the wood is walnut. When we took off the mirror from the frame, the back was stamped, "Vancouver, B.C., Jan. 18, 1947."

The problem came in when we tried to varnish over the stain; we let it dry a good 24 hours, and it was inside, so no dampness -- still, it turned white! We had to remove the new varnish, sand, and used a sanding sealer, then the varnish, and it came out fine.

We're having the same problem with these doors! ARGGGHHH! We're letting them dry a WEEK between the stain and varnish, but still the same darn problem! I'm going to follow your instructions here and see if that doesn't do it -- something tells me it will.

Thanks a lot! Your hubby's cool.

Bev

Hi Bev,

I just told my husband about the doors and he said to do them the same way I explained to you about the vanity. He said to tell you the most important thing is to make sure they are really washed down good after they are stripped and sanded. Also if you need to shine any of the hardware (if they're brass) on the vanity and doors use dry FINE steel wool.

Let me know how you make out. If you run into a problem email me as I left my email address with you on the other email and since I'm home so much can probably get help to you pretty quickly. My husband opens the shop and leaves for work at 3:45 AM. Yes that's right AM. He's usually home between 2:30 and 3:00 PM. He and one of his bosses work early to avoid the rush hour traffic as the shop is in Boston. The Canadians make good furniture. The French and Italians are the ones who did most of the buildings in the United States and Canada. Since my husband is half Italian and half French Canadian he must have it in his blood. he's been doing it since he was 16. Of course he went to school to learn it but worked after school doing the same thing. Well hope this info. helps you. I know you've helped me a lot with the IBS and just talking to me about having the same family problem. Seems like we have a lot in common. What will we find out we have in common next?
Take Care,
Pat

Wow, Pat, WOW! Your hubby REALLLY knows his stuff! $10,000 and UP? Holy Toledo! I'm blown.

Well, just to add to the things we have in common -- I collect teddy bears. I had quite a collection up at our float home in Canada, but when we sold it, the buyers wanted everything -- EVERYTHING! -- including my beloved bears. I compromised and left them half. Rats.

I sure don't like the sound of that tumor going unchecked for a year. The medical program in this country absolutely SUCKS! (Sorry.)

Yeah, this DID turn out to be a good weekend -- we found each other! Here's my e-mail address: RowHard@comcast.net Even our addresses are similar!

Girlfriend, you're not gonna believe this -- my hubby's mom was French Canadian.

Thanks for the info; I'm gonna pass it on to hubby. I don't know if we'll do much more furniture refinishing, though, because we've got so much now, and with the new house I don't really need any more. But when the house is finished and we move in, we'll get back to my real love -- stained glass.

By the way, you're in Boston? Anywhere near the Charles River? I row on the Charles every day. Well, by videotape, of course. It's a rowing tape I use when I jump on the rowing machine and try to keep up with the other rowers. Every rower wants to brag, "I Rowed The Charles!"

French Canadian, eh? Hubby's family was from Sault St. Marie. He was born and raised in Detroit. I was born in D.C. and raised in Arlington and in Maine (my mother lived in Arlington, my father in Maine).

Yeah, we'll have to start e-mailing.

Bev

Ok Girlfriend!
I just noticed that you joined this website on my husband's birthday, November 4th. You joined on 11/4/03.

Did you live in Arlington, MA? Wha part of Maine did you come from. I want to do a day trip to Kennebunkport in June when the bus goes up there. Used to go on trips a lot but don't want to stay overnight anymore. Rather be at home at night with my own comforts.
I never tried doing stained glass but used to go to ceramic classes. I made a lot of nice things for my daughter when she was married and the same for my younger sister when she got married. Even my husband went. They loved his work so much that he worked there while I painted the ceramics. He was great at doing it, especially dry brushing and when he worked on hummel figurines they said you couldn't tell them from the real thing. It was nice because his working there on the nights we went paid for our classes and supplies.

It's nice you can do you home over the way you want to. We live in an apartmen building, it's nice but nothing like having your own home. In two years we're going into elderly housing as the rent will be much cheaper. My husband's bosses want to give up the business in two years so we might take early retirement at 62. If someone hires him then he would keep working. There aren't too many people that do finishing/refinishing anymore so age wouldn't matter on that type of job.
You can email me anytime you want.
Your IBS Friend,
Pat
